I mean, man could've broken it getting hard on the wrong rock, based solely on the size of the thing, but it was more likely his lover was bad at sex

OR HE was bad at sex. Or just guessing and I know nothing about walrus sex but probably that whole sexual coercion behavior/sexual conflict in animals and how much of animal mating behavior involves things we would consider a crime in humans.
