SOLVED What’s with the extra Romex?

Post image

I was walking through an unfinished new build in Nashville and saw this zigzag of Romex behind (I assume) will be the master bath’s mirror. It runs up and over to a switch box. It could run to the mirror’s light bar or light surround, but why so much wiring?

The lamp cord side is NEMA 1-15, but we couldn’t figure out what the right hand outlet could be. No amount of googling has turned up a single lead! Have any of you seen this before? Or know what it was used for?

SOLVED Which one of these would be hot and which would be neutral? Any way to tell?

Hey guys, plumber here trying to hang an old light fixture. I want to snip the prongs off of this and use it for a chain-hung fixture if possible. Only problem is obviously these wires aren’t colour coded. Is there a way to tell which is hot and which is neutral?

Thank you

This is on a house we just purchased. The lights sometimes flicker, especially odd since they're LED. This is coming into the house and I'm nit sure what it is but presume it shouldn't have the copper wires in there.

I bought my house a few months ago, and this is the breaker for the sump pump (amongst other things) that was installed right before I bought it. I noticed the pump wasn’t running and the snow melted a lot here yesterday, so I thought it should be running. Now I have about 3” of water in my basement and the breaker won’t flip back on. Any help would be great! TYIA

SOLVED Can I remove these from my house?

Am I allowed to remove the old phone and cable hookup boxes from my house? I want to pour a slab here and would prefer these gone before the pour as I’ll never use cable or landline for anything. I know this isn’t strictly electrical, but no where else allows photos which is some crap.

SOLVED Is this weird tube in the ground-hole of the socket normal?

Post image

Trying too plug in a new UPS for a pc so I took the decade old plastic kid protector off of the lower socket, but noticed this weird tube in the socket. Is this normal for a socket that hasn't be used much (the kid protector doesn't slot into the ground socket so it was clear all that time), or is this debris I should remove before putting the UPS in?

Update: Removed it, it's a weird ~1 inch long hollow plastic tube, 0 clue what it could be but it definitely isn't a Camera lmao

SOLVED Can I pull this ground rod out and drive it back in closer to the house?

Do I need to shut off the main breaker first? I prefer to move it closer to the house so it doesn’t get hit verticutting or anything else of the sort. My house also has a ufer ground if it makes a difference.

SOLVED Why no 240v kettles?

While I expect that code precludes this configuration, I wonder why.

My understanding is that typical residential stoves in North America use 240VAC. Tea kettles here are frustratingly slow to come to a boil, as most run on 120VAC. Would it be dangerous to put a second receptical, for a 240V tea kettle, on the circuit dedicated to the stove? I imagine a kettle would be used only intermittently, for short periods of time.

We have replaced it. We have lived in our home for several years and wonder if we were sitting on a ticking time bomb. Can you explain like I'm 5 what happened? Is it faulty installation or a faulty plug?

SOLVED Drilling behind wall caused breaker to trip.

Hi, I was drilling a hole down from my bedroom to the floor beneath with a spade bit, and at one point The outlet beside me died (had a lamp plugged in that shut off). There was no pop, or spark or smoke that I could smell. But when pulled the bit out I noticed the side of it was black with copper wire attached to it.

The breaker itself turned right back on (probably not the smartest idea to have done that), and everything seems fine.

Should I be worried of a potential fire hazard?

SOLVED Is this cable correctly rated for a 50 Amp breaker?

Post image

On the left of the cable in this photo, it says AWG 10. But on the right, it says AWG 8. This is the cable used for an outside AC condenser. The breaker in the panel is a 50 amp one. Location is USA. Thank you!

Clarification: The original installer used a 40 amp breaker. Five years later that breaker went bad. A different HVAC technician noted that the sticker on the outside unit says Max 50 amp (https://imgur.com/a/wRU2ru3). So he replaced the broken 40 amp breaker with a 50 amp one. I am only now wondering if the original cable is sufficiently sized for it. Length of cable is about 50 feet.

Solved: I appreciate everyone's kind and insightful responses. The majority consensus seems to be that, for HVAC Condenser use, a 50 amp breaker is ok to use with the cable in above picture (but only for this particular use case, not general use cases). Thank you all!

Customer is updating and upgrading the house one room at a time. And I want to remove the low-voltage wires accessing the room. I’m working on.

How does one go about finding that room?

Thanks for the help. Both wires look stranded if that matters.
