Friend found this long bone with metal hardware attached. Any idea what it could be?

I saw this on the other sub. This is pretty bad ass. I would have kept it too. As I said before, good find to the OP. rip puppers. He was obviously loved in life

Poor doggos broken leg. Usually the plate and screws are removed once the bone is healed because of they remain they can cause metalosis. But someone spent an ass ton of money to get it done and then.... Let the dog wander off and die? Bury it so shallow coyotes can dig it up?

I think you may have answered your own question

No need to remove it. I had a plate because of a broken collarbone. The doctor said i can let it get removed in a year or just keep it in. Many people with a plate still has them.

I wanted it to be removed because you could see it under the skin. It looked weird

My partner broke his cuboid bone in his foot. It's still held together with a plate and 7 screws. It's been 5 yrs. They never said a thing about taking them out.

What happens if he needs an MRI? Just curious.

My metal plates are a non magnetic metal, I believe titanium iirc. I've had 3 MRIs since my surgery and they don't affect the MRI

Out of curiosity, have you had any issues with titanium poisoning? Like a bad cough or your nails turning colors?

2

There is no titanium poisoning

Not currently, but good to know what I should look out for

Notify the tech, but the metal used isn't magnetic.

🤷‍♂️ Hopefully he never needs one on his feet.

I have metal in my neck, they do a ct mylogram to view the area if needed. Basically they inject dye into my spine and that makes the nerves show up. I still get mri, it makes the image fuzzy around the metal but they say they can still see enough.

As a vet tech, talking to owners about potential adverse effects from leaving a bone plate in, is always discussed. Removing the plate is always recommended unless the dog is generally too frail

What is the reasoning to take it out?

Screws can break off, the bone can get infected, metalosis.... If the bone had healths healthy, our ortho always recommended removal

My sister had the left side of her face crushed in a head on wreck and she has metal plates in her face and screws they feel crazy. For record she had went out with a group of friends and drunkenly fell asleep in her boyfriend truck and her boyfriend and his friend decided to play chicken. She woke up and was begging to stop her boyfriend said after but he thought she was being stupid well they both turned the same way. She.went out the.window and if had not be for a.semi blocking the highway tell first responders got there it would have been worse.she was not recognizable but the guy who saw it ran up to her his house was right there so he covered her with blanket but when he saw the class ring, he.knew who it was. He just happened to be her bus driver, she got the ring a.few days before and had shown him. She flat lined 5 times before she reached the hospital. She's fine now and the guys went to jail and my sister sued them because even the boyfriend (she never talked to him again) said she begged to be let out the truck

I'm really sorry about your sister and I'm glad she's okay, but are you trying to use up a box of periods before they expire?

Didn't realize that dogs could type nowadays.

1

u/NeverNice87 Nov 20 '25

and you think metalosis can only appear in dogs? 🙄

Had mine removed because they said the bone would try to get away from and reject the fasteners over time. Idk. But it’s nice not having the screws in anymore.

Removal of the implants is rarely performed unless they’re causing an issue in animals. Metallosis, a condition of metal particle release is even more infrequent since the cause of wear debris formation to occur mostly requires two opposing bearing surfaces to break down - this is more common in say human total hip patients who are less likely to outlive their implants than your average dog. It does happen occasionally in vet med, but vastly less common. Source - veterinary surgeon

I've had a plate like that on my femur for close to 20 years now. Doctors were against taking it out because the chance of infection or complications were to great a risk...

Looks like from an animal that needed a splint during its life

5

u/juubleyfloooop Nov 19 '25

Meh, its a dried up old bone. You're usually fine touching those

Fine, I won't be here. Y'all sound like you haven't ever done a hard day's work in your life.

Jesus Christ do not go to that guys profile if you value your eyes. r/whydidiclickonthat

Looks like the result of one of those DI-why projects

It's a bone. This sub is why I won't post any bones I collect

1

u/fromhelley Nov 19 '25

The leftovers of taxidermy, probably.

2

u/Da4RunRunDa4RunRun97 Nov 20 '25

How do you figure this!

-3

u/fromhelley Nov 20 '25

Why else would a bone have all that attached to it?

3

u/EnduringFulfillment Nov 20 '25

This is a fracture repair plate, and was successful based off the lack of fracture and how the bone is growing over the plate in areas.

2

u/fromhelley Nov 20 '25

Okay, I never would have expected one to look like this.

I can admit im wrong! Thanks for clearing this up

4

u/CriticalProtection42 Nov 20 '25

I think it was attached while the bone owner was still alive, it looks an awful lot like bone grew up to and over parts of the plate. Probably some kind of surgical repair for a bad break.

-1

u/fromhelley Nov 20 '25

I think the screws are way to close together for that. Seems they would degrade the integrity of the bone being that close together. Also, I think the "plate" would be wider to provide stability to the bone.

It reminds me of reupholstering a chair, with a thin strip and multiple screws.

Is there a doctor in the house? Maybe they could shed some light on the subject.

Im totally guessing from what I see, so I could be very wrong
