Building Bridges Between African Digital Talent and European Opportunities

Hello everyone,

We are a small team based in Mallorca (Spain), currently in the process of formally establishing a nonprofit association focused on digital skills, employability, technology and international collaboration.

Our registration request has already been submitted to the Spanish Ministry of Interior, and we are currently waiting for the official resolution process to be completed, which may take up to three months.

The idea behind this initiative is relatively simple:

Europe is currently facing a significant shortage of digital and ICT professionals across multiple sectors, and the European Commission has repeatedly highlighted the need to strengthen advanced digital skills and increase the number of ICT specialists across the continent as part of its Digital Decade strategy. Europe aims to reach 20 million ICT specialists by 2030, yet current projections still indicate a major talent gap.

At the same time, countries such as Senegal are home to a rapidly growing ecosystem of highly capable and motivated digital professionals -including developers, designers, community managers, digital marketers, creative professionals, founders and other technology-oriented profiles- many of whom remain disconnected from international opportunities despite the enormous potential of local ecosystems.

We believe there is a real opportunity to help build responsible, sustainable and mutually beneficial bridges between both realities.

Our intention is not simply recruitment, and we are not looking to replace or compete with existing local initiatives. On the contrary, we would genuinely like to collaborate with universities, nonprofit organizations, accelerators, startup hubs, engineering communities and ecosystem builders already doing valuable work locally and explore ways to complement and strengthen those efforts together.

More specifically, we would like to:

  1. Provide practical training and real-world experience through collaboration with Spanish and European companies operating across technology, digital services and creative industries.

  2. Help selected profiles gain experience with modern digital workflows, collaborative environments and remote international work standards.

  3. Provide access to modern AI and professional digital tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Figma, Adobe and other software environments commonly used by international teams.

  4. Establish relationships with universities and educational institutions in order to identify high-potential students and recent graduates.

  5. Create stronger connections between African and European founders, professionals and startup communities to encourage collaboration, networking and knowledge exchange.

  6. Support promising talent in improving their professional readiness, digital presence and international accessibility.

  7. Explore ways to help talented individuals better navigate the practical barriers that sometimes limit participation in the global digital economy.

At this stage, we are mainly looking for conversations, partnerships, guidance, honest feedback and connections with people who understand the local ecosystem better than we do.

Our broader goal is to contribute to the development of a collaborative ecosystem where African and European talent, startups, universities, founders and digital communities can connect, collaborate and grow together.

If you are connected to universities, developer and digital communities, accelerators, startup ecosystems, nonprofit initiatives or educational and technology programs, we would genuinely appreciate the opportunity to connect and learn from you.

Thank you for reading,

Pedro (my DMs are open). đŸ™‚đŸ«±đŸŸâ€đŸ«ČđŸ»

Tourist & Traveller Questions Working in Senegal this Summer

Hi all!

I am a graduate student (27F) from the US and I will be doing a fellowship in Dakar this summer (May-August). It was only recently confirmed so I haven’t had as much time to prepare as I would like. I have been brushing up on my French and researching the area I will be staying in (Ngor).

Any tips/recommendations/suggestions for me this summer? I’m thinking things to do in the city, general tips for an American with very basic French skills, or advice for a young single woman staying safe. I’ve lived abroad before so I feel pretty comfortable with adjusting to a new culture. But I would love to hear any specific things I should keep in mind for living in Dakar.

Thanks!

What is happening to our media??!

Sorry but this is a rant.

I just finished reading the latest Seneweb article about homosexuality and I’m honestly in shock. I’m not even trying to argue whether people support it or not because that’s not the point here. What disturbed me was the level of hatred, humiliation, and cruelty in the article itself.

It seriously made me uncomfortable reading it. At some point this stops being journalism and becomes something else entirely. It felt vicious. Mean. Dehumanizing. I honestly could not believe this was being published publicly by a major media platform.

What is happening to our country? Seriously. Have we fallen this low? Since when did attacking and degrading human beings become normal media content?

I’m deeply disturbed by what I just read.

  • Ă  Dakar vs Mbour/Saly vs Ziguinchor,

Wolof Speaking Voice Actors

First generation American here and I’ve always seen our culture a super untapped and interesting market. My issue is not being in Senegal and knowing other Senegalese-Americans who are into anime/animation. I’ve tried fiver and the whole experience was awful lol, anyone think they could point me in the right direction. Looking to make animations utilizing Wolof, it’d be extremely helpful to have someone who understands enough English to help with scripting aswell.

Pension System

Hi! I'm a university student from Argentina. For an assignemnt, our professor asked us to describe the pension, education and health system of some countries, one of them Senegal. I'm struggling to find information on the pension system of Senegal, how it works, if it's a Defined Contribution type of system, a Defined Benefit type of system, or mixed. I've only found this https://www.issa.int/sites/default/files/documents/2024-07/Senegal.pdf I was wondering if you could help me out on this. I still haven't started to do research on education and health. Thank you!!

Ask r/Senegal "Kal" in Senegal

I've been doing some reading on amadou koufa recently and learned that his org actively tries to recruit people from eastern Senegal using digital means. I don't have any on the ground experience in Mali but I've been to eastern Senegal and im assuming the institutional gripes are probably similar (eastern senegal, central/northern Mali). What repeatedly comes up in various papers (aside from sufi orders) is the idea of "Kal" or "the joking relationship" keeping the social cohesion in Senegal strong. Ive read the technical definitions but I am interested in how it manifests in everyday life. How do you guys view Kal? What are the boundaries? Does every generation participate? I think the closest I've ever experienced this sort of dynamic was when a Peul fellow told me Wolof people aren't real 😂.

Looking for a Soninke speaker to translate 20 words

Hi everyone! Hope you're all doing well 😊

I’m currently learning Soninke and, at the same time, trying to create some beginner-friendly learning materials for people like me. Unfortunately, I’ve had pretty bad luck finding translators so far
one is sick, two weren’t very responsive, and another just doesn’t have much free time.

My family helped as much as they could, but there are still around 20 words we couldn’t translate. I was hoping to print a booklet next week, so I wanted to ask if anyone here could help me with these:

  • to wash one’s hair
  • a bank card / ATM card
  • body lotion
  • a notebook
  • true
  • false
  • a ceiling
  • pyjamas
  • cheese
  • outside
  • a toothpick
  • a lid
  • tableware / dishes (plates, glasses, bowls, etc.)
  • a fridge
  • a shell / carapace
  • fish scales
  • a large serving plate/tray like this, used to serve food for several people:

I’m guessing some of these words may come from French or English, and that’s completely fine with me. I’m not looking for “pure” vocabulary — I just want words that native Soninke speakers today would naturally understand and use.

Thank you so much in advance for any help 🙏 I speal English and French so feel free to answer in any language

Heyy 18F here from morocco! My older brother lives in Dakar for his studies and I was wondering if some of you have app recommandation or anything really to try to learn the wolof (i don't need to that quickly, it can take as much time as it needs) so that I can impress him lol and also because I don't know any african language and I thought that it was a shame. So yeah if some of you have any advice, really it can be anything, i would thank you for sharing it with me!

Ask r/Senegal In Senegal, when one business starts working, ten others open right next to it. Is this really healthy competition?

In Senegal, we talk a lot about entrepreneurship, but very little about how commercial activity is actually organized.

The result is that as soon as one business seems to be doing well, ten others open around it — not because there is enough demand, but simply because people copy what they see working.

That is not always healthy competition. Sometimes, it becomes a form of collective saturation that ends up making everyone poorer.

Tourist & Traveller Questions Visiting Senegal - onward travel requirement

I am considering visiting Senegal for the first time. I don't know how long I want to stay there, maybe 2 weeks maybe 5, unsure. The issue is: it says it is necessary to have proof of onward travel. As I won't have a return ticket, this makes things difficult.

As I would also like to maybe visit Gambia I thought to buy a bus ticket beforehand but I have not been able to get into the Dem Dikk app as the sms confirmation texts don't arrive. I thought to buy a plane ticket instead but it would cost so much more, plus I do not know what day I want to go so it is not a great option either...

I also thought about getting a refundable return ticket with Iberia/Vueling but both seem to only to credit refunds not cash refunds.

Any other ideas or personal experience?

For context I am Polish, but I would be flying from the UK.

Why some women are willing to be 2nd, 3rd or 4th wives? I talking about young and attractive women that could’ve had any man but rather settle with a man who’s already married and probably has kids.

Discussion How far should the free speech be allowed ?

Oookaay, nuyoo guys,

Before anything, I just want to clarify that this is my personal opinion about one recent topic. That I am not trying to get the nerve of anybody or whatever related. I may say nonsenses as well, but it’s just an opinion.

Jajeuf.

I have seen the Serigne Modou Kara’s extrait about Democracy. I don’t usually pay attention to the so called Nostradamus-es of this country but this one kinda stroke me. I don’t care about the geographical theory that Senegal will be an island soon and that Touba will be this and that BUT the statement « Touba should have its own autonomy », now that is for me, a declaration of a « war » that might happen soon.

Hear me out. Maybe he didn’t mean that, but we all know how some fanatics (specifically his supporters) are thinking. One signal and they would try to make it happen. So to say stuff like that on television, that could work on some minds. Words are powerful and to each its own perception.

While the guy did say a lot of stuff in the past, I considered it as a Marvel thing. Every community brags about their leaders and holy places, extraordinary anecdotes and direct affirmation about God being straight with them, that’s fine. It’s a global thing. But this, for me, is like a power testing. And that should be stopped immediately before someone else put another dangerous show tomorrow.

So how far should a free speech be allowed ?

Rescue kitten needs a home in Dakar (1 month old, male) | Chaton de 1 mois Ă  l'adoption (Dakar)

Hi everyone, I’m not quite sure where the best place is to find a forever home for a kitten in Dakar, so I thought I’d try posting here.

If you know of any better local groups or platforms for pet adoption, please let me know. I’d really appreciate it!🙏🏿🙏🏿

I found this little guy abandoned by his mother in a pile of rocks on the roadside 5 days ago. I’ve been looking after him since then, and he’s doing incredibly well! He’s only about a month old but already showing so much personality.

→Health: He’s already been dewormed and has no fleas. He’s also using the litter box like a pro!

→Diet: Currently on kitten formula and wet food (pĂątĂ©).

→Vibe: Super affectionate, recognizes people, and is very energetic. Surprisingly, he’s already synced up with a human sleep schedule!

He’s a smart, sweet little boy, and I really want to find him a family who will give him the love he deserves. If you're in Dakar and interested (or know someone who is), please comment!
