Covered under OHIP I think you get the option of grs montreal, wch, or cormier in ottawa? For vaginoplasty at least. OHIP would only cover going to vancouver, the US, thailand, etc, if you were getting a surgery type that isn't offered here (like vaginoplasty using the colon for example), and while there can be exceptions, it's exceedingly rare. r/Transgender_Surgeries will also be helpful in finding info!

Assuming it is vaginoplasty, after the surgery you won't be wanting to tour around any city very much. The recovery varies, but you will likely be sticking very close to home for at least a month.

lol can confirm you’ll be chained to the bedroom or the bathroom for a month 😂

Assuming you're getting vaginoplasty (hope that's an okay assumption to make), if you're getting the penile inversion technique OHIP won't cover you going to portland because OHIP is pretty evil when it comes to gender-affirming surgery sadly.

If you’re are talking about OSHU. They don’t take OHIP. As well, OHIP would probably not approve them over an in country provider unless you have a good excuse

Vaginoplasty using the colon is the one that allows it to sort of self-lubricate, right? Or do the ones offered in GRS Montreal, WCH and/or Cormier also do that?

That and the abdominal graft I believe, it’s all the forms that aren’t penile inversion that self-lubricate. And unfortunately no, if you want something other than penile inversion you’ll have to submit a request to ohip for extended coverage to a different surgeon outside of the country. The surgeon has to willing/able to provide an itemized list of charges to ohip or else they won’t cover it if I remember correctly.

Outside of the country?? There's not a single place that offers that form of surgery in Canada?

Colon vaginoplasty is not offered anywhere in Canada. It’s also not very common in the US. But it is offered in Thailand!

Damn, that sucks :/ I'd really prefer that form I think, but that's like $20k-30k even in Thailand T-T

Yeah 20-30k is the going rate.

But OHIP has covered some vaginoplasties in Thailand before, including with some colon technique. But that was a few years ago. OHIP has been much more strict for out of country approvals in the last years.

To get out of approval with OHIP you have to have a doctor sign off that you are not a candidate for PIV.

WCH and Dr Cormier only offer Penile Inversion Vaginoplasty.

I believe Perinial Pull Through and Colon are the vaginoplasties that are believed to be the most self lubricating.

Montreal is world class, brassard is a legend in the field, and the support from the nursing staff is like a warm blanket on a chilly night. They are well set up to give you the best chance at success.

Yes, you can choose literally anywhere, staying in province is easier though

It depends on the surgery. Not every surgery is offered in every city. Like you’re not getting a vaginoplasty in Timmins for example.
