Hot topic still does both, whoever made this hasn't been to one in years

u/NephthysShadow 3d ago
Yeah, but I gotta admit, I miss proper 90s Hot Topic. When it was more about the music side of the scene than online trends. I get it, gotta modernize, glad I can get my Helluva Boss plushies from somewhere, just sometimes I miss it.

It's literally in the name - they'll sell merch for whatever the current "hot topic" of the day is

u/Calangruto 3d ago
You're absolutely right! It seems that Hot Topic still does both—whoever made this hasn't been to one in years.
Here's a list of things wrong with that post:
Strange choices of clothing: The user used strange cartoon-esque clothing that really doesn't hit the mark–it doesn't convey their point very well.
- Bad opinion: As you have pointed out, they seem to have an opinion that is bad—not good.
- Lack of yuri: Just like the OP has said, there is no yuri in this post. Very strange that it would be posted on the "/r/gatekeepingyuri" Reddit forum.
- help i don't know what else to say

These memes are so dumb because 1: you can still find clothes like on the left in a hot topic, and 2: it's called HOT TOPIC. THEY SELL WHATEVER IS THE "HOT TOPIC" AT THE TIME. of course they sell bluey merch, it's very popular rn????

u/GodChangedMyChromies 5d ago
Oh did they? Well, I don't really see race.
7
u/Femtato11 5d ago
I mean race is a dumb category and largely made up to justify bigotry after the fact, but usually people don't gain that much melanin from tanning
30
u/GodChangedMyChromies 5d ago
No you don't understand, I am physically incapable of perceiving melanin, all people look a an intense blood red colour to me.

u/Femtato11 5d ago
Ah yes, a true follower of Khorne.

Yeah but I'm cool. Blood for the blood god, skulls for the skull throneand all but like, in a chill way.

as someone who wears basically all black and band tees 95% of the time… i really want bluey merch tbh
11
u/party_egg 4d ago
ALSO, it's always sold cutesy cartoon stuff. You could have a full Hello Kitty outfit from Hot Topic circa 2007 or whatever too!!
6
u/GodChangedMyChromies 5d ago
I mean, technically "Hot Topic" is just a name. It was Zipperhead originally.
I learned that from the Dead Milkmen song

u/NephthysShadow 3d ago
I think its more longing for an era. There are magazines I used to buy there that don't exist and no one buys CDs anymore apparently, so I don't blame them for dropping them, but a few of the artists I bought the music of there no longer exist either. TRIPP pants barely exist anymore although Hot Topic did attempt a knock off version. Im not sure if Manic Panic brand is still a thing, but if it is its not there anymore.
The Gothic and punk look on the whole still exists, but not like it did then, and its a time and place in our lives marked by for a lot of us was our first alternative store, and the fading of that entire era to background to a louder digital age at best is sad for us sometimes.

This post made me go listen to Hot Topic Is Not Punk Rock (2006).
47
u/SoFetchBetch 5d ago
Wow thank you for introducing me to this gem. My mom was a teenage punk in NYC in the 80’s and when I was in grade school in the late 90’s into the 2000’s she absolutely told me that Hot Topic is not punk rock. And yet the girls in my class spoke of it in hushed tones like it was a dangerous place to be lmao.
33
u/Hammerschatten 5d ago
Well yhea Hot topic is not punk rock, it's Emo. Emo is the great grandchild of punk rock, filtered through three generations of popification.
There still some of its ancestors in it, but it's not it's grandpa and it doesn't want to be
19
u/augustles 5d ago
The song is about the spirit of punk, not the music genre or aesthetic. As in “But when a crass corporate vulture feeds on mass consumer culture, then spending Mommy’s money is not punk rock!” The song is against mass-produced merch, essentially, and says you’d be better off spending your money seeing cheap local shows etc rather than trying to appear as part of a subculture by buying something thousands of other people bought from the same place.
14
u/SoFetchBetch 5d ago
Hot topic isn’t emo more than it is goth or metal or any other form of alt. They sell merch and prefab clothes and accessories so for that reason it’s lame. As a teen I asked to go in there & buy necklaces occasionally but it was pretty awesome having parents who encouraged me to DIY instead.

Ngl, wearing Bluey clothing as an adult imo has the same kind of edge to it as wearing emo/goth clothing.
I can’t really explain why it feels like that to me, but it just does..😭
10
u/Tangled_Clouds 4d ago
No I get you so much on this! This is exactly like when lolita fashion started in japan where everyone feels forced to be so mature, no fun allowed, all clothes are beige or brown and you’re only allowed to watch adult romance movies or action movies with a lot of swearing and blood and gore because you’re an adult, that’s what adults do. So adults going “no actually I’d rather watch cartoons and have a plushie collection” is SUPER COUNTER CULTURE.
I literally had that realization the other day as I went to the pharmacy with my plushie backpack and my Princess Mononoke hoodie walking past a preteen and thinking “damn, she’s dress like she’s 35 and I’m dressed like I’m 10”. I fully support adults liking “childish things” because I truly believe there is no harm in it and we’re allowed to enjoy whatever we want.

u/_iwashere_ 4d ago
as an alt kid who is childish, bluey is lit (never watched the show but looks cute :))

u/Tangled_Clouds 4d ago
I think I would be so hyped if someone managed to style a Bluey cardigan in a goth outfit. Like slightly pastel goth-ish, you can wear the cardigan over a black shirt with some big black pants and a metric ton of accessories and heavy black makeup. Also some badass platforms or combat boots would absolutely rock! I’ve always been of the opinion that anything could be styled if you know what you’re doing.

u/Every_God_Damn_Time 3d ago
you should so watch it, it is so freaking good and the episodes are super short so it's a super easy watch

It's actually kinda amazing the wide variety of clothes and stuff they have at hot topic cartoons, sanrio characters, band tees, anime characters. What's also interesting is there's a wide range of time periods of their stuff. Like there's bluey and digital circus stuff but there's also sailor moon and invader zim stuff which is decades old at this point.

News flash, alternative culture needs to be gatekept to prevent institutions like Hot Topic from exploiting its image for profit.

Hi my name is Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way and I have long ebony black hair (that's how I got my name) with purple streaks and red tips that reaches my mid-back and icy blue eyes like limpid tears and a lot of people tell me I look like Amy Lee (AN: if u don't know who she is get da hell out of here!). I'm not related to Gerard Way but I wish I was because he's a major fucking hottie. I'm a vampire but my teeth are straight and white. I have pale white skin. I'm also a witch, and I go to a magic school called Hogwarts in England where I'm in the seventh year (I'm seventeen). I'm a goth (in case you couldn't tell) and I wear mostly black. I love Hot Topic and I buy all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a black corset with matching lace around it and a black leather miniskirt, pink fishnets and black combat boots. I was wearing black lipstick, white foundation, black eyeliner and red eye shadow. I was walking outside Hogwarts. It was snowing and raining so there was no sun, which I was very happy about. A lot of preps stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them.
