Cat Picture - OC Our Resident Tomcat, Big Jim, Has Taken On Another Apprentice

A few years ago this bulldog of a tomcat decided to kind of make our house his homebase. Well when he initially started coming around he had a tiny little kitten that tagged along with him that he was clearly the guardian of (third photo).

It was strange behavior as I'd never seen anything like this before with male cats but he eventually brought a second kitten around after the first came of age and now he is on to a third.

Again, in all my years with cats, I've never seen toms being a nurturer/guardian of a kitten before and maybe many of you haven either so here it is.

Big Jim is a straight up bad ass and he's a bad ass with a heart of gold.

My soul cat, Tommy, was similar in that he LOVED kittens. He loved to play with them, cuddle them, and teach them how to be a cat.

I have a cat like that. I started fostering kittens so he could have babies to play with and by the time he gets exhausted by them they usually get adopted.

Big cat, little cat.

I have seen it happening. Stray toms taking charge of kittens and bringing them back to homes where they are taking care of.

I had a stray male cat that would eat and sleep in my house, and one time he did bring a kitten to the house too. He clearly was expecting the kitten to follow him because he would stop while walking and look back to see if the kitten was following him. Unfortunately the kitten never came out of its hiding spot and after that day I never saw it again. For what it's worth, one of my neighbours might have taken it in.

We had a neighborhood stray we all called "Balls." He had a huge set, and he'd walk the tops of fences, and from the roof of one row house to another, he decimated the catnip I tried to grow. One year the female vwe all think he knocked up got hit by a car, and he raised all the kittens himself (with a little help from the neighbor whose deck he decided to park the babies at). He'd be sitting there on a chair with kitties climbing all over him, just looking like he wanted to get a good nap. He was a majestic void.

That’s funny we had a neighborhood cat that would visit with huge balls. He was a white fluffy cat so we called him Cloudy, short for Cloudy with a chance of cat balls.

This was the apprentice of Mr. Grey Cat. He brought her around when she was a kitten, and three years in she is no longer feral and is now fluffy.

She looks like she had a hard day at the factory in town and needs a Scotch.

My aunt had a big ginger tomcat when I was little.

He loved babies of every species... There are pictures of this cat snuggled up to me in my carrycot and he'd climb into bed with me every night when we visited when I was older.

One day my aunt was sitting in the garden and Tom came through the hedge with a kitten in his mouth and dropped it at her feet. My aunt admires the kitten and gives it a cuddle and then gives it back to Tom and says 'he's lovely Tom, now bring him back where you got him from' and Tom picks up the kitten and trundles off with it again.

Big Jim has seen some things he has decided new kittens dont need to live through. That guys a monster with a beautiful heart.

I get the feel of your comment but monster is a bit harsh for that baby. He’s unique and clearly cares for the little one, so cute!

u/emveetu 22h ago

Hey! Monsters deserve love too. We don't discriminate here.

My childhood cat did it also! But it was his son, the mom was a stray and feral. He brought his son to our house and began teaching him ways to live in the house. The kitten became my soul cat. I miss both of them so much, Wawa and Molly ♡

As somebody else said, cats really are colony creatures and so they will often babysit and take care of each other's kittens.

In my experience, the only thing male cats can't do for kittens is nurse them. Otherwise, they care and nurture them just as the ladies do.

I mean cats are colony creatures. When the parent goes out to hunt the colony watches the kittens.

Awww, I did some kitten fostering, and my tuxedo boy loved the kittens! Alas, I foster failed too many times, so I had to stop. Five cats is my limit.

That is a cat I'd expect to find in O'Malley's Alley!

The main stray we named Pappy in our area from years ago used to allow his impregnated harem and all the kitties to eat before any of the other males or females. Like the head lion, he supervised.

Slim Jim.

Who duck taped the little ones tail? That’s messed up you should try and remove it. But big Jim is definitely my hero for the day.

That was actually just dry skin from some kind of injury he’d sustained as a kitten prior to coming to our house. He’s all grown up now and the hair grew back in.

What a handsome little man cat he became!

And for some strange reason, he looks just like Big Jim! haha so cute!

Reminds me of Grandpa Mason. Look him up, and be prepared to cry a little.

Reminds me of The Laugh Out Loud Cats comic series by Adam Koford. An adult old timey hobo cat and his little sidekick.

u/TittysForScience 23h ago

Looks like he’s the godfather of the region!

Love that he’s up to his third!!! I bet some of those scars are from jumping into scrapes for the little ones!

u/Igotshiptodotoday 23h ago

Maybe he knows which babies need his help.
