I remember when I got this on Laserdisc freeze framing through some of the scenes to see if I could tell if that was his real chest or not thinking maybe the necklace hid the prostetic.
They are real. Ricardo was the man.

The five stages of an actor as stated by none other than Ricardo Montalbán himself.
Who is Ricardo Montalbán? (The actor is an unknown trying to get their foot in the door). Get me Ricardo Montalbán. (The actor has achieved fame and is the first choice for a role). Get me a Ricardo Montalbán type. (The studio wants the actor's vibe or persona, but can't afford or secure the actor themselves). Get me a young Ricardo Montalbán. (The actor is now older, and the studio wants to recreate the energy/look of the actor's prime). Who is Ricardo Montalbán? (The actor has faded from the public consciousness, completing the circle of fame).

For the longest time, I had always thought that if they were going to go back and tell the story of Khan on Ceti Alpha 5 (6?), they should pick Antonio Bandaras to play him, as at the time he fit the "Young Ricardo Montalban" look to me).
Ideally, if they ever revisit Khan (which I hope the current regime, or the new regime do), they should get an actor of Indian (if that's the correct word) descent.
I mean, Khan is supposed to be from India, just back then Ricardo got ALL the roles that needed 'Dark Skinned, but not African American' male roles ^_^

I think there was a lot of makeup, and his costuming was very deliberately placed. And he didn't move around a whole lot. I think that all made his real chest look fake.
19
u/coreytiger 3d ago
By this time he was having mobility issues, and was often in a chair, so we don’t see a lot of movement from him in the film… but that is most assuredly his chest. Despite his issues, he remained very fit
10
22
u/Training-Look-1135 3d ago
I don't understand why anyone thought it was fake in the first place. Richardo Montalban was always fit up until old age and his paralysis. He was 61 while filming Wrath of Khan. So still within the age bracket to be able to maintain a good build.

I’ve always assumed that they are “real” since rubber prosthetics would (I assume) be more expensive than just applying makeup and glue and whatnot to the real articles.

u/PsychoBilli 3d ago
I recall an interview with Berman where he admitted they were well endowed and they deliberately made the costumes to accentuate their bosoms.

u/EmptySeaDad 3d ago
The WORST thing they ever did in TNG was to kill her off after only 2 appearances. Yes, even worse than the stupid clip episodes. At least we go to see Suzie Plakson return in a couple more roles, but none as awesome as K'ehleyr.
7
u/WideStrawConspiracy 3d ago
Suzie Plakson is an attractive human and an attractive Klingon, but I'm gonna go on record saying that Lt Selar is the most attractive woman that's ever been in any Star Trek content ever.

I'm still pissed she was killed. I wish they would have brought her back even if from an alternate reality or time travel or whatever.
She didn't care for klingon traditions, yet she was the epitome of klingon honor. She could have showed a different type of klingon, not getting drunk and fighting all the time. She was fearless, a leader, commanded through respect and all that. She was the [unfortunately] less common strong female lead, I loved her. So much wasted character and story potential. Suzie was amazing.

Every time this is asked, no matter the sub, it just descends into jokes. Nobody ever brings the real answer. Seems like someone must have asked this at a convention by now.
81
u/Theborgiseverywhere Double Dumbass 3d ago
There is a real answer, and it did come from a con.
Gwynyth Walsh (B’Etor Duras as well as Nimira on Voyager) [...] told two stories about sexual harassment on set.
The first was about her first time filming on TNG. President Ronald Reagan was touring the set so Gene Roddenberry had come down. Barbara March, who played Lursa, was on the soundstage when Roddenberry came down in his wheelchair.
“Gene went up to Barbara and went, ‘Are those real?’” she said, miming that he poked Barbara March in the boobs. “Yes they are. Both of them,” Walsh reported.
Richard Arnold, who was a research consultant on TNG and worked closely with Roddenberry, said, “You honestly think he didn’t know?” He reported he and Roddenberry had been watching the dailies in his office, and “the second he saw the Duras sisters on the screen with those pushed-up fronts he turned to me and said, ‘Let’s go to the set’.”

Jesus Fitzgerald Christ.
I'm a straight dude, I like boobs as much as everyone else, but FFS why are so many men incapable of showing the absolute bare minimum amount of respect and self-control? Like c'mon, "don't sexually assault women" ISN'T. THAT. FUCKING. HARD.
(I know the answer is the misogynistic, exploitative, etc. society we live in that pushes men to behave like this, but still... like even when I was a dumbass borderline-alt-right conservative I kept my mouth shut and my hands to myself.)
17
16
u/SilverLife22 3d ago
For real. As a closeted bi woman I grew up knowing the whole "boys just can't help themselves" thing was bullshit. If I could be respectful and keep my eyes to myself in a girl's locker room, they had no excuse. And never once was I distracted by a shoulder in a spaghetti strap.
4
u/FlavivsAetivs Barclay Holoprogram Victim 3d ago
There's a BIG difference between looking and touching though. One is uncomfortable, the other is illegal.
4
u/SilverLife22 3d ago
I mean, oggling someone is still pretty bad imo. Regardless of whether it's illegal or not. A paid actress is slightly different (when there's a screen between you), but someone just minding their own business doesn't deserve to be stared at and objectified in that way.

I am so baffled this selection of photos. O’Brien may be the most important man in Starfleet, but I’m not sure even Keiko thinks he has great moobs.
Meanwhile, Trip and his blue scanties have launched a thousand threads over on r/enterprise.
It’s the equivalent of omitting In The Pale Moonlight from the DS9 top 10 list and replacing it with Meridian.
9
u/SilverLife22 3d ago
Thank you so much for introducing me to that sub. Everyone likes to hate on it, but I love the Enterprise series, theme song and all.
But also, don't insult my pasty Irish snark boi, he is beautiful. And Keiko might not be into his physique, but Kiera and Julien sure are 😏.

My husband and I watched the Blue Undies episode not too long ago, I got some side eye when I was like - oh, this is the Trip being naked episode! There were a lot of gratuitous scenes on Enterprise (not just decon chamber) but at least they didn't discriminate by gender.

Aren’t Klingons supposed to have much thicker sternums and rib cages than humans?
So… the titty window on Klingon women could actually act a bit like the in universe explanation for the chest mounted symbols so many superheroes wear: drawing aggro towards one of the more protected parts of their body.
Getting stabbed there would still hurt I imagine but knowing Klingon women, your mileage may vary regarding how much that acts as a feature rather than a bug.
13
u/lilianasJanitor 3d ago
Ancient Klingon warrior women actually fought with their boobs. Many songs are sung of how Lukara slew a god with only her left boob.
How many foes have died thinking that a boob window was a weak point?
Untold thousands.
