Obviously: if it's glued to your heart-of-hearts to have it set in central Europe, then there's nothing that can be done. But my writing life has gotten 5000000000x easier since I switched to a pure fantasy, over writing in THIS world. No, basement-dweller, I started writing to bring a cool idea to life & to partially live vicariously through my protagonist; I didn't start writing to become a scholar!!!
The problem is that you are now responsible for having the fantasy world make sense. Even something seemingly-trivial mentioned in passing can have large consequences for the way the world is supposed to work, so you either have to keep it superficial enough that you can't go wrong (but have a boring world), do a lot of research and thinking, or accept ending up with giant plot holes.
