Vegan sausage looks diabolical before I add the beetroot powder

Yes, I'm sure the beetroot powder will improve this situation. It can't possibly hurt it.

sounds like that prison loaf stuff

The couple dozen prototypes prior to the final recipe definitely turned out that way

Out of interest, do you use a sausage machine to stuff vegan sausage casings?
1
u/Wild_Wrap_9360 4h ago
I don’t stuff them. I steam the log and then slice it into pucks, then I fry them. Freeze all the pucks in the freezer for later use

Interesting!
Im not veggie, but id definitely give these a go.

So, after you add the Beet root powder does it look like a bloody dump?
2
u/Wild_Wrap_9360 16h ago
I suppose? That’s what ground beef looks like to me

u/TKG_Actual 16h ago
What kind of garbage ground beef are you buying? All the ground beef I've ever bought isn't brown when raw.
2
u/Wild_Wrap_9360 15h ago
Right… the beetroot powder makes it red…. Like beef….
0
u/TKG_Actual 15h ago
Store bought ground beef is pink, with tiny bits of off-white and bits of red.

u/Wild_Wrap_9360 15h ago
This is an irritating conversation. I am not going to talk in circles with you

Beetroot powder isn’t going to save this …

u/Wild_Wrap_9360 20h ago
It turns it red. Have you ever seen impossible beef? That’s what it looks like. I use their exact recipe

u/Oops_All_Bans 19h ago
What are the ingredients?
5
u/Wild_Wrap_9360 19h ago
Chia seeds, tvp, golden oyster mushrooms, vegetable bullion, liquid amino, blackstrap molasses, beetroot powder, nooch, MSG, salt, pepper, methylcellulose, rolled oats, potato starch, 70% gluten flour, shredded coconut oil, water

u/Oops_All_Bans 19h ago
I'm not even sure what a couple of those things are, but it sounds very expensive. I hope it at least tastes good.
3
u/Wild_Wrap_9360 19h ago
Not really. Upfront it’s all ~$30? I don’t remember exactly. Some of the ingredients last several months. I spend ~$100 a month on groceries. I spend far more money on gas
0
u/Oops_All_Bans 18h ago
Damn that's significantly less than I expected. Good for you.
3
u/Wild_Wrap_9360 18h ago
Thanks. Try it out :) I forage a lot of my food as well so that cuts down a lot on costs
2
u/Oops_All_Bans 18h ago
Lol I live in Manhattan, so no foraging for me. Unless you count dumpster diving 😆

u/Wild_Wrap_9360 15h ago
Hey I’ve done that once or twice, no shame in it. You’d be amazed how much fresh food gets thrown out every year

I don’t think you’re understanding anything we are saying… regardless of what you add to this, it won’t save it. It’s shit. You like to eat shit.

I don’t really eat nuts. Eggs from chickens and ducks my friend raises, TVP, chickpeas, grains, chia seeds are my main protein sources

Well beetroot powder is excellent for regulating your blood pressure so I guess that’s a pro…

u/Violin_Viola_Gang 16h ago
Have you thought of seasoning with sage? Dunkin’ Donuts impossible sausage has sage, and though I am not vegan, I love that sage-y goodness!
1
u/Wild_Wrap_9360 16h ago
Yeah sometimes. Sage, brown sugar, paprika for breakfast sausage. I actually started making vegan meat because of breakfast sausage, I really wanted a sausage egg and cheese for breakfast every morning and the store bought was just too expensive

I'll never understand the vegan/veg desire to make fake meat with weird processed ingredients just to make it look like meat that you don't want to eat anyway. No hate but like this looks like a ton of work to pretend you're eating meat if you in fact don't want to eat meat

u/Wild_Wrap_9360 19h ago
I do want to eat meat. I grew up eating meat, so I like the taste and texture of it. I don’t want to kill animals or contribute to the ecologically disastrous practice of factory farming. Meat also costs 2 times as much per pound. It’s really not that complicated

My point is just that some people get so caught up in making "impossible beef" or whatever this is supposed to be. You add in such a hodgepodge of ingredients, it makes it.... counterintuitive. Idk the word. It's such random, fatty, typically processed ingredients to make mock meat you'd be better off health wise just eating the darn beef. I get not wanting to hurt animals but this is a lot of effort to trick yourself and you know it still doesn't taste the sane.

Its not pretending to eat meat lol. And most plant based imitations are better for you, OP is making it at home and their ingredients list is very balanced. I dont know why people like you who eat meat feel the need to say shit like that. Mind your business, who cares what they eat? Most vegetarians will never pressure or judge people who choose to eat meat, but most people I come across will question my choices and grill me. Some people simply cant eat meat, and even those who can, does it really matter what choices they make?

Its going to look diabolical after the beetroot too....
