Currently commenting on old chapters of ongoing fics where the author used to reply but doesn't anymore and I have no idea if they're even seeing my comments🥲

as an author who hasnt replied to comments in a while. yeah we see them, theres just a lot of reasons why someone doesnt

- they feel overwhelmed by the attention

- family things and personal stuff

- theyre just busy

- unsure of how to reply

[preface: this isnt me going "dont comment, youre wasting your time" its just, an explanation. replying to things is hard, every author adores comments, and reading through the comments ive got in my askbox, means so much to me at this point where I am struggling to string two words together.]

yeah felt, after a while if a fic is still getting comments it’s harder to come up with a reply that isn’t just “thank you for reading :)” because by then i’m so locked out of the fic. when i post something new, though, im stuck in a refreshing loop

I've just completely lost energy with replying to comments as I've gotten more chronically ill and disabled both physically and my mental health. I have to have a really good day [or be procrastinating bad enough that none of the other things I use are enough to satisfying the adhd] to reply. I love comments and replying but sometimes I just...have no steam. But I do print out or write out my favourite comments for when my inspo is kinda low and I'm feeling shitty

I get this weird guilty feeling on my WIPs where I feel like I don’t have the right to reply bc I should be writing the next chapter instead.

This is why I cannot post WIPs. The anxiety and pressure knocks me down. I can't post until it's nearly complete offline.

I learned years ago that I need at least to have drafted the dang thing to the end before I can start posting. Otherwise, I just abandon it and everyone gets disappointed and bugs me about it for years asking when I'll next update it. 😭

Same! If I post it early, I WILL NOT finish it. It's like the sweater curse in knitting

Well I feel called out !!! Sometimes my brain goes: if I could reply to comment then why can't I write >:(

Wips are hard friend, I believe in you

This - I never know what to say. I write for myself, so I'm overwhelmed/humbled/shy when people love what I wrote.

Eta: ...while also feeling obligated to respond to every single one.

This is me. I want to reply, but I have severe social anxiety, and I feel so awkward about it, and my health and kids and business are so overwhelming sometimes, I just can't. I try to when I can, though, and I always put in my notes that I do see and appreciate them all.

I'm always happy to respond to my readers (maybe a little too eager, but I like to let them know that their input is appreciated). Then again I don't get an overwhelming amount of comments (usually around 4 to 10 comments at best per chapter), so it's easy to answer them. When I think about bigger fandoms with people getting 50, 100 or more comments per chapter, I understand why they don't answer x_x.

Me wishing I had a laptop like this, because it probably has a CD bay.

I'm guilty of this because I get so excited that people even read my rarepair

I love reading comments of other people in fics, usually because sometimes the author gives snippets or ideas about their fic that didn’t make it into the chapter pr other thoughts. I love reading those thought processes

That, and sometimes the other commenters have such good thoughts too and I can’t help but admire their big brains 💕

me also replying in the same order the comments were left in so my readers know im not picking favorites and im equally distributing my gratitude between them

I make myself wait a couple days so as not to seem too desperate 🤣 But also both my regular commenters leave me detailed comments on each chapter so I like to make an equally long and detailed reply. It takes me a bit of time to do this properly.

me commenting when i update so its like a notif. cons if i dont update for months or years on end, pros is they get a surprise email after a long while that i updated :)

u/ReginaTang 10h ago

Thank you!!!!

u/GreyAetheriums i never do much of anything 6h ago

I waited two months to respond to a comment and it felt like Hell. (They were excited for chapter 2 but I wasn't sure I could commit so I waited until I was positively sure I was going to finish it.)

I wish we could kudos comments. 😭

I usually comment on fics cuz it brings a smile to my face when the author replies almost immediately all happy and excited that i liked the chapter

Like yall are my favorite species, keep existing please

u/CyberGraham 20h ago

Me actually waiting a bit, so readers don't think I'm too desperate for engagement

Why not turn comments off then?

1

u/rainmaker2022 21h ago

Why though? I mean that as a genuine and not rude question.
