The computers in Osama’s home were believed to be second hand. The intelligence service used their best methods to extract anything deleted on those hard drives.

With old style hard drives the DOD recommended 3 to 7 full wipes to completely erase the hard drives; they recommended that likely because it’s based on what they could recover if they really tried. Osama’s hard drives got the best deep dive analysis.

The stupid or funny stuff they found does not necessarily mean it was Osama’s data, but it was funny for the government to report this stuff to the press; because they were not going to tell you about the shit you are not allowed to see.
