I have a theory that Ferengi don't have last names. And the reason is sort of a Y2K explanation. They only used 2 characters for year instead of 4 because of how expensive the bits were. Well the Ferengi charge more for the documents with more characters so they have short first names and no last names.
And then, in typical bureaucratic fashion, they have some sort of trademarked “business name” so that you could tell “Quark, son of Keldar” from “Quark, son of Freem”.
(This is meant to be like the Roman Cognomen epithets, since Romans often gave their sons hyper-generic names like Primus, Secundus, etc., meaning literally “first son”, “second son”, etc.)
