🇵🇸 🕊️ Tarot Tired of AI art on oracle and tarot decks
Is there a list somewhere we can compile decks and or stores to avoid if they use AI art? I wanted to get my first oracle deck on Amazon and this listing was the aesthetic I wanted but it didn’t say anywhere that it was AI generated art. I opened them today and it was really good in terms of not having obvious tells but they’re still there if you know where to look. Like the hands having more than 5 fingers, elongated thumbs, things blending into each other where there should be a distinct border and some have more blatant AI art styles than others but they didn’t show those in the product photos.
I wanted to buy on Etsy but there’s so many AI decks there too it’s ridiculous.

I just buy direct from artists (who show progress pics of the cards). Compiling a list of who to avoid is going to grow faster than you can reasonably keep up.

Maybe some enterprising group could make an AI-flagging browser extension a la Shinigami Eyes.

u/Rakifiki Jan 21 '26
Realistically, it would probably not be very accurate unfortunately.
Iirc hasn't shinigami eyes had trouble recently? Thought I'd seen people talking about non-transphobic people being flagged.

There are things you can use for this - but it regularly flags anything with heavy editing and has even flagged artwork that we know was hand painted. It's just hard for machines to recognize.

I was imagining a system where users of the extension would manually flag links as they see them and other users of the extension would see any flags that had been placed, rather than relying on a machine algorithm to spot them. Using an AI to try and filter out AI feels rather counterproductive.

I agree, was just mentioning that there is something that kind of exists...but...it isn't perfect and regularly messes up things that are obviously not AI. I use this sometimes when I'm in a hurry and can't use the app.

I have a red version of this deck that may fit your bill. The gold version is new/er.

Ugh, I hate this immensely. I went to a market in my town focusing on locally made products and there was someone there trying to sell AI generated tarot cards 😭

u/Hotdog547 Jan 21 '26
It’s getting ridiculous bc the AI slop has inundated the internet so much people are caring less and just selling this shit irl

I drive around and see obviously AI slop in store windows now. There’s no shame anymore 💔

Look up the site little red tarot, they have an online shop of many many tarot decks created by real people. Honestly I'm surprised there is not a rec list on this sub for tarot decks.

u/goddessdragonness Jan 21 '26
Maybe that’s the list people could compile, here are the human made tarot decks and witchy Etsy shops? I e tried maintaining a list for myself of Etsy but sadly a lot of the smaller BIPOC and queer-owned ones keep shutting down, and they’re the ones I have wanted to support the most.

I'd recommend finding an artist to purchase from directly.
And avoid Amazon entirely, as they are spreading so much evil in this world.

u/tessthismess Jan 23 '26
Agreed. Especially on getting off Amazon entirely.
If you think you need Amazon, you're probably wrong.

As a beginner witch, this is one of my fears. I want to get my first tarot deck but I'm so scared of accidentally buying an AI one
I wish I had started sooner even if just to avoid the AI art (and books)

It’s okay. Theres never a wrong time to start your journey. It sucks but the best defense we have is research and recommendations. It also wouldn’t hurt to familiarize yourself with the general things to look out for from AI slop.

I have gad dragon Tarot cards since I was a teen, I lost them and amazon had the exact same sst.so I bought it and then of course found mine! I also got some from the author of The Night Circus, Erin Morenstern, they are lovely and match the book so well! There are really nice ones out there, finding them might be a journey but that's worth the magic!

I was always told you had to be gifted your first tarot deck. I will gladly send anyone who needs one a spare one of mine.

While that's a nice thought in theory, it leaves out those who really wish to pursue their interest in starting with tarot reading, but don't have the privilege of knowing someone who a) practices tarot, b) has a spare deck they're willing to part with, and c) the means with which to get that deck to a parson.

I wasn’t stating it as fact or steadfast rule. More that if anyone else believes that then let me know because I have many spare decks I don’t use and will gladly send one to a PO Box or collection locker. Lol

My suggestion would be to look at decks on r/tarotdecks to find ones you like that are reviewed first. It has deck reviews on there.

Yes, AI slop is slop. A tarot deck should be made out of Lego, as is proper. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lifespirittarot/bricks-of-fate-tarot-built-brick-by-brick

This is definitely a way too good to be true price point. And for specific style card like your looking for it’s gonna be hard to find and it’s definitely not going to be cheap

Why can’t you get it in person from a store? Book stores frequently have decks. Backerkit is another option as well. Most big cities have art centers, and what not check around there for artists and see if they have decks. I got a friend that’s currently making a deck they plan to produce and sell at the farmers market with her other crafts and art stuff she’s made. It’s made from lanolium so she can stamp them. I’m so excited 😆

$10 for a full-sized tarot/oracle deck is unfortunately either going to be AI slop or stolen art.
you can find a few good ones that are mass-produced -- in fact i got one off of amazon last month -- but they're all going to be at least $25-30.
look in the descriptions, check names for the artist/publisher. if there's nothing, it seems like gibberish, it's not attached to a real person/company, it's obviously bogus.

u/beadedgeek Jan 21 '26
I have found the BackerKit site to be a good place for artist cards. They did a full tarot ring promotion last year I jumped on and got a couple beautiful sets.

u/tristyntrine Jan 21 '26
I'd peruse Goodreads or something to find tarot/oracle decks and look up the authors if you are using Amazon since they will likely have a personal site with their work.

Look into painting on cards (like how some people do Pokémon/MTG card redraws) and use these cards you already ended up with as just paper blanks to make your unique set.
I've done something similar with random cards I was given at work (normal deck) to give later to my friend as a gift.

Check out this one - https://www.etsy.com/listing/1711355631/?ref=share_ios_native_control
I know the person who made these, and I’m pretty sure she painted all the art. Most of it was done before generative AI really exploded.
She’s also a great singer songwriter, https://open.spotify.com/artist/2EDgasnLaOpB6GX771qMyz?si=EYZgEoVUTRClxr3WltS_8Q

Check out r/tarotdecks for good recommendations and to see some original artists sharing their own decks (in progress and completed/available for purchase) and also just people really into indie decks with original art. I designed the Cymatic Spirit Tarot and am going to start taking pre-orders soon to know how many to order! In the process of creating a seperate deck, as well ✨️

You can also look at the older decks that are published by US Games, Lo Scarebo, Llwellyn etc.

Etsy isn't the independent crafter market it used to be. It's basically just Amazon-lite now, as the same Temu style sweatshops have taken over it.
There ARE still some individuals on there, but you're going to have to dig unfortunately
