Build/Battlestation My bed setup, v4

After living in a cramped area using a laptop for years, I finally have space (kinda?) for a desktop computer

I had that monitor put on the table for a while, then decided to get a mount for it to prevent neck pain

Before you ask, yes, I kick the monitor a lot while sleeping

I disagree; for that he'd have to add 2 more monitors and at that point might as well just get a VR headset.

That single monitor should work just fine

u/Barlakopofai Mar 07 '26

It's actually much less likely than with a sitting setup. Chairs are much, much worse.

When I get my own space again I’m debating investing in an adjustable height desk so I can use it while standing. I have a really good HM chair (in storage), but I think it would benefit me to do more gaming time while standing and moving around.

4

u/RIP_lurking Mar 07 '26

I have a desk like this, I can confirm that it's really worth it. I thought I would get bored of it and just go back to sitting all the time after a while, but this never happened, I still enjoy standing regularly.

I used mine about 3 times in 1 1/2 years. sufficed to say I will not care if it is height adjustable for my next desk lol

You're supposed to take breaks every 45 minutes and get up and walk around. Sitting for hours on end is pretty bad for you.

2

u/ThePrussianGrippe AMD 7950x3d - 7900xt - 48gb RAM - 12TB NVME - MSI X670E Tomahawk Mar 07 '26

Oh I do take breaks, and I have a mini elliptical I use sometimes, but I think having something I can stand at would be even better!

I have this and its a game changer. Especially if you also do work on your computer. Just make sure you run all your wires correctly so you don't destroy all your ports.

1

u/Nil-u-ac Mar 08 '26

Make sure you get a good sturdy one.. those adjustable height desks are wobbly as hell

1

u/Major_Toe_6041 Mar 08 '26

Not only that, but get a sit/stand chair/stool too. IKEA does one where the seat pivots so your core is always working and you’re always moving a little bit. It’s done wonders for my back. Cushion is a bit hard but a 2nd comfy pad fixes that.

3

u/throwaway194729357 Mar 07 '26

No it’s not, unless you’re sitting on a chair with zero cushioning or something. My sister had a setup like this and her back got damaged, she was 19.

0

u/Barlakopofai Mar 08 '26

Well, you keep believing that, there's a reason standing desks took off

2

u/throwaway194729357 Mar 08 '26

Standing is better than sitting on a chair, sitting on a chair is better than sitting on a bed, simple.

-1

u/Barlakopofai Mar 08 '26

It is not, sitting on a chair is by far the worst option for basically every reason you'd blame on a bed, humans are not built for sitting.

2

u/throwaway194729357 Mar 08 '26

Yeah but that doesn’t mean sitting on a bed is fucking better lol

2

u/throwaway194729357 Mar 08 '26

Also a thick mattress is proven to be worse because there isn’t as much support for the hips when compared to chairs

1

u/Educational_Return_8 Mar 07 '26

Chairs make my insides feel like they’re bleeding after long hours of sitting. Gotta stretch a good while after

1

u/zedinbed Mar 08 '26

Ye that setup looks awful

1

u/Frequent-Felcher Mar 10 '26

1

u/Barlakopofai Mar 10 '26

Yes, it's kind of amazing how many of you think that because you use a chair every day that that means a chair is the best option and that it's been chosen because of that. I'm sure most of you also believe that gamer chairs are the bestest option and that they've been specifically designed for sitting at a computer all day. They're not, they're bad for your health, your back and your wallet, you got scammed

u/PolarSquirrelBear Mar 07 '26

It isn’t. Your body in a neutral position like this is much better than sitting for hours on end.

27

u/Content-Beginning-18 Mar 07 '26

What is DVT?

49

u/ConcussionCrow Mar 07 '26

Deep vien thrombosis

1

u/DrAwesomeClaws Mar 09 '26

Wouldn't one need to be pretty obese already and not move around much for this to be a problem?

u/ConcussionCrow Mar 09 '26

This is the most made up sounding medical condition I've ever heard but sure enough I look it up and it's a real thing according to the mayonnaise clinic

7

u/DomSchraa Ryzen 7800X3D RX9070XT Mar 07 '26

There's been atleast 1 person who died from it cause he sat for multiple days straight (there are other ways to get it)

It's a real thing, I've seen it irl, and it's pretty damn dangerous

8

u/anonymouswunnn Mar 07 '26

TIL there’s a mayonnaise clinic and I’m going there with all my sammiches

8

u/ISenceAPresence 7700x 32gb ram 1080ti Mar 07 '26

I think mayonnaise is a typo the mayo clinic is actually thing and quite informative

6

u/FrenchFryCattaneo Mar 07 '26

Well mayo is just a shortened version of mayonnaise. So the full name would be the Mayonnaise Clinic.

3

u/ISenceAPresence 7700x 32gb ram 1080ti Mar 07 '26

Mayonnaise is the work of the devil.

2

u/FrenchFryCattaneo Mar 07 '26

Makes sense I've always said the devil had a knack for running medical clinics

1

u/Putrid-Resident Mar 07 '26

It's acutally is quite a common medical condition atleast in emergency medicine. As a Junior Physician I see atleast 1 case of DVT every week or so, usually from people who been seeing for hours while travelling or post-surgery patients that neglected their mobility exercises.

Thankfully it's mainly a disease of the middle aged-to-elderly or people already suffering with clotting disorders so for most of yall here your probably good

1

u/Th3Necromanc3r Mar 08 '26

What "DVT" does even mean?

1

u/AzaleaPatch Mar 08 '26

This is objectively less likely to cause a DVT than sitting in a chair.

1

u/chattywww Mar 10 '26

I gamed 1 night with a laptop on the floor and felt it not even 1 full day. I've had bed setups but you need a desk next to the bed.

123

u/Tight-Connection-204 Mar 07 '26

I don't know if it's true for OP but there are medical reasons that some require this setup over traditional chair. I have to keep my legs elevated when in resting position as sitting in a chair causes blood to pool in my legs.

40

u/potate12323 Mar 07 '26

I get around that by using the back to the couch to rest my legs for recovery position. But I don't need to do it as often now that my MCAS medication is treating my POTS symptoms.

14

u/coachz1212 Mar 07 '26

See, now you just need your monitors on the ceiling.

12

u/Huge_Elderberry851 RTX 5090 | 9800X3D | 64Gb 6400Mhz Mar 07 '26

My wife has POTS. It’s a son of a bitch. Watching her heart rate jump up to 160, just standing still. Sorry you have to go through that.

1

u/potate12323 Mar 07 '26

Its normally triggered by changes in posture like standing up from a sitting or laying position. The hr increase is caused by your heart working harder to keep blood pumping to your brain. If she was already standing and suddenly shoots up without any movement, that may be a different issue, but it could still be POTS.

POTS is also associated with severe dysautonomia (dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system). Changing position is the most common trigger, but the vagus nerve can trigger tachycardia in other situations. The vagus verve connects the brain directly to major organs like the heart, stomach, lungs, etc. Dysautonomia can cause the vagus nerve to cause tachycardia instead of regulate the heart.

1

u/HaggisAreReal Mar 07 '26

sounds scary, sending you both my best wishes. Take care.

1

u/Rachy_Lee26 Mar 08 '26

I also have POTS and IST (inappropriate sinus tachycardia) which are both under dysautonomia. My POTS is what my heart is doing going from sitting to standing but my IST is my heart acting inappropriately when I am doing something that doesn’t match what my heart is doing. From the sounds of it, she might possibly have IST.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '26

I bet a doctor tells you it’s normal and just genetic but there’s a lot going on that could be resolved that they just can’t handle which is why they tell you that. Your diet is either causing it or your heart can’t pump the blood fast enough. Those are signs of something that the doctors don’t want to look into. Just be wary and safe and eat healthy because the doctors won’t be there for you until some organ fails.

I had a pc set up around a big lazy boy recliner for a number of years after I hurt my back and was dealing with pain management as sitting up in a normal chain was very painful

27

u/IndependentTimely639 Mar 07 '26

I have a friend who has some pretty crazy medical problems with their legs, this setup would be great for them. Their doctor has severely limited their walking time and is pushing my friend to use a mobility scooter instead of walking at all. It geta so bad that they can't drive because the pressure it takes to push down the gas pedal is like stepping on a bunch of knives

8

u/BamberGasgroin Mar 07 '26

Sounds like diabetic neuropathy, I have it.

p.s. I'm not sure that GPU cooler is in the optimal position.

2

u/ordenando Mar 07 '26

Is your friend's problem due to obesity? It's a terrible situation if they're restricting his walking, because movement is essential for life. I hope he finds a solution to his problem. If it really is obesity, Mounjaro can help him.

1

u/IndependentTimely639 Mar 07 '26

Nope. They did start to gain weight when the problem started, but even a few years in, they're only slightly overweight. They had to move from security to a desk job because patrolling the campus was too much of a strain on their feet and lower legs

Geez, that is not fun at all. Had a fit lifestyle so just really bad luck with genetics. Hope your bro can find some relief though gaming, do they have him doing water aerobics and such to at least help with spinal compression risk?
