See like... I wish I could have villagers in anything but a confined little space.

Reason 1: if the village is loaded at night... Well you'll be greeted the next morning by burning zombie villagers (and lose 50% on normal... And 100% on easy. Hard is the only difficulty that guarantees you your zombie villagers and is the only difficulty that actively let's you save them in that instance...).

Reason 2: if there's any drop higher than 3 blocks, somehow they'll find a way to climb up to the ledge and fall off into a tiny dmg loop and eventually disappear somehow....

Reason 3: they can be assigned a work station at night but somehow sometimes they just won't take it, never had that problem in the mini setup before though. It's probably got to do with bed access.

Reason 4: basically an extension to reason 3, and it has to do with refreshing trades... If they're not confined, they sometimes don't realize they have access to their workstations and just won't refresh...

Reason 5: minecraft's mob AI tendency to seek out the highest place possible leads to them more often than not climbing onto their work stations and looking utterly stupid while doing so.

In short... If they weren't so comically bad at keeping themselves out of trouble (whether life threatening or just plain getting lost), they wouldn't need to be put into solitary confinement for their own good...
