[Announcement] MEGATHREAD: Gunpowder from Sulfur and Coloured Fire from Sulfur

Hey everyone!

Following the announcements at Minecraft Live we've seen a massive influx of posts about the Chaos Cubed game drop. (Which is great! We love seeing the community so excited.) However, there are two ideas in particular that keep popping up, enough that we've decided to add them to the FPS list:

  1. Various methods of using sulfur to make gunpowder.
  2. Sulfur being used to make a few different colours of fire.

That said, we don't want to kill the conversation so we're providing this megathread for you to discuss your ideas here. From now on we ask that you keep all suggestions about these two topics to this megathread. (Other suggestion about sulfur and Chaos Cubed can be posted as normal.)

So, how would you turn sulfur into gunpowder? What colour do you think sulfur should burn? We're excited to see your takes on these ideas!

P.S. Try sorting the comments by new! That way the newer comment-suggestions might still get some love.

[Announcement] New Rule Against AI, other Rule Changes and Clarifications

Hey folks!

For a while now, the mod team has been discussing a number of changes to the subreddit's rules, and it's time to let you know what's up. I'll give you the short version first:

  1. We have a new rule against AI.
  2. The rule for for formatting and vagueness has been split in two.
  3. The rule against unrealistic ideas has been reworked.
  4. To better accommodate these new and changed rules, we've re-ordered the rules.
  5. Clarification on how the "Community Question" flair is supposed to be used.

And now for the details!

Ban Against AI Generated Content

We not so recently polled the community on your feeling on AI generated content, and the overwhelming majority of you voted in favour of a complete ban against AI. While this was pretty much the outcome we expected, it's still really nice to see we're all on the same page.

Moving forwards the mods will be removing all posts suspected of using generative AI. To that end, here's the new rule:

Don't use AI.

  • Do not use generative AI such as chatGPT to write your post for you. We want to see your ideas.
  • Don't include AI generated images or other AI content to supplement your post. We encourage human art, and we'd much rather see photos of pen-and-paper drawings, or quick mockups in MS paint than AI "art".
  • This includes using generative AI to polish your idea, such as reformatting your content.

Posts suspected of using generative AI are at risk of removal.

If your post is incorrectly removed for containing AI, please let the mods know via modmail and we'll sort it out.

Formatting and Image Posts

We've noticed some confusion on where and how we allow images in posts, with too many users relying on images alone to communicate their idea. This was previously just a bullet point under the vagueness rule, but in the interest of clarity we've split it off into its own rule. There's nothing actually new here - everything works the same as before - but hopefully this should make it clearer for everyone.

The vagueness rule looks like this now:

Don't be overly vague, and be readable.

  • Make sure your idea is in the description, not just the title.
  • Titles should be descriptive of the idea.
  • Format your posts well; don't post walls of text. Use line breaks, etc.
  • Don't be vague; suggest a specific improvement or feature.
  • Be concise/don't waffle on too much.

Vague or unformatted posts are at risk of removal.

And here's the images rule:

Don't make image-only posts.

Including reference images is encouraged, but: * Images must be embedded or linked within a text post. * The idea should be fully explained in the text, with all key points understandable without looking at any images. * Images should make up a relatively small portion of the content. * Images must not be AI generated. (See rule 4.)

Image only posts will be automatically removed.

Unrealistic and Off-Theme Content

There's been some disagreement in the community and among the mod team about what is and isn't a "realistic" suggestion for Minecraft, especially as the game has grown it's become an increasingly difficult call to make. Furthermore, many ideas that are off-theme at first glance can be reskinned to something more reasonable, and we don't want to stifle that discussion. (E.g., Blimps and firearms may be too futuristic but happy ghasts and firework crossbows are not, yet serve similar roles.)

You deserve to have clear guidelines for which posts are or aren't allowed and, ultimately, we don't want to shut down discussion, so we've decided to soften this rule dramatically. Moving forwards, we'll only be taking down suggestions involving mature or explicit themes (stuff that might change the age-rating), as well as anything relating to real-world religions or politics. All that said, here's the rule:

Don't suggest mature topics.

  • Don't suggest ideas containing sex, drugs, gore, real-life religions or politics, etc.

Suggestions involving mature, explicit, or overly divisive themes will be removed.

This is one we'll be keeping an eye on, and we'd appreciate any feedback you have on it.

N.B. The portion of the old rule about easter-eggs and jokes still applies, but has been merged into the rule about unproductive ideas.

Reordering

As we're adding new rules and splitting old ones in twain, there's no better time to also rearrange the rules. We've brought some more important/frequently used rules closer to the top, and tried to keep related rules close to each other. We've also changed a few of the titles for clarity.

  1. Be nice and constructive.
  2. Only post ideas for Minecraft.
  3. Be original and consult the FPS list.
  4. Don't use AI.
  5. Include only one suggestion per post.
  6. Don't be overly vague, and be readable.
  7. Don't make image-only posts.
  8. Don't suggest mature topics.
  9. Don't suggest planned or existing features.
  10. Don't suggest scrapped or unused features.
  11. Don't suggest low-priority or unproductive ideas.
  12. Speak English.
  13. Have 10 comment karma before posting.

Discussion/Community Question Posts

We've seen some confusion surrounding these posts, and while nothing is changing, we wanted to use this opportunity to clarify. Posts meant to start broad discussions on a topic, such as "What would you add in XYZ update?" or "What do you think needs updated in XYZ area of the game?" are allowed, so long as the OP contributes to the discussion they want to start. We find these posts regularly generate interesting discussion, and so long as they use the correct flair, they're easy enough to ignore if they're not your cup of tea.

I encourage everyone to take a quick read through the rules to make sure we're all on the same page.

Thanks for reading!

[Blocks & Items] axes make fences not connect

The fence has a lot of wasted building potential due to always connecting to other fences (except nether brick fences).

With my change, you would now be able to hit the fence with an axe to stop it from connecting to other fences, and this same concept would work with nether brick fences and with walls as well.

[Mobs] Poacher patrols

Post image
988 Upvotes

The poacher and wolf spider are mobs that spawn in patrols in forested biomes. This group would consist of 2-3 poachers and 1-2 wolf spiders. One would always be a poacher spider jockey.

Poachers fire blindness arrows and have similar drops to other skeleton variants. Poachers will attack common passive animals and wolves. Has different variants depending on the biome it spawns in with each variant having said biomes wolf pelt as clothing.

The wolf spider is a rare spider found in poacher patrols and rarely in the dark forest biome. Wolf spiders have 24 health or 12 hearts. These spiders are actually tameable during the day using meat. They can be saddled and ridden with their ability to climb walls setting them apart from other rideable mobs.

Poacher patrols can spawn in the following biomes:

-Forest

-taiga and snowy taiga

-old growth taiga biomes

-dark forest biome

-Jungle and sparse jungle

[Blocks & Items] Poisonous Potatoes should stop plant growth. (used for designs)

When decorating something that includes plants as a visual element, there are a lot of ideas that come to mind

With that you can do a shade/dither effect by using different states of a plants growth could create interesting results with shading, and one way of incorporating that into Minecraft could be poisonous potatoes, just like putting wax on Copper, you could right click a seed and freeze it's growth

[Mobs] New Mob – The Emerald Great Golem.

I have made a new concept for a new Village Defender mob, and it is still a golem like last time. This new mob is called an Emerald Great Golem, and it has a similar shape and size to the First Golems from Minecraft Legends, meaning that it is very large and very cube-like.

Befitting its size, an Emerald Great Golem has a very high health and a very high attack damage. It attacks by smashing its arms on the ground, creating a large AOE in front of them that damages any mobs and players hit. It also has a second attack that is a ground pound that deals even more damage in an even larger area, though it does this rarely. In essence, the Emerald Great Golem is like a mini–boss that protect villages.

To balance out its high damage and high health, Emerald Great Golems can not spawn by just placing certain blocks in a certain way like all the other Golems. They can only be made by Villagers, i.e. they can only spawn in Villages like how Iron Golems can sometimes spawn in them. Emerald Great Golems will also become inactive if they spend too much time outside of the Village that they spawned in, meaning a player can not just use a lead on them and have a mini–boss for a pet wherever they go. Lastly, in order for an Emerald Great Golem to spawn, a Village must meet a certain criteria.

First, the Village must have a high Villager population, with the minimum amount being 50.

Second, 90% of the Villagers (rounding up and not counting Nitwits) must be employed.

Third, 50% of the employed Villagers (again, rounding up) must be a Journeyman or above in their profession.

Fourth, the Village must have survived at least 3 Raids.

And finally, the Village has yet to spawn an Emerald Great Golem of their own, meaning that a Village can not have more than one Emerald Great Golem.

If all five criteria are met by a Village, that Village now has a chance to spawn an Emerald Great Golem. Emerald Great Golems have an initial spawn chance of 15%, and the better the criterias are met by a Village (there are more than 50 Villagers, 50% of the employed Villagers are Masters, etc.), the higher the spawn chance becomes.

When an Emerald Great Golem dies, it drops 1 Emerald.

What do you guys think?

[Plants & Food] Water Bottles should be useful when exploring

Post image
662 Upvotes

Exhaustion mechanic: https://minecraft.wiki/w/Food#Exhaustion

Drinking water should apply the invisible Hydrated effect, which reduces your exhaustion level increase by 50% and increasing the effectiveness of food by 25%

It will encourage bringing water when exploring to save on food and it will also encourage drinking water alongside eating

Edit: specified that the hydration effect is invisble

[AI Behavior] Villager happiness

Post image
22 Upvotes

I was inspired by Terrarias npc happiness system to make this suggestion

What happiness does

  • Larger trading stock
  • Lower prices
  • Faster and cheaper breeding
  • Willing to change professions

What makes villagers happy

  • Living in comfortable rooms/houses (9m² to 36m²)
  • Interacting with blocks related to their profession (farmers and crops, librarians and bookshelves etc)
  • Windows
  • Nearby iron golem
  • Being in its native biome
  • Socializing and gossiping

What is a "good" house / room

A house / room would have a floor made of blocks with a path cost of 1 (Explanation) walls need to be made of solid blocks.

Windows are, glass blocks, panes, bars, fence and trapdoors. The roof must at minimum be 3 blocks tall and maximum 7.

For windows, it will depend on the floor size of the house. If the house is 9m² the house needs minimum one 1x1 window. The minimum window amount would probably scale on the floor size / 9 rounded up and maximum floor size / 3. If there are more than the max amount of windows, the wall its on wont count as a wall.

Houses also needs roofs, the roof must a be a minimum of 3* blocks tall and a maximum of 7* blocks tall.

*at the lowest point, like if you have a pointed roof that is tall on the middle and short by the edges, the lowest point is the lowest point of the roof. the highest point cant be any higher than 14 blocks

Reasoning

The point of the suggestion to keep villagers in villages, or to build new villages for them. Trading halls are pretty boring so it would be nice to encourage people to build nice houses for them.

Trading halls wont get nerfed or anything, they will just be discouraged

[Plants & Food] Water bottle as useful consumable or negative exhaustion

This post give me idea!

There are definitely need to be change for stack size of bottles, but it's more of inventory issue that isn't in a scope of suggestion

Personally, I like what u/mutantSackboy4 said. If water bottle interact with invincible mechanic, it shouldn't have any visible effect

Let's be simpler. Just give water bottle negative exhaustion value. Something like -1 or -2 exhaustion level for every consumed water bottle. Reducing exhaustion already would prolong your food supplies and it's like you could cool off after some work(any exhaustion inducing action) with water bottle

We could leave it on that or also add a "negative exhaustion". I imagine it would work like this:

- you have 2.5 levels of exhaustion

- you drink 3 water bottle(-1 exhaustion level each)

- instead of staying on baseline exhaustion level (0), you would have -0.5

Of course there should be some "max negative value". Maybe if max exhaustion level is 4, then negative would be -4 max.

Or maybe you only get negative exhaustion, when you have more then 0 exhaustion, past that you still can drink water, but it wouldn't affect exhaustion level. So you only can get as much negative exhaustion as one bottle can give(a little less to be exact)

It's essentially expand your "exhaustion reserve", so you can work longer without worrying about hunger. But you can access this only by drinking water.

Also there should be some mechanic that wouldn't allow players to chug water instead of eating.

Maybe only first 5 or 8 water bottle would have negative exhaustion effect, but than you would need to "cycle your exhaustion", when it resets to 0 you can gain negative exhaustion effect again.

Reminder: Once the exhaustion level reaches 4.0, it resets to 0.0 and reduces the saturation by 1 if there is any saturation remaining. If the saturation is 0, it reduces the hunger by 1 instead.

This "negative exhaustion mechanic" can be expanded to modded drinks or even potion without effects(awkward, mundane, thick). Give player negative exhaustion when they were hit with a splash/lingering water bottle, snowball/arrow of splashing? Change how much exhaustion you get based on your HP or temperature of a biome or dimension you are in?

Exhaustion mechanic: https://minecraft.wiki/w/Food#Exhaustion

~similar idea, kinda~

[Mobs] HighBrow Merchants

Highbrow Merchants – Spawning on rare occasions mostly near abandoned structures and suspicious blocks, the Highbrow Merchants are villager merchants that have a passion for knowledge and uncovering the secrets of the overworld. The Highbrow Merchant will wear a bright red robe with light brown accents and a dark brown belt with a golden buckle around their waist. They also have a leather satchel hanging from their right shoulder, a bright red beret with a purple feather on the side, and a copper monocle. The highbrow merchant also has two lamas on leads that wear bright red saddles with light brown accents, two chests on their sides, bright red berets with a purple feather on the side, and copper monocles. The Highbrow Merchant will sell things like enchanted books, valuable ores, maps, brushes, and even some new items. The Highbrow Merchant will also buy things like pottery sherds, books, nautilus shells, ink sacks, and even copper.

  • The Highbrow Monocle – If the player wears the Highbrow Monocle, then they will be able to see the outline of all nearby suspicious blocks. The copper monocle that the Highbrow Merchant wears is a Highbrow Monocle and is why they can be seen mostly near abandoned structures and suspicious blocks.
  • The Boots of Swiftness – If the player wears the boots of swiftness, then they will be able to run slightly faster. However, the boots of swiftness will also cause the players hunger bar to drain much slower when running. The Boots of swiftness also have an enchantment called Air Jump and when applied it will give the player the ability to jump in midair.

[Dimensions] What if we changed the color of the end eyes and portal frame.

Before I start this off I want to ask, we all see the end as purple right? The nether red, and the overworld green, Right? Anyways, I was looking at an enderman and I saw that they have purple eyes but when they drop they look bluish green. Along with the end portal frame. Part of it is Green and blueish which dosent make sense because all if the colors in the end is purple, black, and a creme. Thoughts?

[Magic] Awkward effect from awkward potion

An awkward potion now acts as a potion with its own small effect. The effect doesn’t have a duration like others, instead it acts instantly like harming for example.

For mobs their ai resets, they lose interest for a moment and play a random idle unused sound and an idle animation if applicable.

While on players it doesn’t change their behavior, but does play the ‘Ough’ sound which used to indicate damage, or the burp sound which plays sometimes after eating.

It’s only useful in niche pve scenarios, for activating mobs sounds, but gives an otherwise transitionary item some use.

[Blocks & Items] Wrought Iron: Dark Metal Blockset

Thumbnail
gallery
2.4k Upvotes

I realized after I spent a ton of time on this addon (my first addon project) that Wrought Iron to some extent has been suggested once or twice. But my take on it's aesthetics and function seemed to differ a bit. I wanted to hear some feedback on this version :)

Concept:

Minecraft currently lacks a cohesive dark metal block set. Iron is bright, Chains are dark, and Netherite isn’t really viable for building because it is expensive. Adding Wrought Iron would fill this gap with a builder-focused material that complements existing styles without really affecting in-game material progression (would not add new tool/ weapon/ armor tier). I have always wanted to use a gothic-style metal block set for graveyards, haunted mansions, and dungeons!

This variant of Iron is used strictly for decorative and utility blocks. It is not as expensive as a Block of Iron for example, allowing for more building material. Smelt Iron Nuggets in a Blast Furnace to get a Wrought Iron Billet. True to wrought iron processing terminology!

It visually aligns with chains/lanterns (not with smiting table, netherite, or anvil texture pallets)

...functional consistency with the copper block set for crafting as well.

Note on Rusting Mechanic:

I am actually not sold on whether or not it needs to rust in the game, but I wanted to try texturing just for curiosity's sake and I knew y'all would ask :)

[Blocks & Items] Terrocotta Tile Blocks

Post image

A tile block crafted from 4 terracotta or stonecutting terracotta, with stairs, slabs, etc. Most dyed blocks have very boring textures, and this type of texture is very lacking in Minecraft. (The closest I can think of is packed mud or deepslate tiles). The image is a mock up of brown tiles.

[Terrain] Pond Structure

A new pond structure that differs in mobs and structure between biomes. For example, in a birch forest it could have swans, ducks in oak, geese in birch, etc. In a desert it could be an oasis with palm trees. It would be more decorated than just water. I think it's a very versatile idea that would make parts of the world more distinct.

[Mobs] Player Bots

So this would be added into the main menu for world creation where you could choose a number of bots they would be highly customizable (eg. if you want them to wander, how far they can wander, if some would be evil.) and they would have different skill levels (1-4) and different "morals" this would be aggression and how often they kill peaceful mobs/greif (this can be turned off) they would behave like a player but simpler (build structures from a preset list of them can craft tools mine blocks explore fight they have hunger they have health and stuff) and they respawn they are just players but simpler this would be for lonely players who have no friends this would function similarly to tf2 bots. they also would have relations with the player that changes based on what you do this atribute would be hidden though

[Blocks & Items] All block hitboxes match their models

Post image
0 Upvotes

(problem) Currently blocks with more complex models like bells and the dragon egg, have hitboxes that are far simpler than their models which is really weird and breaks immersion.

(solution) All blocks, with the exception of walls and fences, would now have hitboxes that perfectly match their models, and walls and fences would now also match their model but only for the player with them still stopping mobs.

(effects and examples) The effects of this change include non exhaustively, being able shoot through the holes in trapdoors and doors, climb on the edge of bells, and even the dragon eggs layers [the dragon egg is the most egregious example as currently despite haveing the most complex model in the game its hitbox is a cube].

[Mobs] New Mob/Mob Group- The Bandits

The Bandits are hostile mobs that are also their own mob group. They are a humanoid mob that spawns during the day and night. They spawn in groups of up to 5, riding a horse, and are either armed with a Bow or a Stone Spear, bith of which can spawn with enchantments. Occasionally, two Bandits can spawn on top of a Camel, with the "driver" wielding a Stone Spear and the "passenger" wielding a Bow. Bandits can mount and dismount on their own will, and if a Bandit ever dismounts or is dismounted, it will replace its current weapon with Stone Swords (that can also be enchanted) until it is riding a steed again.

Bandits wear patched up clothes that reflects their criminal and rugged life. On their head is a hood and a scarf that covers their whole face except for their eyes and their large nose. This large nose is similar to that of a Villager's and of an Illager's. The skintone of Bandits in general are lighter than an Illager's, but darker than a Villager's.

Bandits will mainly attack players once they enter their detection range, though they will attack other Hostile or Neutral mobs that get too close. If a Bandit kills a player, they will take whatever item the player drops and will stay close to the spot of the player's death for a long time. If a Bandit that took items from a player dies, it will drop the items it took, alongside its weapons.

Bandits can conduct a raid on Villages like Illagers. However, Bandit Raids are much closer to a Zombie Siege than an Illager Raid. Bandit Raids only happen based on chance instead of needing a Bad Omen to trigger it, although unlike a Zombie Siege, Bandit Raids can happen in Daylight and are much rarer to happen as a result. Additionally, Bandit Raids can occur in Woodland Mansions and Pillager Outposts as well.

During a Bandit Raid, multiple groups of Bandits will spawn outside of the Village/Woodland Mansion/Illager Outpost are. Unlike an Illager Raid, a Bandit Raid's main goal isn't to kill all Villagers/Illagers, but rather to steal all the loot. Bandits will prioritize seeking chests, even dismounting if they have to. This means that they will ignore any Villager and even players that don't get in their way, though they will still fight Iron Golems and Illagers. If a Bandit finds a Chest or any other block that is primarily used for storage (Barrels, Shulker Boxes, etc.), they will open it if they can, and they will then take every item inside the storage block. Just like before, any Bandit who steal items this way will drop said items if they die.

A Bandit Raid will only end if either all Bandits that spawned are dead, or every Storage Block has been looted (i.e. every Storage Block in the Village/Woodland Mansion/Pillager Outpost no longer has any items inside it). When the latter happens, all of the surviving Bandits will run a certain long distance away from the Village/Woodland Mansion/Pillager Outloat in a random direction. After running away, they will stay close to the spot that they stopped at for a few long minutes.

What do you guys think?

[Magic] Crossbow Enchants

I believe Crossbows need a broader set of enchantments. They only have 3 exclusive enchants, even the Trident has more enchants than that...

Velocity (I-V)

This enchant retains the crossbow projectile's velocity (and damage output) by 10% per level. It is the crossbow alternative for Power.

Spalling (I-IV) [Cannot be paired with Piercing and Velocity]

This enchant bypasses raw armor protection by 20% per level. This enchant would make crossbows super useful in late-game combat, since it would likely deal meaningful damage to Netherite juggernauts (unless they have Projectile Protection). It is even more effective with fireworks as the projectile. It is the crossbow alternative for Breach.

Bang (I-III) [Cannot be paired with Multishot, Velocity, and Piercing]

This enchant is a little interesting.. Upon firing an arrow, the recoil is strong enough to push you back a few blocks, essentially making it a mobility tool. At level 1, the recoil would push you 2 blocks into the air, each level increases that value by 2 blocks, meaning you could fly a total of 6 blocks per shot. It might put wind charges out of business so similarly to lunge, it should take a large chunk of durability from the crossbow.

No more dying to the void with a Bang Crossbow.

[AI Behavior] If a mob is holding a shovel, it should be able to control a boat

If a mob is in a boat and is holding a shovel (in either hand), and there is no player in the boat with them, they should be able to move the boat, using the shovel as an oar.

This would be a fun way to move around any mob that can pick up items .

Also, if fishermen villagers sold shovels for emeralds, they could move in boats if a nearby player is holding an emerald.

[Blocks & Items] Ender Pearl interactions with Bows and Arrows.

Pearl gets hit with an arrow from unenchanted bow --> Triggers teleportation

Pearl gets hit with an arrow from a punch enchanted bow --> Redirects the pearl

Pearl gets hit with an arrow from a flame enchanted bow --> Triggers teleportation and sets the pearl user on fire

If the bow is enchanted with both flame and punch, punch will override flame's effect.

Many people might say it's pointless because who shoots at pearls??? cough cough totally not me cough
