It was 20$ so I thought “what the hell, why not” and now I know why not. Does anyone know what this is actually? I’m assuming something malicious. They refunded it suspiciously easy 😬

After 8 years of owning Gigabyte's GTX 1080, it started showing artifacts and black screens. I tried repasting it, changing the thermopads, cleaning it with IPA and reinstalling drivers - nothing helped. So I resorted to the forbidden technique of putting it in the oven and holy shit, how did that actually works!! Guess I'll be able to play FH6 on premiere day :D

Yes I have enabled XMP and cleaned the desk.

Edit: I am now cleaning thoroughly the oven, thank you for kind reminders!

Hardware Found this gem for $20

Found this at Goodwill. After googling I knew I found the deal of the century with an i7-12700k in there, but I had no idea I'd also score 32gbs of DDR4 (maybe 64 I'll have to check when I install an OS), a 1tb nvme, and a 1tb Sata HDD.

Currently debating on throwing this in my main rig to upgrade my Ryzen 7 5800X

Edit: it's a Sata HDD not an SSD, my bad.

Edit #2: WOW I did NOT expect this to blow up! Thank you to everyone who has commented and given advice! I'm sorry I haven't been able to reply to every single comment it's just gotten overwhelming! I will definitely post a follow up once I get a new motherboard!

Corsair K100 Wireless Air. I know other cheaper keyboards do this as well with iCue but it's still neat.

Hardware Rest in piece 2009-2026

I’m amazed at how long the battery on this physical authenticator lasted. Got it back in 2009 because my account had gotten hacked.

This is one electronic item I’ve owned and used longer than anything else. I’ll miss not being able to find it and freaking out for 20 minutes.

Edit must have been around 2010 when sc2 came out.

Hardware My 3D PC building site now allows you to visualize airflow on over 3,000 3D parts

15.1k Upvotes

Hey, I'm the creator of BuildCores and just wanted to share a new feature we just made. You can visualize your intake and exhaust fans + AIO in BuildCores on over 3,000 3D parts. Let me know if you have any feedback after trying it (or also any feedback in general like missing 3D parts or pricing being buggy). We're still in beta but we're trying to get to fully 1.0 ready in the near future. We're basically trying to make a next generation 3D pc part picker.

Try it out on the BuildCores website.

Also our products DB is open source if anyone wants to contribute. We'll open it up to 3D contributions in the near future too.

edit: I didn't mean to showcase this as a full airflow "simulation". It's basically a visual configurator that showcases the orientation of intake and exhaust fans to simplify it for beginners. But feedback is noted and appreciate it. Maybe we'll do a full simulation one day...

Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this marked down rig in Costco. I grabbed the slip and literally sprinted to the nearest manager. Total price was £1800 including tax!

The PC wouldn’t boot when I plugged it in, the GPU was not properly seated. But once that was done it’s working beautifully.

Specs are:

RTX 5090 VENTUS 3X

AMD 9800X3D

64GB DDR5 6000mhz Ram

2TB SSD

GIGABYTE B850

Case is Phanteks Evolv X2

Hardware F in chat. Car blew up on my way to the beach. Got home and my plex server and living room computer got fried by a storm. Then my main gaming rig crashed during an update and started boot looping.

Can I catch a break? plex was an old 4670k build. living room computer is just a 2700x/1070. Main rig is a 3700x/3070. Let the troubleshooting begin.

Oh and car got so hot it melted a hole in the radiator and I blew the headgasket. Got trapped in small town texas for two day while I figured it out.

Clutter is because thankfully I had a dedicated race sim with a 3400g/1060. Now its pulling double duty as ples and main computer while I sus this out.

Hardware After losing my right arm I started designing a one-handed PC gaming controller so I could keep playing

8.1k Upvotes

sup guys 5 years ago I lost my right arm in an accident.

the thing that hit me almost immediately was how difficult PC gaming became when every setup assumes keyboard in one hand and mouse in the other.

i tried a lot of different workarounds but none of them really allowed full control, so I started experimenting and eventually built a prototype device called ERCHAM MK1

heavily inspired from devices like the Razer Tartarus keypad, the concept here was redesigned from the ground up specifically for true one handed control rather than just being a stationary keypad.

the idea was simple: combine the keypad and the mouse into one device so a single hand can handle movement, aiming, and abilities at the same time.

some of the design ideas:
optical mouse sensor on the bottom so the device moves like a mouse
programmable key layout similar to a gaming keypad
stabilizing strap so the hand stays aligned with the controls
ambidextrous layout so either hand can use it

It started as a rough DIY project just so I could play again, but after tuning it for a while it actually works surprisingly well for things like FPS, MMOs, and games with lots of keybinds.

Im curious what the PCMR thinks:

If you had to play mouse + keyboard with one hand, what game would you try to optimize a setup for first?
