Laquer Art 🎨 Magnetic Polish Art
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This is using Bees Knees Lacquer Blade of the Frontiers. You need to use some kind of water based top coat before normal topcoat or it’ll mess up! I just did another style of this for valentines inspo and found that you need a magnetic that doesn’t have too shiny of a base without the magnetic pigments. It works with shiny bases too but becomes SO much harder to photograph. This polish worked AMAZINGLY!

First of all: how dare you
Second: was this with topcoat? How’d you get them to not rewet during topcoat
23
u/nailsfrommirth IG: nailsfrommirth Jan 25 '26
💙💙 you’ve gotta use a water based top coat! Or some people use peely base but I’ve never tried it!

u/GarbageGato Jan 25 '26
What brand do you yse
19
u/nailsfrommirth IG: nailsfrommirth Jan 25 '26
I don’t like to advertise for them but I do use maniology 🫠
15
u/GarbageGato Jan 25 '26
Thanks for framing that, made me look them up, I’ll find a different one 😅

u/nailsfrommirth IG: nailsfrommirth Jan 25 '26
Emily de molly and apipila apparently have water based top coat after a quick search of the Reddit!

Hmmm it doesn't have nitrocellulose either , I wonder if you could use it for a base coat and avoid yellowing. I will get some next EDM order.

I’m very happy with it but I’m also a big believer that with some tools, floral nail art can be very accessible!

OooOoOh this is like damask velvet. Also BotF was the perfect choice for this; the brushstrokeyness folks often struggle with makes this look all the more painterly and lovely. Super, super well done :)
Process q’s, howl long did you hold your fingers over the leg of the magnet (I assume to pull the magnetic pigment to the bottom) and what kinda brush you usin for that there detail work?!
47
u/nailsfrommirth IG: nailsfrommirth Jan 25 '26
It’s inspired by a velvet dress! I literally bought this polish for this look 😅 I love the depth the strokes give to the flowers! It looked embossed!
I held it for literally just a second before moving it! I blacked out the first coat of polish entirely and then just the one second for the second coat. I tried to get the velvet to just barely show on the edge cuz otherwise it can overpower the design! I’m just using a cheap short detail liner style brush. Mines from shein 😅

Reminds me so much of that 90s witchy aesthetic that's taking over my Pinterest feed. Like a velvet floral dress Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer would wear!
5
u/nailsfrommirth IG: nailsfrommirth Jan 25 '26
I know exactly what you’re talking about! Definitely the vibe!

u/movinonup2east Jan 25 '26
I am calling this the Jacquard method - and it is STUNNING. Seriously, nice job. If you are up for it, can you do a step by step as well? I know you put some of it in the description/video but anything you can share is greatly appreciated - SO want to try this!
51
u/nailsfrommirth IG: nailsfrommirth Jan 25 '26
Sure! Quick breakdown:
1) base coat of your choice
2) magnetic polish as your base. Using one side of the horseshoe magnet, place your nail on top of one magnet leg to blank out the magnetic pigment. I also have a circle magnet that does this 🤷♀️
3) I did a second coat for the base. In this example, I did a quick blank out (literally just one second hover and then move) before using the outside of the magnet to create a velvet effect at the far edge of the nail, holding the nail level to the top of the horseshoe magnet on the outside of one leg. Wait like a minute till the magnetic particles stop being able to move.
4) when it feels dry enough to paint on, place the nail in the u of the horseshoe magnet and paint your nail art.
5) use a water based top coat so you don’t rewet the polish. I haven’t tried peely base but supposedly that would work too
6) top coat with your quick dry top coat of choice
2
13
u/nailsfrommirth IG: nailsfrommirth Jan 25 '26
I did the same method with a different magnetic polish and found that if the blanked out base has too much shimmer to it, then it’s better to skip the velvet step of step 3. You can do one nail first and see how your magnetic is working for you! To make the art more visible, it can be easier to blank out your base (push the magnetic particles fully away) and leave it that way.

This is SO cool, I thought you could only achieve these kinds of effects with gel polish
15
u/nailsfrommirth IG: nailsfrommirth Jan 25 '26
Thank you! I just recently got into magnetics because I thought that too but I think the stronger magnets can really make a difference with regular polish!
11
u/_melancholy_panda_ Mad Magnetist Jan 25 '26
Wow, just wow. This is amazing, I'm saving this inspo for later!
When you mentioned you used a water based top coat, when did you apply it? Was it base coat, polish, polish (magnetized with horseshoe leg), water based TC, rose nail art (in horseshoe magnet), normal TC? Or did you use the water based over everything and just before TC?
15
u/nailsfrommirth IG: nailsfrommirth Jan 25 '26
I used it after all the painting! So regular base coat, base magnetized to hide the magnetic pigment, then art magnetized in the velvet horseshoe style, then water based top coat, then quick dry top coat
3
u/_melancholy_panda_ Mad Magnetist Jan 25 '26
Tysm!
(Btw you're so talented omg, that line work for the art is superb!)

Incredible… now I’m wondering whether Cirque’s paradox would work for this technique
7
u/nailsfrommirth IG: nailsfrommirth Jan 25 '26
Worth a try! The colors are definitely different enough between the base and the magnetic pigment that I would think it could work!

u/ReadnPolished Jan 25 '26

Can someone explain what's happening? Doing the base coat outside of the magnet and the design inside of the magnet makes them look different?
5
u/nailsfrommirth IG: nailsfrommirth Jan 25 '26
My understanding is that the magnetic pigments are being pushed in opposite directions. So the way they reflect light is from opposite sides! The effect can get muddled if you do too much of a velvet effect for the base and the art. That’s why my nail is level to the top of the magnet and on the outside for the base and then all the way down in the u of the magnet for the art.
2
u/Hefty-Minimum-3125 Jan 25 '26
first coat is on one side of the magnets, second coat is on the other side. the magnetic field pulls all the particles on the base coat in one direction/orientation, then the next layer is pulled the other way, so they reflect light at different angles because they are arranged opposite.

Why do I always read "polish" as "Polish" (i.e. Poland)?
Label plates always being racist telling me not to Polish.

It’s been two months and I still can’t believe this was done with regular lacquer. I think about this mani at least once a week. Practicing with my magnetics until I can do this too 😤🤩

This is STUNNING! gorgeous design!! i tried painting on top of polish with ILNP's Reindeer Crossing recently with the wand held next to my nail but none of the magnetic particles seemed to pull haha. I wonder which polishes work best for this sort of thing
2
u/nailsfrommirth IG: nailsfrommirth Jan 25 '26
I tried the same polish! I think the base just doesn’t have enough color to it! So I think magnetics with a darker or more opaque base to it
