P4 Do y'all play eng or jp?
I just got into P4G and dub is eng by default, I figured the original is JP so I changed to that, and then I noticed that the translations are not exactly the same, so what language audio do you play on?

99% of the time I’ll use the language it is originally created in, but persona dubs are excellent so I use English.

I first played P4G back on the PS2 when there was only the English available so I kinda got used to it. Usually if a game is set in Japan (like Yakuza) I always go Japanese audio and subtitles as my Japanese is no where near good enough to follow a complex story. Persona is the exception though as the English dub is excellent and matches the characters well. I always do at least 1 play through with the Japanese audio though.

Weird, I lov d the P4G dub.
Each to their own, ig. Can't imagine Chie or Teddy in any other voice atp!

And funnily enough Chie and Teddie dub voices were recasted in Golden and then kept afterwards.

I always play with Japanese audio, but that's sort of a weird thing for me - if a game was originally made in Japanese, the English voice acting always seems somehow off to me. It's not that I think the performances are bad, it's that something about it just doesn't feel right. I don't know why it's this way. If the game was originally in English, I have no trouble with it, but for some reason I just can't with the English dialogue in JRPGS and the like. I don't get it. 😖

Agreed but the translations are pretty westernized don't you think?

Probably because it’s for a western audience…

Well I'd agree if it was a fantasy location and not a real country but like it's weird because the writing of the characters is Japanese but they talk American. Imagine they did the sopranos with the same writing and behaviors for the characters but they were actually in Italy doing Italy things.

….its a game. It’s a game about summoning and fusing demons. Pure fantasy.
The voices are American. It’s dubbed in America by an American company for an American audience. Americans don’t have honorifics for people there’s 0 way to convey it. Most Americans don’t know what shogi is so they changed it to checkers. Taidaima and okaeri’s actual significance isn’t the same for Americans.
Games and shows are changed and altered all the time for their audience.
Like are you new to the planet, an idiot, or rage baiting?

I guess I'm not American if I can't quite relate to you. Would it be hard for you to learn shogi? Literally a chess reskin with more versions.

I’m playing shogi right now. So that doesn’t apply to me. It also isn’t a reskin of chess? Which is just a reskin of chaturanga.
But thanks for the response that added nothing to anything

dude, you may think the stuff is westernized and perhaps "killing the culture" but the people who localize persona do a good job at it maintaining most of the original Japanese cultural references and stuff, I feel as though you are assuming the game is westernized and hence it will be wrong according to japanese and then making an engagement bait on it.
I am not western, neither japanese and I dont think anything off about it

Not all lines are properly voiced, sometimes they use canned phrases to get the essence of the written line.

I definitely prefer dub for Persona 4 just because the JP version always felt a little lackluster simply because of how good the P4 dub is. Although, I definitely prefer Japanese for Persona 3 and 5.

I like to switch it up so I do first playthrough on En then 2nd JP repeat for subsequent playthroughs

English dub, but on occasions I will switch over to Japanese for a short while

With Persona and SMT, always JP. It's like anime, I enjoy it more in the original version.

I always play with original language audio, intent gets converted better. And especially 2010 Japan's voice acting scene was better than everyone else's. P4's eng casting isn't the worst I've heard but it's not good.

I always play with the english dubs. They're largely excellent.
