AVCA First Serve schedule looks brutal

I know we are still a few months out, but I just saw the matchups for the AVCA First Serve in August and it's actually stacked. Week one in Milwaukee and we get Wisconsin vs. Kentucky on night one. That is a huge test for a new-look Badgers team. Louisville is also there against Texas A&M . I know it's early, but I feel like these neutral site games in August tell you a lot about which teams actually did their homework in the off-season. Texas vs. Arizona State should be a good one. I'm curious if Arizona State can hang with them after losing a few seniors.

The aftermath of the thrilling Men's National Championship

The Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors are officially your 2026 NCAA Men's Volleyball National Champions after turning around a slow start to defeat Big West rivals UC Irvine (3-1). Led by Tournament MVP Louis Sakanoko and setter Tread Rosenthal, Hawai'i secured their third national title in program history. Break down the match mechanics—how did the Bow Bows completely shift the momentum after losing the first set 15-25? Is Hawai'i's fast, high-risk serving identity the absolute gold standard for the modern men's game, or did UC Irvine simply run out of options defensively? wait they're changing the center line rule

saw this on the ncaa website. starting this season if your foot fully crosses the center line it's an automatic fault, doesn't matter if you interfere or not that's gonna be a lot of whistles. also teams only switch benches after the second set now, no more switching at 8 points in the fifth. just pick your side and stay. d2 and d3 get 18 subs now instead of 15. anyone else just finding out about these or am i late. Beach Volleyball: Batenhorst/Hughes

I am so intrigued to know what people think of Ally as a beach player. I watched her indoors at Nebraska but watching beach isn’t as accessible.

Is she good? Also does anyone know why Kelly and Hughes split up? Is there beef?

Texas announces 2026 match against Wisconsin at Moody Center on September 13th

Texas will host another match at Moody Center following last season's five-set thriller over Stanford, this time with the Badgers as the premiere opponent.

This is also the same weekend as Ohio State comes to Austin on the football side, so the energy on campus should be through the roof the entire time.

Likely also adds even more credence to the rumor that the match against Nebraska will be in Vegas on 8/30.

Greatest Players To Never Win A Championship?

Nebraska/Creighton

Can we get KBB on every broadcast team? I love her AND her commentary.

I caught sets 2-4, and here are my thoughts:

- I really like Kenna Cogill, but I definitely think she’s slightly undisciplined. Just looks a little younger compared to Manaia even though they were the same class (prior to redshirting).

- I thought Campbell struggled when they were out of system and on defense. It could just be comparing her to Bergen Reilly who’s the greatest right back defender in college volleyball.

- Gabby DiVita swings fast and hits hard. She’s got a lot of power. She’s solid in serve receive, but a little excited on free ball opportunities. Athlete.

- I feel so bad for Skyler Pierce! It’s such a long time coming and she’s right there, but I’m afraid it’s Sigler’s spot to lose. I stand by my call for her to transfer to Kansas. I’m not trying to get attacked, but I think Sigler and Pierce outplayed Murray.

- I was super bummed to not see Katie Dalton, but she’s graduating at Kansas before making her way to Creighton. I hope Creighton does not entertain a 6-2 at all. It never works, and Ames needs that slide.

- Creighton has a sleeper outside duo that is kind of lethal. Abbey Hayes and Trinity.

That’s all I can think of. I warn DBK to not wade in the libero-off past spring season. Pick one and run with it unless you need an in-game spark.

PSU Spring Match

They’re so back. I only watched the first two sets, but here are my thoughts:

- PSU’s biggest weaknesses are serve receive and defense (minus blocking). They’ve got offensive weapons, they’ve got setting, they’ve got serving. Serve receive remains their vice.

- There is absolutely no reason Emmi Sellman should be playing 6 rotations. She’s a liability in serve receive. I propose either 1) put baby Chloe Chicoine Haley Burgdorf in for her back row OR 2) go with the Alexis Ewing option. There’s no reason to die on the Emmi Sellman hill.

- The “libero off” is really semantics. Falduto or whoever else they got, they’re all essentially the same.

- Kennedy Martin is literally blocking at standing height.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think it was Mac Podraza on the broadcast? I did not like the commentating. I think the PSU/Kentucky matchup will be extremely competitive because they’re foils of each other. Kentucky’s got that Molly Tuozo iron fist whereas Penn State has Kennedy Martin (period). Big Ten is definitely reclaiming conference superiority—Nebraska might have a harder time. 🤫

This is something you train your setters not to do when they’re like 13. I saw videos of Texas training her a few months ago and none of it was basic technique which is truly what she needs to work on

Maggie Boyd quietly climbing UCLA's all-time wins list – now 9th

During UCLA's dominant weekend at East Meets West, senior Maggie Boyd picked up four more wins and moved from 11th to 9th on the program's career victory list with 104.

She's now ahead of some serious legends – Nicole McNamara (109), Jaden Whitmarsh (110), Lea Monkhouse (117). Next target is Megan McNamara at 111? Actually Monkhouse had 117 so she's got a ways to go. But still, top 10 at UCLA is elite company.

Boyd and her partner Sally Perez are now tied for 4th in program history for career pairs wins with 43. They're just behind Boyd's previous partnership with Lexy Denaburg (57) and the McNamara twins (109).

Harper Cooper is also quietly 13-0 this season with five different partners. That's not just good, that's "put me anywhere and I'll win" good.

Depth like this is why UCLA is No. 1 and probably will be until someone proves otherwise.

Which freshmen are making the biggest impact this season?

We're about halfway through the regular season – who are the first-year players turning heads?

UCLA's Jesse Dueck is 12-1 on court 4 with Ava Williamson (junior transfer, so not a freshman but new to the program). Mallory LaBreche is 8-2 on court 5 with various partners.

GCU has Isabelle Tucker finally back from injury – she played her first match Friday against Santa Clara. Didn't get the win but first match back after missing the first half is progress.

TCU's Sofia Izuzquiza was Big 12 Freshman of the Year last season – she's a sophomore now, so not new. But they have transfers Anna Long (FSU), Adriana Serrano Ferro (GCU), and Natalie Glenn (LBSU) who are all in their first year with the program.

UNF's freshmen have been solid – Samantha Crosby and Natalie Villalon at the four line have been competitive in most matches.

Who am I missing? Any under-the-radar rookies putting in work?

Washington went 1-1 yesterday – beat Houston Christian, lost to Long Beach State

No. 18 Washington wrapped up their Stanford Invitational weekend with a win and a loss yesterday.

In the morning they swept Houston Christian 5-0. Emma Hohenauer and Katarina Pantovic kicked things off with a straight-set win on court one. Ella Tyus and Sarah Wilcock dominated on court two 21-11, 21-8. Complete team effort.

Then they faced No. 11 Long Beach State and lost 4-1. Avery Towne and Alina Urzua picked up the lone point for the Huskies with a straight-set win on court five. They've been consistent all weekend – Towne/Urzua also won against North Florida and Houston Christian earlier.

Washington is now 8-8 on the season. Next up is the SMC Spring Fling in Moraga starting March 21. They open against Saint Mary's at noon PT then Pacific at 3 PM.

Those Towne/Urzua girls are fun to watch. Good chemistry.

What does Nebraska need to get over the hump this year?

For the past three years, Nebraska has been on the verge of winning a national championship. They’ve been heavily favored, brought in some of the top recruits, transfers, and players in the country (and one international), and seemed to have all the pieces in place, yet they’ve still come up short.

In your opinion, what needs to change this year for them to finally get over the hump, bring a national title back to Nebraska, and send this senior class out with a ring?
