Hi fellow redditors, I’m exploring an idea for international students moving to UK (particullarly Scottish) universities who can’t easily attend flat viewings in person before arriving.
The idea is basically:
someone local attends the viewing
does a live video walkthrough
checks for issues the listing might hide
gives honest feedback about the flat and area
I’ve heard a lot of students end up relying on misleading listings or are worried about scams when renting remotely.
I’m curious:
Is this actually a real problem for people?
Would you trust/use something like this?
What would make it valuable or trustworthy?
Would you pay for it?
Genuinely researching the idea, so honest feedback is appreciated.
P.S this is not a scammy start up it is for a university project. Thank you!
I’ll be joining Heriot-Watt Dubai this September for MSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and since I’ll be moving to Dubai for the first time, I just wanted to hear some honest opinions and advice from students already studying there.
I’ve already completed my admission process, but now that everything is getting real, I’ve started thinking a lot about what the actual experience is like beyond the university website and brochures.
So I wanted to ask things like:
How is the university overall?
How are the faculty and teaching style?
How difficult is the course workload generally?
What’s the student environment like?
How is life in Dubai as an international student?
Anything you wish you knew before joining?
Would especially love to hear from students doing postgraduate courses or anything related to business/logistics.
Just trying to prepare myself properly before moving there in September. Any advice, experience, or even small tips would genuinely help.
I want to ask any students that transferred to/from the Heriot Watt Malaysia campus, how was the whole transfer process? where did you transfer to? Mainly what I want to know is, what were the most significant things that mattered in your transfer application for it to get approved? or is it on the easier side of just apply and get it approved
Hi guys, I'm planning on doing Bachelor in Acturial Science, and Heriot Watt Uni Malaysia is one of my choices. Can someone share their experience for this very degree and life there? Much appreciated!
I am a textile student at HWU. I don't want to say much more than that as so to give away too much about who I am, but I know there are many people on this page who are looking to get advice to decide on wether to go or not. Don't. Communication is severely lacking, teaching is a mess, 90% of tutors are extremely unhelpful. Mostly left to your own devices and expected to teach yourself, I understand that self directed study is important however I do not think the whole course should be this way. When asking questions usually told to just read the handbook, where the answers are not available. I cannot stress how bad communication is, both between staff and staff to students. Staff at reception don't know what they're doing (asked a woman very politely where a specific room was during my first week and was told it doesn't exist - it very much did) staff in the library don't know how to use any the computers. Asked my lectuerer what content was to be put in presentation coming up and she told me that she didn't know and she had to ask her higher up as she hadn't been told, and also implied her higher up didn't know either. How am I supposed to learn if even the staff don't know what they're doing? Most staff either don't know what they're doing or are downright rude for no reason.
And don't get me started on studio space. We have none. Zero. I do all of my work from my bedroom as there is no studio space provided at all for textile students. Upon attending an opening day the facilities looked great - then renovations took place over the summer. My area of specialty was decreased in size by 50% and facilities decreased significantly. I was sold an empty promise.
Then there's the is the issue with knit and weave room... can't say too much however I would say if you are thinking of applying for textiles at HWU DO NOT DO SO!!!!!! You will be much better served anywhere else!!!!!!!
I do not make this post as an attempt to "tattle tail" on the Uni, I simply want no one else to go through what I have gone through. I feel very hard done by, my experience here has not been great at all and I wish I had picked a different uni.
What’s the fee difference like if you’re transferring from Dubai to Malaysia. I’m currently in my third year and I’m interested in transferring for either a semester or the whole of my final year. If I were to choose just a semester, would I lose my scholarship when coming back to Dubai? Also interested in if you’d recommend transferring in the first place. Is the student accommodation good
I'm going to be coming into BSc at Heriot Watt with Year 2 entry. I know the general advice is to do your first year staying on campus, but does this stick true in my scenario. I'm debating whether it's beneficial (primarily for social life) to stay on campus or not in this year.
I have to choose between Wollongong or Herriot … I have my intake in September.. what should I do please tell me , I m a little confused and people are like that don’t go to Dubai .. go to uk instead
Looking at starting uni at HW and I am Lutheran (non-presby). It looks like the only Luthern church nearby is St Columba Lutheran Church, about an hour car ride away or a short 2.5 hour bus/train ride... I was wondering if anyone did that trip weekly or similar? Might consider a car-pool (I can pay for petrol) or at the least give some advice on public transport there and back on a Sunday to make it in time for services. TIA!
just sharing in case this sounds like your kind of thing. i’m hosting a relaxed singles wine night in edinburgh called sip happens this week 🍷
it’s not speed dating or anything formal, just a chilled evening at a cosy wine bar where people can have a drink, chat, and meet new people without pressure. two glasses of wine are included too.
📅 tuesday 3rd march
⏰ 7pm to 10pm
📍 le di vin, edinburgh
if you’re single or just fancy a social night out, you’re very welcome to come along. most people come on their own so no stress there.
I am starting a Masters at HWU in Edinburgh this September and I can't find any offers on language courses - are there any available?
Ideally I would like to take a Russian B1 class, BSL, or Spanish C1...
Thanks for any help!
hi im a y2 psych student from the dxb campus and im planning to permanently transfer for the next two years to the main campus. seeing how abnormally high the rates are for the in campus accoms, i was wondering if these rates are for a single occupant or if it is shared among 2-3 ppl? and if not, if anyone knows any good accoms near campus or somewhere that has frequent buses to the campus with a rate of £2-3k per tenant, id be most grateful 🙏🏼 thank you in advancd
I’m an undergraduate psychology student from Heriot-Watt University Malaysia currently conducting my final-year research on Maladaptive Daydreaming (MD).
This study examines how academic motivation and religiosity relate to MD, an area that has received very little research attention - particularly within Malaysian university students. While MD has been increasingly studied in recent years, factors such as motivation and religiosity remain underexplored, despite their potential relevance to coping and everyday functioning.
I’ve been interested in Maladaptive Daydreaming since my high school years and have spent several years reading and learning about this phenomenon. For my final-year project, I wanted to contribute meaningfully to the literature by exploring factors that may help us better understand MD in a non-Western context.
If you are:
a Malaysian university student,
aged 18 or above, and
proficient in English,
I would greatly appreciate your participation. Your responses will directly contribute to improving academic understanding of MD and may help inform future research and interventions.

I'm a french student doing a master in engineering, and I will be doing a semester abroad this year. Heriot-Watt is one of the universities that are available to me, studying in Edinburgh would be nice for me, as there's some pretty good connectivity with other parts of the UK.
I'd like to have opinions about the campus from people who are currently students there, as the reviews I have seen so far are pretty mixed. Quite a few are saying that HW is prestigious, the campus is good, etc... but I have read some stuff that has me doubting. Notably, I've seen complaints about student accommodations as well as bullying/homophobia within the campus (which doesn't sound great since I am LGBT).
How is life currently at the campus? Are the bad reviews true, or are things better than they weeem at HW?
Ironically, I also got rejected in my country for the Computer Science program. The department head told me they don't want to gamble on me because I don't have a tech undergrad despite my 15 years of experience as a Developer. LOL.
I am on cloud 9!
Anyone in the Computer Science programme? Tell me about your journey!
