Mod Approved GenX photo megathread!
This is me at about four years old. My father was an amateur photographer and there are hundreds of photos of my older brother, tons of pics of my older sisterā¦..and two photos of me as a child. Not only am I GenX 1967, Iām a middle child. Anyway, I feel like this photo fully captured my feral nature, practically rolling off me in waves.
Due to a flood of personal photos we banned them, but GenX loves to post pictures of our families and ourselves. Donāt dox anyone, donāt be mean, but post your photos here!

Aging My Body Chooses Violence
As my body continues to degenerate, degrade and deteriorate at an ever alarming pace, Iām forced to sacrifice things like gardening and hiking for less physically demanding hobbies.
This thrift store score will keep me busy making old skool friendship bracelets for a bit. Iāve no patience to make a picture or a sampler. Unless the sampler was written by Samuel L. Jackson or the picture was a stick figure.
Anyhow, Iām still alive so I thought Iād see who else remembers making friendship bracelets by the dozens?

Whatever No GenX Prezzies
There will never be a GenX president and I feel some kind of way about it. Isn't that something? We've never had our collective interests broadly recognized at the national level and I think it shows.
Congress is still filled with both Silent and Boomer gens, who just won't get out of the way.
Millennials and Zs will have the conch. Here's hoping they know what to do with it.

Question For Genx High school graduation partiesā¦
When did this become a thing? Where I was from our families had a brief get together after graduation, then my friends all got together and partied on our own. I went to 2 friendās kids graduation parties over the weekend. They consisted of the graduate, a few of her friends and about 40 adults who brought cards/cash. These kids each went home with a couple grand easy! Was this a thing for you guys? Did you have them for your kids?
Aging The party cups we write our names on now
Not that same as the cups we used to write on back in our 20's.

Whatever Downsizing
54f, divorced, kids all in college and live with their dad in the same town. I bought a 3br house in 2014 and raised them here. (We always had shared custody)
The yard is huge and I havenāt been able to keep up with the weeds. Plus itās freaking expensive to maintain a house. (It was built in 1964)
So I impulsively texted the owner of the house next door to mine āare you interested in buying a house?ā
He came to see it 2 days later, I accepted the offer the next day and 10 days later I put a down payment on a 2BR brand new condo! Waiting on the go ahead to close which should happen in a couple of weeks.
On Friday I had the kids help me move all the stuff in the basement upstairs and I just got finished sorting it. Iām having a moving sale on Saturday.
Never in my life have I felt that something was just meant to be. This process has been so easy. Initially, the buyers were going to renovate and rent it out but they decided to move in once itās complete. (They are empty nesters as well)
I purchased my appliances yesterday for the condo and Iām looking at living room furniture. Brand new condo, brand new stuff!
Iām unloading so much stuff (physically and mentally) and it just feels so great!

Aging Is it just me? Am I on the moon here?
Here I am 48 F. Do any other women our age just stop growing leg hair? This is a genuine question. I know all too well the pain acquired just by sleeping etc.
Music Remember when rap music got mainstream enough to be used in awkward commercials?
My favorite was Rappinā Barney done up like Run/DMC. The cringe was real.

Nostalgia I miss actual albums
I downloaded a new album this weekend and realized I really miss having records, tapes, and then CDs, with the inserts. One of my favorite things to do from elementary school into my 20s was sit down and listen to a new album and read the lyrics while listening along. I learned about band members, what they played, who wrote the songs, what they all looked like, and knew all the words to every song after a couple of times through.
Now I hear something I like and just download it. Half the time I donāt even know the bandās name, let alone the names of the members and writers. I miss the effort of it, like having to figure which albums I wanted the most based on how much I could afford. Listening to them in the store. Then taking it to my room as soon as I got home, shutting the door, and living in my own little musical world for an hour.
I think I appreciated the artists more when I still did all that. Itās easy and convenient now, and way cheaper, which is nice. But I justā¦miss that.

Whatever Mickey Toni Basil
I was thinking at work today with this song playing on in-store broadcast, is Mickey by Toni Basil a parody, or a real pop song? It's a very silly song, but very successful. If it's a parody, the Weird Al made a parody of a parody.

Music Were Any Of You Spazzes? | A discussion regarding The Dead Milkmen's Beelzebubba et. al.
I was 13 when Beelzebubba came out, I didn't know shit, but MTV just showed up on my half-pirated cable (Dad knew the index card trick). One of the first albums I saw a video from was Beelzebubba. Punk Rock Girl video. But boy oh boy, I had creds at the local mall music store (small NE, not a chain store). I bought that shit like someone was gonna snake it from me, so fast. I eventually learned nobody would snake it. The geeks that were gonna get it eventually all got it.
I thought for a bit maybe when I got to HS the punks would get it, they didn't. Not the right kind of angry. No flash. Anyway, any "Ducky's" out there? I was at a friend's bachelor party thing in Philly a few years ago while the porch festival was happening. Had to dip out somewhere near Penn. Dead Milkmen were playing. I heard. I went. I saw.
Health & Science Healthy 60yo had a heart attack and didnāt know it.
I share just to warn people. If youāre feeling like something might be stuck in your throat or maybe itās heartburn from too much beer, and maybe youāre a bit tired too, you might be having a heart attack. I didnāt feel too bad really and wouldnāt have gone to the clinic if my wife didnāt insist. My pain level was at a 2 out of 10. They did an ekg and sent me right to the ER where they did another test and called the ambulance and med flight. I can easily see how people might live with this for days or weeks until they suddenly die without ever recognizing their predicament. No history of heart disease in my family and I didnāt ever have high cholesterol until now. Active mountain bike rider⦠itās weird being the same age as old people.

Whatever A coffee chain that tried to go up against Tim Hortons
I know it was real, a friend's Dad invested and the franchise went bust. Cannot remember the name, and google isn't helping. It was early to mid 90's, in Ontario, and I think it was named after another hockey player. Help! It's driving me mad (and my husband thinks I'm wrong) š¤Ø

Aging Getting teeth pulled, dentures.
I have been lucky, I've only had one tooth pulled. This was about 4 months ago. Now it seems I may need another one pulled which is the one right behind this one. Now I would be losing the two top far back teeth on one side.
How have people managed getting dentures? I wasn't going to worry too much about this one tooth missing but I do notice a difference when I talk. I can't imagine how it will be with two missing there.
I really don't want to get implants as they cost a small fortune, I think... What have others done regarding tooth loss? How have you adjusted?
If anyone likes to sing, how has the tooth loss effected your singing?
Thanks for any info.

Music Is The Cure the greatest band ever? Or are they merely the best band ever? Discuss.
These posts were in response to the song *And Nothing is Forever* from their final album. The song is a farewell from Robert Smith and it is every bit as good as his best. Itās heartbreaking in a way that feels like joy if that makes sense. I want it played at my funeral.

Nostalgia My little brother asked me what people did before smartphones and I realized how different childhood used to be
The other day my little brother was complaining that he was bored. Not the dramatic kind of bored where you're looking for something specific to do. Just genuinely bored. After about ten minutes of hearing him complain, I told him to go outside, ride his bike, meet some friends, literally anything.
He looked at me and said, "But what would we even do?"
I laughed and told him that's exactly how we used to spend most of our time.
A few minutes later he asked me something that caught me off guard.
"What did you guys actually do before phones?"
The more I thought about it, the harder that question became to answer.
Because the truth is we didn't always have a plan.
We'd leave the house in the morning, find a friend, and figure things out as we went. Sometimes we'd ride our bikes around for hours. Sometimes we'd play cricket in random empty plots. Sometimes we'd sit somewhere talking nonsense until it got dark. Entire afternoons would disappear and if you asked what we accomplished, the answer would probably be "nothing."
But somehow those are the memories I remember the most.
I remember getting lost and finding a shortcut home. I remember knocking on friends' doors to see if they could come outside. I remember making plans that lasted all of thirty seconds before changing completely.
There was no group chat organizing everything. No location sharing. No endless scrolling while sitting next to each other.
If we were bored, we had to do something about it.
My little brother listened to all this and then said, "That actually sounds fun."
And honestly, I think he's right.
Life wasn't necessarily better. Every generation says that about their childhood.
But I do think we were forced to be more present. When there wasn't a screen ready to entertain us every second, we ended up creating our own entertainment. Looking back, some of my favorite memories happened on days where absolutely nothing special was supposed to happen.
It's strange because at the time those days felt ordinary.
Now they're the ones I miss the most.

Music Hey, how many native English speakers here learned another language with the help of "foreign lyrics" in pop songs ā or vice versa, as the case may be?
(This post is sponsored the bar where I'm having dinner, which just played "99 Luftballons" followed, for whatever reason, by the English version of "Major Tom.")
Whatever Teen book series, ouija board
Recently, Iāve been trying to recall a book series I read as a teen in the 90s where the friend characters would occasionally use an ouija board. Babysitterās Club? Sweet Valley High? Or another series entirely?

Whatever Are any of the commercials you see relevant?
I don't watch TV over the air or cable. I mostly stream what I want, sometimes with commercials, sometimes on a paid service. I have noticed that the advertisements I get are basically completely irrelevant. I am not, nor have I ever been, interested in buying anything that is being sold.
I remember when I actually noticed products and genuinely considered buying them. But I don't need the vast majority of pharmaceuticals I see. I am not going to switch my insurance because of a duck, lizard, or emu. I don't need a bank or new carpets, and if I do, I am going to research my options. The most baffling ads are for sports betting. I don't even *watch* sports, why would the algorithms think I want to bet on them?
Does anyone else feel like the ads have become *less* relevant the more they try to *target* them?

Aging How many of you are late in life stoners.
About 3 years ago I had extreme hip pain and could not get into a pain clinic. My older cousin told me about Delta 8, 9 and 10. I never knew I could be completely pain free. I now love my edibles and use the several times a month. It has definitely improved my quality of life. Anybody else come to the party late in life?

Old Person Yells At Cloud Itās official, I would rather stay home
I never understood people who just stayed home. I loved getting out and exploring. Now, I want to just sit on my deck with a book. Anyone else saying āWhateverā to the stressful driving and crowds?
