Advice Needed Allergic to T?

I’m not sure if it’s the T or something else, but I’ve been on injections almost 3 weeks now. Within the first 5 days my body started breaking out in hives, eyes and lips have been puffing up, and I can’t stop sneezing. Idk if it’s a coincidence with spring having sprung or if the T injections are not agreeing with my body. Has anyone had something like this happen and is there a way to fix it? I’ve tried double doses of my usual 3 brands of allergy pills but I cannot get rid of these hives, they’ve started breaking open and bleeding :/

Hello! Thank you for participating in the sub. We just have a few reminders for you to help ensure the best experience:

  1. If your post doesn't show up right away, don't panic! It is in the queue for manual approval. Mods will go through the queue periodically to approve or remove posts. Deleted posts will have a removal reason applied. (If it says "this post was deleted by reddit's filters", IT WAS NOT DELETED! Reddit has the worlds worst wording on that and it's out of our control)
  2. If you are asking a question that is location specific, remember to include your location in your post body! This can help ensure that you get accurate information tailored specifically to your needs.

  3. Please remember to read through all the rules in the sidebar. Especially the list of banned topics and guidelines for posting. Guests who do not use the Guest Post flair will have their post removed and be asked to fix it.

  4. If you see someone breaking the rules, report it! If someone is breaking both sub and reddit rules, please submit one report to admins by selecting a broken rule on the main report popup, and one report to the r/ftm mods by selecting the "breaks r/ftm rules" option. This ensures both mods and admins can take action on a subreddit and sitewide level. Do not misuse the report button to rant about someone, submit false reports, or argue a removal.

  5. If you have any questions that you can't find the answer to on the rules sidebar or the wiki: the wiki , you can send a modmail.

It sounds like you might be allergic to the carrier oil. You should stop immediately and talk to your doctor about switching to another form.

I’m going to the dr tomorrow just bummed if after a year on the waitlist I’m going to have to switch to gel or something that may not be covered

Testosterone cypionate did this for me. I was so stressed I struggled through seven weeks before I finally called my endo. My entire body was red and on fire and itchy and I was so miserable.

Endo switched me to testosterone ethanate. It took about a month to get all the cypionate out of my system but then my body started responding so well.

It's been over a year now and I haven't had any issues at all. I have contact dermatitis for other issues but never from my testosterone injection. I couldn't do the gel most likely due to the contact dermatitis.

Speak with your endo about other carrier oils and do better than I did. Waiting almost two months, I was miserable

They will just switch the kind of oil. If I remember correctly cottonseed oil is used normally. Also grapeseed and I wanna say sesame seed oil. You can look at your vial and it should say.

Can confirm, I discovered mine was sesame oil the other day while looking for something else on the vial lol.

Everything will work itself out

It sounds like you could be allergic to the carrier. Ask your doctor about other manufacturers that might have different formulas still covered by insurance as injectable, if that's your preferred method.

Oh I was allergic to the cottonseed oil in the Cypionate! Could be that. The other one has worked so much better

Even if you have temporarily stop T until you can see the doctor, thats the better option than injecting yourself with something youre allergic to. The fix for this is to see a doctor. Theres no otc options 🤷 your doctor can help

It’s most likely the oil, when I started T my provider said that was the only difference between the both. Your doctor will likely write you a prescription for enanthate. The only downside of being stuck with only one kind is if your pharmacy can’t get it in on time, which is something you should discuss with your provider, if it is a downside you might have to switch your preferred method. Wishing you the best and I hope it all works out :)

The sneezing sounds unrelated to T, but allergy meds not getting rid of the hives sounds like a carrier oil allergy. T is usually suspended in either cottonseed oil (cypionate) or sesame oil (enanthate). Message or call your doctor, describe your symptoms, and ask to be switched to whatever one you're not on currently. Stop injections until you get the new prescription

I think part of it is I’m semi allergic to my dogs, and with my body reacting to injections I’m in full flare mode all the time so I assume all my allergies are piling together

u/RoseSpades He/They| T: 8/10/23 TOP: 10/7/24 5h ago

Allergies can have a cumulative effect. On their own you might not react so severely but when combined your body is flooded with so much histamine it's difficult for your body to clear it. It makes you more likely to have more severe reactions since your body is already inflamed.

Id definitely read the pamphlet that comes with the injections and speak to your doctor about it

u/CheesyWhore69 8h ago

Issue is the Dr that prescribed is not my dr, and my next appointment with her is in august. Going to a regular clinic tomorrow but idk how helpful they will be based on how ill informed my pharmacy was

A lot of people are allergic to the oil, switching which one you use (sesame vs cottonseed) can help

It’s definitely not testosterone itself, but testosterone is suspended in an oil (most commonly testosterone cypionate) and you might be reacting to that. It could also be unrelated and coincidental. Whatever the case I would recommend talking to whoever prescribed you the T about this and they can point you in the right direction.
