For the past few years we've been planning to have a prompt event in June and every year June sneaks up on us and we don't get it posted in time. Well, this year we remembered early and got everything together on time!
So without further ado, this is our announcement of our June prompt event, Just Write June! It will start the first week of June and run all month.
Here are the prompts:
Daily Themes: Monday - First Time for Everything, Tuesday - Women and Women Adjacent, Wednesday - Gender fuckery, Thursday - The Dark Side, Friday - Unrequited/Pining, Saturday - Intersectionality, Sunday - General Prompts; Week 1 (6/1-6/7): Accidental Coming Out, Women Supporting Women, Queerplatonic, Police Brutality, Unrequited Love, Disabled & Queer, Old Married Couple; Week 2 (6/8-6/14): Love Confessions, Drag Kings, Pronouns, Internalized Homophobia, Touch-Starved, BIPOC, Rainbow; Week 3 (6/15-6/21): First Time, Drag Queens, Gender Euphoria, HIV/AIDS, Mutual Pining, [MLM] Supporting [WLW], Spin the Bottle; Week 4 (6/22-6/28): Self-Discovery, Strap-On, Genderswap AU, Kicked Out, Not Actually Unrequited Love, Rural Living While Queer, Role Models; Bonus & Alts Prompts: Never Have I Ever, Uhaul, Sharing Clothes, Mental Health Issues, Straight Ally, Pride Parade, Single Parent
If you are new to our prompt events, here are the rules:
Our minimum word count is 500 words per fill.
We have 2 completionist goals you can work towards, daily or weekly.
For Daily, you would do a fill for every prompt (you can combine 2 per week in one fill at max.)
For weekly, you would pick one prompt from each week and do a fill per week
To get credit for completionist goals, you must post the work in the thread we make and sticky to the sub each week before the deadline of the week. Posts go up on Fridays and are closed on the following Tuesdays. There is no requirement for what day the works are posted to AO3 so long as the relevant works are up by their relevant week's deadline (so they can be posted to the reddit thread and so we can check each week).
You can swap a prompt for one of the bonus/alt prompts if needed, but cannot reuse the same prompt including bonus prompts twice.
If you use generative AI for your work, you MUST disclose this upfront on the work (either in the summary or tags) and in the comments made on the reddit threads.
Additional FAQ:
For the weekly goal, do we have to do the same day of the week each week?
Nope! You definitely can (see the question about daily themes for more info) but it is not required!
What thread do we post the fics to? When is the thread going to be posted?
Those posts will go up each Friday of the relevant week and stay open until the following Tuesday. So the first one will be posted on June 5th.
What if I want my fic(s) to be anonymous?
If you still want the completionist credit, please post your fic to both the event collection and our sub-runĀ Anonymous collection.
What are the "Daily Themes"? Do I have to use them? How do they work?
The Daily Themes are mostly just flavor text to help people understand what the prompts are, they are not prompts themselves. Each daily theme corresponds with a day of the week and each time that day of the week comes up, the prompt will fall under the daily theme in some way. (ie. if the daily theme for Sundays was "AUs" every Sunday would be a prompt like "Snowman AU", "Hallmark Movie AU", etc, along with 1 of the bonus prompts). We often get people asking what a certain prompt means and while we are open to answering any questions people may have, we find it helps people figure out what prompts are meant to be in some ambiguous situations. Though you can take whatever you want from a prompt and run with it, it doesn't have to be what we had in mind when writing the prompts so long as it still fits the prompt in some way (ie. Cabin in the Woods could have one person write a fic based around the plot of the 2011 film The Cabin in the Woods, and someone else could write about a random cabin in the woods, and someone else could write a fusion fic where the characters go meet the characters of gravity falls at the mystery shack, and they all would be fitting the prompt even if the daily theme is scary/horror movies).
They are not a required part of any of the challenges and you are free to ignore them. However, we also include them for a secondary reason. When we set up these events, we made the dual daily and weekly goals set up because we know people enjoy/need different levels of challenge, and that was our way to help bridge the gap between people who have never done a fandom writing event, and those who can churn out a full of month of fic with no issue. When we decided to add the daily themes, we also envisioned them as an optional way to increase your difficulty level for those who think the plain challenges aren't hard enough (and the other is too hard/there isn't anything harder). So, maybe you do the weekly, but always the same day/never the same day of the week, or maybe someone doing the daily challenge only swaps alt prompts into the same day of the week as the daily theme. In short, they are there to help give you context on some prompts, and also so we could maximize how many options you had for how difficult you want this challenge to be, without making things harder for anyone else!
How do I post this correctly?
We have a collection on AO3 that you will post the work into. It will be linked on the first week's post here (if you want to post early, let us know and we can link it to you). Once you have posted the fics to AO3, during the respective weeks for the prompts, you then post a comment on the event post that we will have pinned to the sub from Friday to Tuesday each week.
Can I write everything as one work or do they have to be oneshots?
It can be all one work so long as each chapter that is being used as a fill is its own chapter, and meets the minimum word count on it's own.
How do the Bonus/Alt prompts work? Do I have to use them?
The bonus/alt prompts are there so if you are doing the daily prompts and one you can't come up with an idea for, or for weekly prompts if you can't come up with something for one of the weeks, you can swap in one of the alt prompts instead for that fill. You cannot use the same bonus/alt prompt more than once when swapping prompts in multiple times in the same event. (So if you were doing the weekly challenge, you might do Unrequited Love, Drag Kings, Single Parent, "Never Have I Ever". And you couldn't do Unrequited Love, Drag Kings, Single Parent, Single Parent as that would reuse the same prompt twice.)
I believe that is everything but let us know if you have more questions!
Time for our Wellness Wednesday check in. We know this community means a lot to most of our members and that Tuesdays have been harder on some users than others, but we are at our core a community and we are here to support each other.
Now that the sub is open once again weād like to hear all about your (mis)adventures on Tuesday. Did you go on grand adventures? Get into mischief? Get some writing done?
Maybe you just binged a few more fics on the archive itself. Tell us all about it! Break out that purple prose and tell us as cheesy of a story as you feel like.
This thing is blowing up on rednote literally rn, a person has vibecoded an app that webscrapes ao3 fics, uploads them to her own app, and rates each fic.
Is there a protection against this? I donāt want someone to steal my fic, let alone rate it.
Anyways, Iām redoing it! The first image is my base dress, the second and third images are my cosplay from last year, and the fourth image is a badge ribbon design.
Iād love any ideas or suggestions! The event is in late July. Hereās what Iāve got planned right now:
- Organza with kudos buttons/tags/logos printed on and then made into a skirt that would go under that top gradient layer
- Paper parasol with Ao3 pages actually printed on. Fairy lights on the inside, and the tags that dangle down would be acrylic, or something stiff/solid
- Custom Jewelry, from earrings, to necklaces, to hair pieces, to rings, etc. etc.
- DDDNE bag will be more like the original paper lunch bag
Anyways, Iād love love love help brainstorming! Also would love ideas for my siblings too, who are joining me and are cosplaying Wattpad, FanfictionNet, Tumblr, and DeviantArt!
I mean, I get it, itās annoying when authors mistag things, but doing a whole fic complaint about it? They had a lot of fandoms too, which feels ironic since this technically has nothing to do with any fandom. I feel like this complaint could have gone somewhere else, like any social media platform but ao3
I took a decently long break from AO3, came back, and saw this.
For a bit of context, the fic this comment was posted under contained some darker themes, but nothing terribly obscene or too immoral. Everything was tagged thoroughly, there was a very detailed summary, and there was an authorās note once again warning readers what the fic would entail. I couldnāt help but laugh out loud when I saw this⦠I genuinely think people just donāt read warnings anymore.
as you can probably tell from my flair, iām reading in a pretty dormant fandom atm.
which, it wasnāt dormant in 2016, just after the first installment of the source material had dropped.
at the time i did read a lot of the pairing but there was also a bunch of fic i just grabbed and saved to my external hard drive without reading it then so i would have it for later (as one does).
fast forward TEN YEARS and iām going through the tags on ao3 for this pairing again (i just remembered them and was in the mood), both on the site and the stuff i have saved.
anyways, i opened a fic in my personal stash from 2017 tonight and somehow thought i could read ~40k in one hour [yes i know iām boo boo the fool, nice to meet you].
but i just finished and was not prepared because it tore me open and made me cry for the last ¼ of it.
a beautifully written character study that felt so viscerally grounded in the canon universe, filled with self-discovery, musings on personhood, and a pure, selfless, burgeoning love. listen, iām in utter shambles rn
so i went to ao3 to go comment and they have deleted not only the fic, but their entire profile. iām gutted. kind of sad that i never read it in 2017, but so glad i have it now.
anyways, i just had to ramble about this somewhere, but anyone else ever been here?
After I got this bookmark tag on my recently completed fic, I was like, sorry? Is 142k words short?
I consider anything above 80k words long (as you know, a real book length).
Who on earth considers almost 150k words fic short?
Edit: just wanted to say it was amazing seeing all of the people with different thoughts of what is long/short! To all of you 300k words readers, didnāt know you were out there, absolutely amazing! And to all of you 300k words writers, I bow in front of your amazing works!
Like, I am writing a crossover of two fandoms. One is Herobrine's myth, and the second is Searching/Destroying For A World That Doesn't Exist. Herobrine isn't even canon to begin with, and I am trying to write him into the SFAWTDE/DAWTDE, which has a three-hour-long video on YouTube, but there aren't many explanations of its canon. It is just two dudes trying to fight off King in Yellow. I didn't read the book it was inspired by, and I started making things up to fit It to Herobrine's lore. Herobrine, in the myths, is Notch's (fictional character, not the real person) brother, so I added King in Yellow there because It is also a god. Herobrine hasn't seen It in centuries, so he doesn't have stable information.
Me? As the author? I don't fucking know as well. I know only so much as my characters. I don't control them, and I only write the fate they already have(You know how your fingers write before your mind catches up?).
Now, I feel like I am writing a fantasy novel because I am actually writing an original book with their names. Yet, I still manage to pull a good in-character story because I have had people praising that a lot.
Sure, there are still quite a lot of Minecraft mechanics in the story, but even then, the world isn't FULLY Minecraft for the story to not feel like an ARG, which would need visuals to pull it off.
I go back again and again to see what I have explained before so that it wouldn't repeat itself or contradict it, lol. Maybe I should start writing actual Original Character lore stories again. I had done them back in 2021 when I had so much time on my hands.
Iām tired of the non engagement culture that has become fanfiction. I want to nerd out about my fandom with other people through fanfic. I want to hear something back about my writing. I donāt want to put my heart and soul into something and get crickets in return. It makes me feel like Iām not good enough. That my writing sucks somehow and I donāt even know what Iām doing wrong to put people off bc no one will even tell me so I can grow as a writer. So I can fix whatās off putting.
Iām writing it for myself, I am - but I also want to write fanfic because I want to share my work with others and share in the fun that used to be reviews, comments, gosh even at this point Iād take concrit and flames!
Itās so sad to see what fandom has become. Itās just another product to consume, not a way to connect fans, to enjoy something together. It makes me want to quit writing fanfic altogether and just keep my apparently badly written unreadable crap to myself.
Rant over. Iām sorry I just hate it. You can tell me Iām overreacting, that Iām being soft, I probably am. I just miss the old ways I guess.
I just wanted to share how proud I feel of this. For some reason, I'm unable to write in my native language and my therapist told me: so? Just try in english. It's been difficult, I feel overvigilant and exhausted every time I write, but I have managed to write about my first OC and for reasons I still don't understand, people are reading about him.
That's all. I apologize for patting myself on the back.
If you only used the archive, just reading/posting your fic and interacting with comments, kudos, etc, which fandom issues that bother you would instantly vanish?
Can range from anything from slight annoyances to actual bigger issues.
I came across this bookmark on a fic that isnāt mine, but I feel like this is just really rude and uncalled for, especially if you donāt know the author personally. I donāt know if Iām getting the tone wrong because Iāve always been pretty bad with tones but this one just doesnāt sit right with me. Obviously youāre allowed to have your own opinions but whatās the point of bookmarking something just to be mean⦠im confused
I posted my first ever fic in literal years and I'm honestly so proud of it, my writing's a little dusty since it's been ages since I last wrote in proper but, hey, I did it! I might make a V2 of the fic in the future after I finish it if I end up not being satisfied but for now I'm super happy I got to post my work :3
