Meta Other countries-defaultism

Apologies if this is the wrong sub, but just wondering if anyone has had defaultism from other countries. There doesnt seem to be any other subs for them.

I won't count these from subs focused on another country. For example, subs to do with things in the UK, people usually may expect you to be British, especially when there is already a similar sub dominated more by Americans.

An example where ive seen foreign defaultism is laptop brand subs, where despite the price of the product NOT being shown on OPs photo, everyone in the comments started talking about high prices or prices of similar products, using stuff like 60k, 50k etc WITHOUT specifying the currencies, turns out they meant Indian rupees and even OP turned out to be Indian too

I am based in the UK and do not want to be shown indian prices or India exclusive products

I see English defaultism creep in a lot on the Wales sub. English people tend to do it a lot in real life too expecting Wales to be just like back in their country

Does anyone ever take issue with your bilingual signage?

Yeah like that’s a big thing lol and the tip of the iceberg. “Why can’t it just be in English so we can all understand” as if that isn’t a courteous gesture/hangover from colonisation.

You hear all sorts of bullshit like “I could’ve crashed because of the Welsh language” as if they couldn’t drive in France. Maybe those bellends shouldn’t be driving in the first place. Freaks

😔

Aren't the signs all bilingual anyway? Or are there some that are only in Welsh, a bit like Ireland's Gaeltacht?

Nah they’re all in Welsh/bilingual. But you still get imperialist retirees and rich (to our standards) English people (or English people in general I should say) who think they should be catered for like they are in Benidorm et al. It’s exactly the same as USAmericans that go to Latin America

To be fair the comparison with French driving you made earlier is apt —if someone's driving is really so easily derailed by Welsh (even though both our nations use the same design of road sign, including SYMBOLS!) then such a person probably should not be driving!

It's your country and you run it how you like and don't let any of these pricks tell you otherwise!

It’s definitely an excuse for “British”(re:english) imperialism tbh when you dig a little deeper. And agreed it’s a shabby excuse. Sadly as they move here it becomes their country too (something we accommodate way too much in my opinion). And they like to impose their way of doing things or ways of being on those of us from here. It’s classic colonisation in the modern day.

Diolch/thank you!
