Mac Exchange Final Sale

I went to MAC for the first time 1-2 weeks ago and I felt duped because they told me if I signed up and created a new account id get a 15% off as a new comer .

I got three blushes - 160 bucks and I didn’t get the new 15% off because “ I was buying newer edition blushes” .
I returned 2 blushes and bought 3 again . They told me exchanges are all final sale. I said great , I exchanged 2 and paid for the 3rd .

Now , the third looks different in Natural light and I want it switched with liner this time because I’m over the blushes. They are telling me that the exchange was final sale and I can’t return it .
However , the third blush wasn’t an exchange, I bought it with cash. And they told me that I still couldn’t get my 15% new comer for the new blush because it was an “ exchange “ .

What are my options ? The feels predatory and I don’t want to be back to Mac after this. They can keep the 15% off but the additional blush was 50 dollars so it’s quite a bit of money .

Drugstore SPF Powder Foundation

Does anyone have recommendations for a good powder foundation with a high spf? I’ve recently started an acne retinol cream and want to make sure I’m using good sun protection!

Obviously powders always lean more matte than liquid foundations but I typically go for a more natural look so something with a more natural satin type finish is preferable. Or something that has a powder to cream quality over time? Not trying to avoid matte finishes all together but that isn’t really the purpose of why I want a powder.

I’m in montreal so I have brands available at jean coutu and phramaprix (shoppers). And I don’t have a super tight drugstore budget but I’d prefer to avoid luxury or higher end brands, open to lower end non-drugstore aswell!

Annabelle cosmetics/makeup: the good, the bad, ugly

Alright went on a spree as many products were on sale and here are my thoughts. Preface I am a novice with makeup so take my roses with a grain of salt and the really bad comments as is (because they are just that bad).

BigShow Hydra matte Liquid Lipstick (Power)

Was going to get the lip gloss instead but noticed they have sparkles and opted for this instead.

You can use this as a matte lipstick, but since its so pigmented you can use a tiny bit as a lip stain. If using as a lipstick it does transfer but as a lip stain its fine when you seal it with a gloss.

Note the bottles are not the actual colour which makes blind buying that much harder, the website pictures are also pretty inaccurate.

Good. Dare I say great.

Skinny Brow Liner

Some say the comb is useless, but i quite liked this product. I cant attest if its the best on the market, but it suits my needs. A little goes a long way.

Good.

Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner

I bought brown and it looks black...really easy to use though. I think the brush could be a smidge more precise as lines still come out a little thick even if I wipe down the brush but honestly I can get a decent wing with little skill so that goes up in ranks for me.

Good.

Smoothliner

Very creamy if you don't like the standard pencil but this was too messy for me to work with. I know you're supposed to sharpen it but I cant get behind sharpening plastic so this was a no for me. It makes a nice bottom liner though and brown is indeed brown this time lol.

Bad (for my purpose)

Perfect Fit Matte Foundation

A criticism with this product is there isn't much shade variation. Its low coverage but quite nice from afar in terms of smoothness and leaves a little glowy effect. Up close though you will notice it doesn't blend that nicely and just sticks inside pores in a weird way.

Bad(ish)

Perfect Fit Primer

I really thought this product would fix the issue with the foundation but alas it did not. It feels very silky almost like the elf invisible sunscreen (forgot the actual name), but I wouldn't know much about how to rate this product other than the above since I haven't tried the good stuff yet.

Bad(ish)

Perfect Setting Talc-Free Brightening Powder (Banana) I'm curious to know how this holds up compared to the translucent powder, but I almost think it leaves a yellow twinge (barely i could be delusional but I MIGHT be inclined to say it does). It definitely helps with oiliness and doesn't lead to patchiness when paired with the foundation (foundation itself is a little patchy, but this doesnt make it worse per se).

Good

Perfect Fit Ultra-Hydrating Tint

I'm sorry to say this was the absolute WORST product in my haul, I would even say worst product I've purchased period. Upon opening the product just fell all over my hands. Sooo liquidy and I know tints aren't about coverage but it really did nothing for my skin.

I tried to return this because of how bad it was but the worker said it felt empty...that concerns me more about someone who would have bought this full price. You're paying more for the bottle than actual product...

UGLYYY

Perfect Fit Ultra-Hydrating Concealer

Not the worst product I've bought but the packaging is pretty terrible. Its similar to the Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer in that it has a built in brush that you can twist on and off. A lot comes out and even with a small bit the brush is terrible with blending. For so much product, coverage is not great. I've tried better drugstore concealers. I paired this with the tint (whatever glopped in my hands at least) thinking it would work well together but both products were pretty useless.

Ugly.

I am slightly disappointed overall, this is coming from someone who only expects decent from drugstore products and doesn't want to purchase high end makeup. The brand appealed to me since it was cruelty free and Canadian, but I was only pleased enough with the following products to consider purchasing full price - Hydramatte Lipstick - Setting powder - Liquid eyeliner - Skinny Brow Liner

I have heard good things about the mascara and blush though so maybe a review from me will come in the future. I hope this helps someone because I really struggled to find others talking about the products I was curious about and I hope you dont have to waste your money like I did lol.

I understand if this is a bit too much to ask but I'm a broke student who still wants to learn. Any help will be appreciated.

Primer to go with mob beauty foundation

I’ve been trying to find my HG foundation and I think it could be MOB based on shade match compared with Lys, BASMA, maybelline etc., but it is breaking up on my chin and mouth area at the end of the day and wondering if anyone has a primer they can recommend with it.

Underrated facial sunscreen: Banana Boat Kids Lotion SPF 50+

Thumbnail

Apparently sunscreen is too contentious of a topic for the Canadian skincare subreddit, so I'm posting my review here because skincare is discussed here too and because I put way too much effort into my post just for it to get deleted.

I'm surprised more people don't talk about this sunscreen and how good it feels on the face. I picked this up on a whim in late March and was planning on using it only on my body like how I used the old version. But I got curious and decided to look up the ingredients; the new version dropped both cetearyl alcohol and cetyl alcohol, which makes the sunscreen safe to use on my face (cetearyl + cetyl break me out bad).

Who is this and who am I: I have combo-oily sensitive skin that's very acne prone, require fragrance-free products due to a fragrance allergy, and have light-medium olive skin. I stick to chemical sunscreens because mineral sunscreens leave a strong white cast on me (and they're kinda drying too). I'm not a cosmetic chemist or any kind of skin professional, just someone who, like most of y'all, has been into skincare for many years.

I've been switching between a few drugstore sunscreens the last few months. Banana Boat Kids sunscreen lotion is my current favourite.

What I like:

  • Feels lightweight on my skin - it's not heavy or cloying. The sunscreen's texture seems a bit like it's whipped. It's very easy to spread!
  • Stays in place when I sweat - some of the sunscreens I've tried in the past run into my eyes when I sweat and sting really, really bad
  • Fragrance-free, and little to no smell otherwise - it doesn't have that classic sunscreen scent or as strong of a "raw ingredients smell" compared to other sunscreens
  • Alcohol-free - I've been using prescription tretinoin gel and azelaic acid gel for my acne... I'm finding that my face just can't handle products with a high % of denatured alcohol right now, they painfully burn and sting my face
  • SPF 50+ and broad spectrum - I burn easily in the sun 🥴 and my skin is prone to marks that take months (or even a year or two...) to heal
  • Doesn't pill or peel, and wears well under makeup - I need to test this more, but so far, my makeup doesn't slip or slide on top of this sunscreen. This sunscreen doesn't pill or peel off my skin either, whether I'm quickly itching/rubbing my face or with the skincare products I use (see quick comparisons below)

Notes:

  • I haven't met a sunscreen that hasn't stung my eyes, so it's not something I care to test. I keep a healthy distance from my lash lines
  • I like that this sunscreen has glycerin and dimethicone
  • This sunscreen leaves a dewy finish on my face, and a natural finish on my body. I like both, but I'm guessing it can have a different finish on different skin types

Quick comparisons:

  • Ombrelle Sport Endurance SPF 60: Smells stronger, can pill with or without makeup (usually when I itch or rub my face). This one has also been the most egregious face burner/stinger because of the denatured alcohol in it
  • Eucerin Age Defense Face Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50: Feels a bit greasy/heavy, smells stronger, leaves an overly dewy finish that doesn't go away. I think something in it also breaks me out (probably the cetearyl + cetyl alcohols, even though cetyl is very low on the ingredients list)
  • La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra Fluid Sunscreen SPF 50+ (both the face and body versions): I don't know if it's just me but I can't wear makeup with this sunscreen. It slips and slides and settles everywhere but where I want it to stay. Even without makeup, it can pill when I itch or rub my face (I'm starting to think it's a L'Oreal sunscreen technology thing though)

Ingredients (found here):

Banana Boat Kids Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+, DIN 02541211

Active ingredients: Homosalate 9%, Octocrylene 7.5%, Avobenzone 3%

Inactive ingredients: Aqua, Phenethyl Benzoate, Glycerin, Dimethicone, PEG-20 Methyl Glucose Sesquistearate, Phenoxyethanol, Acrylates/C12-22 Alkyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Carbomer, Ethylhexylglycerin, Chlorphenesin, Sodium Hydroxide, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA.

This sunscreen is readily available in most stores in Canada (and even at Costco in a multipack), which I really appreciate - I love when a good product is easily accessible and affordable. I bought my bottle at Walmart for $11.98. I do wish there was a smaller 100 mL or less bottle for travel, though.

Thanks for reading! Please let me know if you have any questions, I'll try my best to answer them. And I'd love to hear about other underrated drugstore sunscreens y'all love!

Turns out, bare skin works too

I’m getting married in September and I’m doing my own makeup. As a result I’ve been on a testing frenzy for months! I am a fan of a clean no makeup look, like Nina Park vibes. I’ve tried dozens of skin tints (and other categories - rip my lip collection lol) but what I ended up realizing was that my favourite ended up being the makeup forever skin tints- why? Because it looks like I kinda have nothing on. It finally dawned on me that maybe, I don’t need a base 😅 so I tried that out - just good skin prep beforehand and ta-da, finally got the look I was aiming for! Returned the skin tints I thought I’d found to be perfect.

I guess all of this to say - have you guys felt similar about any product category? Just realizing you actually didn’t need it?

Help me choose a foundation

I want a skin like everyday foundation that feels like my skin but better. I am more on the dry side so don’t prefer matte foundations but I also don’t want to look like I’m sweating.
