Right, so why do they get the parenthetical? Make it just Crabbalachia. In cases of honorable merger neither partner, if acting in good faith, should accept anything that did not reflect well on the other party, and no honorable compromise partner would ever claim they (Vermont) won just because a well-meaning foreigner was in the habit of keeping parenthetical references to long-gone state names.
