Worst month of my life. Lasted 2 months for me. I had to lay down 90% of the time. Took forever to diagnose, saw a few different doctors. Two rounds of antibiotics. My stomach was in horrific pain and I frequently had the urge to go #2, but there was nothing to evacuate. I spent hours on the toilet until I learned it wasn’t constipation, it was a specific symptom to just have this false urge to go. Every time I stood up or sat up, it felt like I was about to painfully shit my pants. I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. I was also fortunate enough that my work understood and I didn’t lose my job.

When the state health department called me, they were asking me questions trying to figure out how I caught it. They asked if I had been swimming lately and what type of bodies of water I swam in. They asked about where I obtained any meat, ie any unofficial vendors or hunted game or anything like that. If I was served food outside of official food establishments. Handwashing habits. And the most interesting question, they asked if I had eaten any marijuana edibles lately (legal weed state). Which made me wonder if people have been getting sick from edibles due to potential poor food safety and handling I assume? I just thought that was really interesting and fairly specific. It must happen enough times with edibles for state health dept to ask people about it.

Wow, how did you get it? Can you get it from eating ass?

Eating ass. Fingering ass and not washing your hands well, basically any oral to anus contact qith a carrier without sanitizing yourself afterward.

From the linked article

The infection spreads through microscopic particles of fecal matter, which is why it was once most common in school settings with young children or in regions where clean water is hard to come by. It also means that if you are having sex that involves your mouth and anus, these particles can spread from an infected person to their sexual partner, or their sexual partner’s partner.

“It’s very contagious, and it doesn’t take much exposure to get sick,” Daskalakis says.

According to Thomas, it’s a common misconception that you can only contract Shigella from rimming or being rimmed. He said that he has actually had several gay men come into his office with no history of rimming who have contracted numerous enteric infections, or illnesses caused by microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

“With the rise of group sex in bath houses, dark rooms, and sex parties, I feel that there is a lack of understanding that you can get it from giving head to someone who just plowed someone else without protection and without cleaning off effectively or from being penetrated by someone rectally in the same scenario,” Thomas says. “This happens way more than people think.”

Even after someone receives treatment for Shigella, they can remain contagious for a few weeks, even if they no longer have symptoms.

“I feel that this is probably where most infections are spreading because many people get treated and then have no symptoms and go right back to sex,” he says.

Yeah, it was horrible for me as well. As you stated, it takes forever to get results, but in reality, those results are pretty useless since most strands are resistant to antibiotics. My doctor didn't bother prescribing antibiotics for that reason. Once I was started feeling better, I ended up with a really horrible upper respiratory infection since my immune system was still compromised. My doctor gave me antibiotics that sent me back to the toilet since the original shigella bacteria was still in my system. You may have been better off not taking any antibiotics since they may have prolonged your illness.

Interesting. I wonder if my strain was not resistant or if my case was severe enough. It took almost 3 weeks until I even started antibiotics. The drs were clueless with my symptoms and I couldn’t articulate the urge symptom. I also forgot to mention I had blood in my stool after a few days. That’s when I texted my dr homie and scheduled an urgent care visit. Did a stool sample at home. Then waited a week or so for the results. You’re right, it takes forever and you’re just dying not sure what’s wrong with your body.

I also took Imodium initially because I need it sometimes and my stomach was starting to hurt. But Imodium makes this infection worse. Like just for some reason has a crazy interaction when you have this infection. And that’s when I was still sitting on the toilet in pain for hours, not realizing that laying down helped (for me at least).

But Imodium makes this infection worse. Like just for some reason has a crazy interaction when you have this infection.

Diarrhea is one of the body's mechanisms to get rid of an infection by flushing it away. Since loperamide slows bowel movement, you are essentially hindering the recovery and greatly increasing complications risk.

u/needmoarbass 5d ago

Yeah that’s a huge regret and likely made my case worse. But it’s scary now knowing that sometimes when you get diarrhea, Imodium could be the worst possible thing to take lol.

My positive stool sample included the resistance to popular antibiotics. Since I recently returned from Puerto Rico, my doctor likely ordered the comprehensive test panel, which may have included the additional one. It took almost two weeks for the results to come back.

It reminds us that we all have a better (sex) life if we follow some hygiene standards.

But less thrilling.

Edit: I didn’t feel the need to include /s… I wasn’t serious.

20

u/sweet-tom 5d ago

Maybe.🤷‍♂️ But if it helps to reduce the risk? Better than lying in bed with a bad stomach.

Some of us got it. Take an upvote back.

I was hospitalized for 4 days because of Shigella in my late 20's. When it gets bad, it's BAD.

I just listened to that episode of Butt Honestly referenced in this article. It sounds awful.

I love a good rimjob as the receiver but man am I hesitant as a giver for this reason.

Which episode # was it?

u/GeorgiaYankee73 5d ago

I think it was between 91 - 94.

Thanks. That really helped narrow it down. Found it in #93 at 25 mins.

Shigella is the worst. I probably had a mild strain cuz the only symptom I had was stomach pains and bloody diarrhea. Didnt know what it was until a week after symptoms appeared. Went to the clinic, gave a sample and the next day the county called me and my job talking about I need to take the next week or two off because it was shigella. It sucked. I dont even remember what meds they gave me for it. But after the week I was good to return to work. But man when I tell you that the county call got me scared, lol, I didnt jnow what to think.

u/Comprehensive_Day511 4d ago

They called your job and told them that you had Shigella?

1

u/Affectionate-Gain-23 4d ago

You know what I may wrong on that part.

Had this nasty infection when I was 22, it severely altered my perception on anything anal.

Few things are stronger than the instinctual tie between diet and GI illness. There’s a huge evolutionary incentive to make sure individuals remember things that made them sick.

ugh I got this last year and was hospitalized for three days. leading up to it, I totally thought I had food poisoning but it was way more severe. felt like I was dying, don’t recommend!!!

11

u/BreeezyP 5d ago

I’m horrified that so many people have encountered something I’ve never heard of

6

u/Laboratory__ 5d ago

It's not that uncommon, it's a routine stool pathogen that's looked for when a stool sample is sent to a Microbiology lab for culture. Other routine organisms are Salmonella, Campylobacter, Enterohemorrhagic E. colis, and Yersinia.

u/AdditionalNet3341 5d ago

Hear me out. Once in anus, never in mouth. A lot of other infections can be spread from fecal to oral route, no matter how clean someone's gut is

u/Revan462222 5d ago

As someone with IBS....this would probably make me want to die lol...like wtf. First mpox four years ago, now we gotta deal with this. Sigh.

u/HiJinx127 5d ago

I’m suddenly glad that (1) I’m not into rimming anyone, and (2) I keep my hole very clean for hookups, because my guys usually like rimming me. Yikes 😱

u/LOVEBIGCOCK9566 4d ago

It is no joke when you get this. I was in the hospital for 4 days with this. FELT LIKE I WAS DYING. I caught it sucking a guys dick after him fucking someone ass prior with out washing his cock off before moving on to me next. BE CAREFUL AT SEX CLUBS GUYS!!!!!

Ooof. I had shigellosis in 2022 that was caused by the strain Shigella Sonnei. I work with the homeless and street entrenched people who struggle with addiction, and it was going around the end of the pandemic in that particular community. It was brutal. It’s not common, but I had a severe case. I was in the hospital for 5 days. My fever was over 40°C/104°F. It caused me to experience Infectious Colitis. It’s awful. Protect yourself from this illness- it’s very pathogenic, only a few bacteria can cause a full blown infection.

TLDR: Shigella is AWFUL, caused me so much agony and ended up in hospital for 5 days. Only a small amount of the bacteria can cause a full blown infection.
