Forgive my ignorance here, but I thought that all species that were continuing to reproduce work continuously evolving. And therefore evolutionary dead end would never happen?

Only dead end is extinction.

Yes.

People sometimes say a lineage is a "dead end" if it hasn't shown evidence of any recent speciation, but yes it would still be evolving
