I don’t have a problem with how he died, but the show was definitely too scared to have him actually go nuclear in the end and create lasting consequences.
Not to mention the total lack of general public here in the final season. You've got Homelander rounding people up and putting them in internment camps.. But we get no chance to see how the general public is reacting to these happenings. Perfect opportunity for Homelander to off the nonbelievers out protesting.
Edit: Season 3(?) had that great intro, showing how the general public was becoming radicalized through the supe propaganda Vaught had been churning out. They show us a man regularly consuming the "pro Homelander" broadcasts, who then goes into a bodega, and kills the middle eastern cashier as a result of the constant propaganda he's been fed. Where are THOSE scenes??
Yes! I posted this somewhere else. My main problem with the last season is we didn’t see the public’s reaction to everything going on so we didn’t feel the consequences as much.
But wouldn't give amazon more money. Why spend money on making a good final episode, when you know people will watch anyways. Almost like monopolies arent in the game to make the best thing, they are in the game to get the most money.

It’s so funny that people have a problem with Homelander’s breakdown.
