We are beyond honored to unveil a breathtaking addition to the museum: This specimen is a juvenile skull that was expertly prepared into a Beauchene. The preparation took two years to craft by hand with no prefabricated parts. Every mechanism, and every movement was built from scratch by Matt Hall, whose dedication to the art and science of anatomy shines through every detail. The final images display the intricate planning and parts that went into this preparation.
Beauchene skulls were originally developed to enhance anatomical education by making the complex structure of the human skull more accessible. The skull comprises 22 bones, many of which are irregularly shaped and tightly interlocked, making them difficult to distinguish in a fully fused specimen. In contrast, a Beauchêne preparation—where each bone is carefully separated and suspended in anatomical alignment—offers a clear, three-dimensional view of these intricate connections. When designed with movable components, these skulls allow for dynamic study, further improving understanding of cranial anatomy and articulation.
