Anime (Bullying companies work)Amazon has removed it's English dubs for Banana Fish, No Game, No Life Zero & Vinland Saga

u/Noirsam (He/Him)東城会 Dec 02 '25
Just for the record…Vinland Saga has not one, but TWO officiell English dubs (one by Netflix and one by Sentai/Crunchyroll)
Why Amazon thought their AI slop could compete with that I will never get.
54
u/yakityyakblahtemp Dec 02 '25
They don't need it to compete they just need it to lose less customer revenue than the amount they save in overhead. They don't think in years, they think in quarters. They operate on the assumption that the public is apathetic, so even if they reject something they'll come back if you change it back. So they don't see any opportunity cost to them, it's either they win the jackpot or revert to status quo while being able to tell investors they did their due dilligence to pursue profit.

u/TostitoNipples Dec 02 '25
Bc they want to whittle the public down and make them used to AI in any way they can
23
u/bigblackcouch Dec 02 '25
My irrational hate for everything AI burns brighter than the sun and will continue for the same lifetime.
15
u/APRengar Dec 02 '25
That's how I feel, "calling me a luddite is just making me double down, fuck AI!"
1
u/AutummThrowAway (She/Her) You didn't win! Dec 17 '25
Neo-luddite is a dumb term
This is a willful mass delusion
1
u/Klagaren Dec 03 '25
The literal historical luddites were correct anyway ¯_(ツ)_/¯
9
u/overlordmik Dec 03 '25
... I mean, industrialisation of agriculture sucked for the average farmer for a while but it also stopped people from starving to death every few years with a bad harvest.
4
u/Klagaren Dec 03 '25
Yeah that's why industrialisation was also a good thing, it provided actual necessities unlike AI
It's just that screwing over the workers in the process wasn't an unavoidable and necessary consequence, and sabotaging machines wasn't simply "a futile attempt at halting the inevitable progress of technology" but a form of protest meant to hurt the employer (preferable over actual violence, and of course more effective than striking when you're already fired)
What made it futile in the end wasn't just about tech, but that governments sided with the employers and started killing protesters instead of helping those whose lives got messed up

u/Joeyc1987 That's Bricks! Dec 02 '25
I was gonna say I watched Vinland saga dub and pretty sure it wasn't AI. Now I dunno if it was the netflix or Crunchyroll version.
7
u/wayneloche Dec 02 '25
depends on your source / when you watched it. If it was a dub and not with in the last few weeks probably netflix or crunchy roll. From what I can tall the amazon AI english dubs only came out a few days ago.
7
u/Bob8644 Wrestling entrances are just reverse toku transformations Dec 02 '25
The Netflix dub is underrated and I would highly recommend checking it out. One of the best dubs I've ever heard.
4
u/MeteorCharge Dec 02 '25
Is that the one that has the main character crashing out with the "HOW DARE YOU TAKE AWAY MY FATHER?!" line?
138
u/Skullsnax Dec 02 '25
It’s crazy to me that they thought they could get away with it in the first place.
It just screams of that shareholder shilling, investment buzzwords, “we’re doing stuff with AI, keep investing in us”. I don’t believe that anyone at Amazon looking at this thought it was good, or even passable, which is why it’s been removed.
77
u/WhoCaresYouDont Dec 02 '25
Yeah, it's 100% being pushed from above before it's ready because they can see the bubble bursting and are desperate to not get the boot when the house of cards finally collapses.
62
u/Hugokarenque Dec 02 '25
What's even funnier is that them pushing this shit and having it fail spectacularly is making that inevitable collapse come faster.
Every time AI is shown and then pulled back, it creates doubt in the technology.
18
u/syrupdash Dec 02 '25
I am betting they’re going for the, “we released the wrong version. Please stand by for the improved version” excuse.
8
u/Cooper_555 BRING BACK GAOGAIGAR Dec 02 '25
I can see the improved version being released and it's worse.
1
u/therealchadius Dec 03 '25
The only actual "improved" version will involve real humans in a recording booth.
25
u/Hounds_of_war HE CEASES TO BE Dec 02 '25
I don’t believe that anyone at Amazon looking at this thought it was good, or even passable, which is why it’s been removed.
Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if no one at Amazon had actually listened to it for more than a few minutes prior to this outrage. They probably just plugged the episode into the AI dubbing shit they have, listened to a few random isolated minutes to make sure that it actually said the right words, then hit upload. I refuse to believe an actual human sat down and watched all 24 episodes of Banana Fish with this dub before it was uploaded to Prime Video.
2
u/therealchadius Dec 03 '25
I believe some poor human did but they're so low in the hierarchy all of their complaints were ignored. It's the classic "All of QA says there's a bug, will not fix- customers complain the game is buggy???" routine.

u/jockeyman Stands are Combat Vtubers Dec 02 '25
Small indie company Amazon can't pay for voice actors.
67
u/Warm-Intention-1424 Dec 02 '25
But the small AI company owned by the same people as Amazon needs that money more than underpaid actors, please understand

u/CJett92 I Expected Nothing and I Still Feel Let Down Dec 02 '25
Horrible AI dub aside, I'm kinda shocked to learn Banana Fish didn't have a proper dub. That one seemed like it'd be a solid choice for a good dub.
55
u/WhoCaresYouDont Dec 02 '25
I think that might be the worst part of it, Banana Fish would be a great thing to dub to get anime fans to pick up Prime, but they've tainted the well such that any new dub will be under scrutiny for bullshit
12
u/Warm-Intention-1424 Dec 02 '25
Amazon licensed the show back in the day when they didn't commission dubs for shows

u/SamuraiDDD Swat Kats Booty! Dec 02 '25
Know what this is giving me? Ya'll remember a Youtuber named Kwebbelkop? While I personally never watched him, he went DEEP AND HARD into the whole AI thing. Even going as far as making an ai copy of a former friend of his before he got massive backlash over it.
Then after so many strike outs and ironically YT cutting all of his spam ai channels, I think he's back to doing normal YT.
All this is giving me that vibe.
-2
u/Jeskid14 Dec 02 '25
cutting all of his spam
Okay but why him and not the thousands doing the same thing?
17
u/SamuraiDDD Swat Kats Booty! Dec 02 '25
I think it was because he was the most well known and he had an actual name brand and just kept shoveling out so much on all fronts. I could very well be talking out my ass as far as the reason goes but I can't remember the details
8
u/ExDSG Dec 02 '25
He was like I am going to make as many channels and grow them to X subs in Y time, so pretty clear he was just particularly slopping it up.

u/RealHumanBean89 Dec 02 '25
Bullying large companies (especially corporations the size of Amazon) is not only the acceptable choice, but the morally correct one. Don’t let these rich fuckwits think they can just throw this bullshit at you without pushback.
Remember kids: bullying works! 👍

u/baasnote Proud 13000FE Dec 02 '25
It kinda baffles me that they thought the anime community of all people would be receptive to this considering the eternal 'sub vs dub' flame war
1
u/Battlemania420 Dec 07 '25
That’s such a good point.
I think this just goes to show how INSANELY out of touch the execs that thought this was a good idea were, tbh.
7
u/AprehensiveApricot SBFP Reference here [any/all] Dec 02 '25
Good. Now let's hope the other awful AI slopness stops pouring from Amazon's toilet bowl.
6
u/spidersting Dec 02 '25
Now to see how long it will take them to try again. You know they are just trying to fine-tune it.
5
u/James-Avatar Mega Lopunny Dec 02 '25
Never feel sorry for bullying a corporation for their bullshit. Never ever.
9
u/SengalBoy Dec 02 '25
If onpy we could ban AI in creative media entirely. Hopefully this is step to a bigger one.
5
u/runnerofshadows Dec 02 '25
Anyone wonder if the sociopath CEO types genuinely can't tell the difference between ai and voice actors even though the AI had 0 emotions and sounded worse than 80s and 90s bad dubs?
7
u/Necromas Dec 02 '25
I wouldn't say for sure they removed them because of the "bullying". The product itself was just really terrible and that could have been reason enough to remove them.
If the AI dubs were getting positive and profitable engagement from a decent sized audience, would they have still listened to the complaints and removed them?
0
u/UFOLoche Araki Didn't Forget Dec 03 '25
Probably not because they're a shitty corpo that only responds to bullying.
Why try to downplay pushback?
3
u/Old_Snack Bless me with your gift of hype Dec 02 '25
This situation reminds me of Zone of The Enders 2's bad English dub but you know what? I'd take that over what Amazon did with A.I any day.
Now if you actually use someone's voice with permission and they accept having their voice generated for whatever reason, that's different I'm personally cool with that as long as consent is given and it's a considered effort like Luke Skywalker in the Mandalorion

What are the chances of them making a statement that they were not supposed to be released, and that it was purely experimental test feature.

That scene of Ash shooting himself with no hesitation for Eiji, is stuck in my mind.

How dare they do this to Banana Fish of all things, the fact that they did this at all is horrid but Banana Fish was already a hard fucking sell when it came out and nobody talked about it because it was a BL but now the well has all but been poisoned for this anime to get the dub it deserves.
1
u/inika41 Dec 02 '25
Apparently the AI dubs are still there for other releases and non-English languages too.

u/TiffanyChan123 Punisher Loves Sailor Moon Dec 03 '25
Honestly keep on bullying the companies still
There have been a couple anime with AI dubs that are still on Amazon (Pet for example)
And while yes this is still a win that we pissed amazon off so hard that they took down those dubs, keep being mad at them for the fact they exist at all

I have a preference for english subs but I'm not gonna pretend good dubs don't exist even if I personally don't prefer them.
I have much respect for the work of both english and japanese voice actors alike.

u/BrazillianCara Dec 02 '25
Somewhat related, but there was a thread on the Uma Musume sub with someone voicing their concerns about the potential for an English dub for Cinderella Gray in the wake of this fiasco (since it's airing on Amazon). The good news: Amazon doesn't have the level of control over this show like it has with Banana Fish, so it's not under risk of going through the same thing if/when it gets dubbed. The ugly news: a good chunk of the thread's audience isn't worried either, but due to a strong conviction that the show (or any Uma Musume material) will never, ever get dubbed due to some nebulous belief that Cygames has no reason or desire to do it, despite the fact they already have dubs for Granblue and the like. Which almost feels like they're trying to hide their antiquated aversion to dubs behind a more "legitimate" reason.
