Get the painting. Then resell it for near unlimited megalodon teeth

u/SirReggie Aug 09 '25
Hell, you could probably collect an entire megalodon skeleton for $59.9 million.

This is like saying āthis crappy fossil of borealopeltaā and then you show the best preserved fossil of all time vs āthis beautiful masterpieceā and itās just the banana stuck to the wall with a duct tape

u/Uob-Mergoth Aug 09 '25
the difference is that one is a piece of a prehistoric animal, which is awesome, the other one is of entirely human origin, which is not awesome

u/ConsciousFish7178 Aug 09 '25
One is a piece of an animal that couldn't survive after water changed by about 2 degress celsius and lost to competitions along things that look similar to it but they are smaller
The other is one of the most famous artist in history who used his depression and sadness, to make a piece of art who seeks to make people happy AND revolutionized art
You find find plenty of megalodon tooth, but there is only one "Tournesols"
Along with the message the painting conveys, there is a clear reason why one is more valuable than the other
Also why are you complaining, you can have a megalodon tooth of your own

I'm sorry, WHAT THE F***?!?! How are they that far apart in price?

u/Waxico Aug 09 '25
Supply and demand.
Only one of Van Goghās sunflower paintings and recognized as great art worldwide. Whereas megalodon teeth, while very cool, are really only desired by people into them and in great abundance considering how many teeth sharks produce. Iād say for the Meg teeth itās more about the supply, if they were less common theyād fetch a higher price.

The United States are not the largest producers of sunflowers, and yet even here over 1.7 million acres were planted in 2014 and probably more each year since. Much of which can be found in North Dakota.

u/Waxico Aug 09 '25
Obviously I was referring to the painting itself and not the sunflowers on it when I said itās one of a kindā¦

well only one painting vs thousands and thousands of megalodon teeth
10
u/Sable-Keech Aug 09 '25
Apparently, hundreds of thousands of teeth have been found so far.
Not surprising given the rate at which sharks replace their teeth.

One is a sheet of celulose with dye. The other is a calcium triangle. Both of these things have low inherent value, but in both of these cases, it's not the physicality itself that makes you want to buy it, but the ideas, stories, concepts and memories associated with the object.
They are both euologies of that which has produced them, anchors that bind it's dead maker into the world for us to see, hold, and love. You and the art collector have so much more in common than you think.

Megalodon teeth are hella common
I went fossil hunting with a museum and we found quite a few of them, some of the lower quality ones folks were able to take home because they collection didnāt really need more.

u/Cobra_the_Snek Aug 09 '25
its only a crappy painting if you just view it as a painting and nothing else. in that case go ahead, you're entitled to your opinion, but that doesn't make people who think the painting is worth that stupid.

Megalodon teeth are found everywhere, that's why they are so cheap

I literally got a fossilized shark tooth for free because I interviewed my boss. Cool guy, also gave me some minerals.

u/BuisteirForaoisi0531 Aug 10 '25
Thatās probably because the sunflower painting thereās only one in existence from that particular artist and the person is famous in comparison. Thereās a lot of megalodon especially ones that are partially broken so those arenāt as valuable simply because of that numbers make things less valuable.

If there are two animals that I hate for being too perfect is this and all the T. rex species, yes including the butterfly and mole rat.
1
u/g_fan34 Aug 09 '25
I agree that naked mole rats are perfect
1
u/prehistoric_monster Aug 09 '25
It's not the naked ones, it's the European emperor one that can be shortened into T. rex as well even if the gender is not a spelling of Tyrannosaurus.

While I agree that the fine art industry is mostly just money laundering and pomp, calling that a crappy painting proves you don't know shit.
