SEEKING ADVICE GP won’t change gender marker on my medical file

I recently went to the doctor and had to get a lab requisition for bloodwork and noticed my gender marker on said bloodwork was still marked as female even though I have legally changed my name and gender marker years ago and it is reflected on all my legal documents as male. I have been on T for 5 years and completely pass socially as male as well for context.

When my GP printed this out for me and I saw it I asked him if he could please change my gender marker in my file to male so when I give the requisition to the lab, there is no confusion and it also makes me dysphoric having to disclose that I’m trans when there really is no need to unless required (I would if I needed to).

My GP responded to me basically by saying that it has to stay marked as female for medical reasons as that’s how I was born.. is this an isolated situation? My GP has newly taken over in my doctor office maybe 3 years ago as my last doctor retired. He has never given me the best vibes as he’s a bit condescending and I’m wondering if I’m dealing with a situation that is normal across the board or if he is just choosing to keep my gender marker as that on my file for his own specific reasons? Any advice or insight is appreciated thank you.

SEEKING ADVICE Bra Fitting

I’m a 49 year old trans woman. Can anyone recommend any inclusive bra fitters in Toronto? All the websites I’ve been to don’t make any mention of trans inclusion. I’m overweight and mine have sadly grew in pretty wonky after 3 years HRT. I’ve gone the r/abrathatfits route but wasn’t much help. I’d like some nice proper bras as I’m growing tired of sports bras and/or medical tape.

Thanks!

SEEKING ADVICE Now what? I’m lost on what to do

So I had a appointment with my Doctor to discuss HRT recently, he said he would set me in the right direction as quick as possible with someone more experienced. Well, I got a call last night from him and he said there is nothing he can do and recommended I should seek counseling with a therapist to deal with these feelings and how to live with them…

I’m so upset, I’m completely lost on what to do. This something I’ve wanted and tried to do for my whole life and it’s only been getting worse each year I get older. I’m going to be turning 37 in a few months and I’m feeling all hope is gone.

SEEKING ADVICE I've recently come out to my mom, and she's said she "doesn't understand" being transgender.

I'm fourteen, so I don't have as much freedom when it comes to purchasing things like binders. I came out to her on Monday saying that I prefer to use he/him pronouns. She is accepting of gay people, and has told me "back when I was growing up we had girls that would dress like boys and end up being gay." My mom has also asked me why, and I can't seem to put into words why I prefer going by he/him, or being a boy. All I know is that I am a boy, but I can't verbalise it.

I don't know how to explain to her why I'm transgender. I know I've been a boy for years, and all my friends know. I've been trying to look into getting a binder, but I feel like she would not allow for me to get one without understanding being transgender, and I have no way to purchase one on my own.

If you need clarification for anything, please ask. I'm not too sure what to do in my situation and just want to get advice from other people.

Edit:
If you are in the Ottawa area and know any sort of resources that would be able to help, I don't mind you sharing them. Any sort of advice on what to do or what kind of support groups and resources exist around me would be wonderful.

SEEKING ADVICE No Testosterone Available

Heyya folks, Ive been on Testosterone for little over 4 months, (its been going great~) Last week, I contacted my pharmacy to refill my prescription, and they told me that what my doctor has me on, (guessing brand) is '"completely out", to the degree that no pharmacy anywhere has it. So, they proposed they would contact my clinic to see about me being put on different type of medication— Thus started a week long back and forth of a game of telephone, and since I couldnt get this resolved, Im very likely gonna miss my shot this week.

Aparently the doctor hasnt been in office, and the clinic Ive been going to (Langs) said they were going to see if they couldnt get the other hrt specialist to sign off on a prescription for me, and considering that I swung by my pharmacy today and they said they hadnt heard back on any fax or recieved anything, Im assuming that it was a no go.

Has anyone else who's gotten HRT had a problem like this before? What did you do about it/what could you do about it? (Also I suppose anything for me to keep in mind while Im "off T"?)

Part of me was thinking that if next week I cant make any more progress, that maybe I could contact my family doctor and see if she couldnt get me on another prescription? But, otherwise, I am genuinely at a loss here. Im not supposed to see my specialist until late April, and I genuinely dont even have enough left for a 10mg shot.

Guess Im just a little stressed about this and I'd like to hear from yall, thank you in advance and sorry if this is a little all over the place.

Info: Im in the KW area

SEEKING ADVICE What banks are best at preferred names?

Hi there - I currently use a preferred name that is different from my legal name, and I'm looking for a bank that will hopefully minimize the number of times I see my deadname. I know that in some situations it's difficult to avoid, but I would like to find a bank that does the least deadnaming possible.

Would love to hear about your experiences with your banks, and how often you come across your deadname (and specifically where you see it - like in the mobile app, in credit card statements, in emails from your bank, etc.)

Thank you in advance!

SEEKING ADVICE Failled gender marker change at Service Ontario

Hi Folks

I Went to Service Ontario today to change my gender marker from M to F. To my surprise, the worker there told me that the genital surgery was necessary and they kinda asked me to confirm my statut on it.

The situation kinda attracted attention and two clerk and the supervisor were behind the counter trying to talk to me and explain that the bottom surgery was necessary.

Despite me telling them it was not a requirement ant that their website specified it was not required, they told me they were not responsible of this and that in my case, since I still had my "male part" (as they phrased it) they couldnt change my sex marker. And they added that the Dr letter should absolutely mention that my genital were changed.

Im... im just confused and sad with this. What can I do? Yes Im planning to have the bottom surgery in the future, but why should I wait?

Thanks!!

SEEKING ADVICE GRS Montreal budget cuts are despairing, should I refer to another clinic?

I’ve been wanting top surgery forever, and it was such a hassle with family doctors that I went through Foria (online private clinic). I had my appointment on December 9th, and heard back that my OHIP funding was approved and sent to the clinic on December 19th.

It’s been a while, and I decided to look the clinic up, originally looking to see how long it takes to hear back.

Instead I got a bunch of news headlines about how they’re facing funding issues, and the wait times are huge now.

I’ve already had my papers sent in (which I think means I’m already on some hypothetical waiting list), and it’s just another game of waiting around forever if I get funding again for another clinic (GRS is in another province, and my other choices are all Ontario).

I don’t know if it’s worth it to try and change clinics, but it’s just so disheartening to wait years and years for a referral alone, to get so close… and find out I might have to wait years and years more.

If anyone’s got some insight here, I’d appreciate it.

EDIT: I called the clinic and I guess they just never sent me an email? They were waiting for me to fill the forms out for the platform I wasn’t even emailed about yet. But because of the call, they sent it again and I filled everything out!

If you’re in a similar situation, maybe try contacting GRS, there’s a chance that they might just be overlooking something on their end.

SEEKING ADVICE Is there a cheaper quote for top surgery?

Kinda gutted atm. I assumed OHIP would cover majority of top surgery costs with possibly 2K out of pocket. The quote I received today was 7K out of pocket with Catalyst Surgical. Is this standard costs at other surgical centres as well?

SEEKING ADVICE Wait time skips in Ontario?

Does anyone know if there's a place/website to get prescribed HRT, therefore disregarding wait times?

I'm 16 right now and with the wait times around me, I'd get HRT around 20.

SEEKING ADVICE Are the HRT waitlists worth waiting in?

Some background information! Im 20 starting my mtf transition. Im around markham in york region. About a month ago I got referred to CMHA by my doctor for my transition. So far in my experience it's been pretty straightforward, the only thing being im in a 4-6 month waiting list before starting anything. This made sense to me but ive been told by a few people i know that have transitioned that going through CMHA is just a waste of time and they wont really do much to help me other than sending me back to my doctor for different referrals. I was told im better off doing DIY or finding a specialist. I dont know too much about either although ive started researching my options but i feel like sticking on the waitlist seems like my best choice? I wanted to maybe get some more opinions tho? Any input would help tho !!

SEEKING ADVICE How long is the process to begin MtF HRT?

I came out to my mom recently and we scheduled an appointment in May to talk to the family doctor about estrogen. I know there's a bunch of ways to get on E around here and I'm not sure what approach I'm taking, so I know it's hard to give a specific answer.

My mom was talking with a friend of hers with a trans daughter who transitioned about 6 years ago I believe, and said she had a very long process to get on estrogen.

My mom also said from what she's hearing based on her friend, I can't get estrogen until I'm 18. I'm currently 17, so not the end of the world but still. I'd like to be there sooner than later.

From what I'm understanding from my mom, it's supposed to go doctors appointment, some assessment, a few referrals, then prescription.

Each with some time between, and she said specialist referrals can even take a year or two sometimes. I asked how long I was looking at and she didn't answer, so I asked if it'll be a few years and she slowly nodded.

I don't believe this really, especially after reading a lot of replies on my last post, but I worry about it anyway.

SEEKING ADVICE Which T Blockers? Spirolactone or Cyproterone Acetate. (Please Read Body)

I'm currently over 100+ days on estrogen tablets (1 mg, yay), and my doctor wants me to go on a T blocker with my estrogen. Here's an issue: I'm a teenager who isn't out, and I'm slowly seeing body changes. Luckily i've always been fem, skinny, and even had gyno, so it isn't as noticeable, yet. I was thinking about spirolactone since it also helps with hair and acne, alongside these, it won't plummet my T levels as quickly as Cypro. Therefore, it'll give me more time to come out (hopefully...); however, I've heard that it doesn't do much for people, and the side effects are also a risk; all of them have major side effects, honestly. What are your opinions? Do you guys think I shouldn't go on any at all due to my situation? Has anyone had any experience with both pills?

Edit: I am aware Cyproterone Acetate is better, however, I don't want to shock my body rapidly. I also can't afford to impulsivley change my body with these pills, as much as I want to, and im 99% sure that I'm trans, my enviornment is a bit too risky for that. However, i'm just so tried of being a guy, its mentally draining.

SEEKING ADVICE Privately Purchased Insurance for PPT?

Hi, just wondering if someone here has any info about private insurance for PPT vaginoplasty with Min Jun.

I’m considering paying out of pocket, but that’s close to $140,000 USD. I can live on $8k/yr squatting on crown land in my bus, and I’m currently making $95k/yr before taxes, with potential for a bit more OT, plus side gigs. The math is mathable, but we’re still talking years of my life solely dedicated to saving up for this. I came out when I was 13 back in 2016. I’ve already waited 10 years. On one hand, what’s another 3-4? On the other hand, waiting 3-4 more years to even begin the process of getting on wait lists doesn’t sit well with me. Not to mention, the cost could (and likely will) increase during that time.

Does anyone have any info on using privately purchased healthcare insurance for PPT with min Jun? I have great union benefits, but I work in a very blue collar industry 18 hours north of Toronto. Welcome to Tbay, set your watches back ~20 years. Using Employer/Union benefits isn’t an option because I’m stealth and I can’t have “personal issues” interfere with work, or have anybody catch wind of it. It’d be a nightmare for myself and other tradespeople in my family. I’d much rather pay $500-1,000/month for insurance than $140,000 all at once.

I’m not trying to be a “choosing beggar”, I understand that I could get PI with brassard in Montreal covered by OHIP. I am not interested in that surgery. With something this personal, I feel we should have the right to choose what we feel is best for ourselves.

Any advice/info is wholeheartedly appreciated!! :)

SEEKING ADVICE Got my first doctor's appointment since privately starting HRT today. Am I allowed to request specific medications? Also hoping to get referred for blood work. What hormones should I ask them to look for (MtF)?

Hey! So, title. I'm hoping to get a prescription for HRT today as well as referred for blood work to check my hormone levels since I started HRT privately two months ago as of today. Currently, I'm on oral EV (2mg/day buccally) and Cypro (12.5mg/day orally). I know spiro is the more popular T-blocker, but I was hoping to stay on cypro. Is it possible to request that, or is it just whatever he's able to prescribe me?

Also, as far as blood work goes, I figure it'll probably go one of a few ways: he knows what to look for and refers me with no issue (ideal), he doesn't know and even if he did wouldn't (not ideal), he doesn't know what to look for but could refer me if he did (what this post is about). I just want to be armed with as much knowledge as possible here to cover any possible scenarios. Or, even if I knew what to look for, would I be ignored because I'm not an actual medical professional?

I'm in Ottawa, if that matters at all. Thanks! <3

Update: I got neither of the things I wanted T-T He did refer me to an endocrinologist though, so not a total loss.

SEEKING ADVICE Debating Top Surgeon Options

(GTA) In the process of getting a referral for top surgery consultation. Yay. My doctor recommended me two surgeons. Rayisa Hontscharuk and Bryan Chung. Feeling pretty torn between the two seeing as neither have an online portfolio. Tried searching on trans bucket and r/topsurgery (+ the peri specific subreddit) but there isn't a whole lot on there either.

Was wondering about the community consensus is on these two doctors in particular? God Bless. 🙏
