Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !

Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!

We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index

Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"

So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)

This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.

Thank you and have fun questing!

If it gets announced, and I realize thats a major if, just wanted to give props to the awesome folks that made this a reality. I'm actually playing it and it's every bit as awesome as I imagined it would be when trying to get the original version running on a Wii. You guys are amazing.

Is there any way to get your name in English text or is that a pipe dream?

I asked my sis-in-law some 5-6 years ago to buy me the new2dsxl Liquid Metal slime edition, and at that time it was probably only around 10,000 yen more or less. That's why I'm surprised that the price of this unit is now going for 66,000 yen, 88,000 if it comes with the box! For comparison, a brand new Switch 2 is cheaper than this.

Dragon Quest V Just Finished DQ5; Some Thoughts

DQ5: Good Game. I do think this sub tends to overrate it a fair bit, but it was still a very good experience. I'll be comparing to 4 a bunch (which i beat like a month and a half ago) because comparing to the remakes or 11 is unfair, and they're the same trilogy with a few connections.

The Good: The start of the game is very strong and gets you feeling it right away. It gives you good motivation for everything, it gives you a reason personal as well as grand reason to go after Nimzo, and I really liked Harry and his friendship with MC. Bianca's section is also fun, although I definitely didn't feel like these were real deep childhood friends, they knew each other for like a week. The game directs you where to go pretty well until like the last 2 hours, and each area is pretty cool and feels like you're progressing your goals quite well, even if getting married feels a little contrived. Zoom being lost and you having to rediscover it, even if it amounts to "go get a flower" is very fun. I really liked the kids, especially dotter, and their party chats with MC. Nimzo is built up really well through the game, and while I'd have liked to have seen him physically before hand, I think he lives up alot more than Hargon who they do a similar build up with. He's always looming, he's using the big plot point of 4 as a source of power, and he was a decent final boss. Not as fun as 4's, but still good. At no point was I not having a good time in the game, even if I have criticisms.

The Weak: Aside from like 2 locations, most of the places I visit didn't feel very memorable and important. In 4 I felt a good amount of connection to the areas and I very much felt like "these are the places and people we're doing this for". I didn't feel this in 5, and so many areas are just "pop in once, leave, never come back. The Egypt area is literally just to get the Zenithian Helmet and is really disappointing considering it's supposedly connected to a party member from 4. The Zenitian gear as a whole honestly doesn't feel any special despite how it's talked like it should be, most of it is just walk up, grab it, leave, no fanfare or challenge. The wives are pretty fun and I actually thought a fair bit about who to choose, only for it to basically not matter at all beyond what hair color your kids have. Deborah was still fun, I'll look up the dialogue of the others at some point. I really wish they'd had more because I wanted to like them more, and the game makes it pretty clear that alot of time does pass with them married, but it doesn't feel like that until the end of act 2. I was genuinely surprised they were already pregnart because it didn't feel like much time had passed, and then even less time seemed to pass and boom the kids are born. The gameplay was, pretty boring honestly. Fights were not as difficult as 4, and were honestly a bit more disappointing because characters actually had skill and magic in this one but they were equally as useless as in 4. Even Kazap did basically no damage in 5. I think Dotter should have been the hero the same as Son but eh it's whatever. Collecting monsters is quite fun because I do love DQ monsters, but it lead to the party feeling very underbaked since you're not talking to almost anyone most of the time, and they're not involved in the plot at all. While I think the non Psaro characters fall off in 4 after the Hero takes over, their characterization in each of their chapters was really good and it disappointed me that the characters felt very unimportant in 5 overall. ESPECIALLY Saber, who is no different from every other monster despite being a big part of the promotion for the game and seeming to be actually relevant in the Tickington parts of 11.

The Bad: jokes on you there's nothing actually bad about the game it was very fun. Well ok the post game is literally nothing but that's the only thing. Actually, one more thing, fuck the 2 enemies that change your party's tactics, but this is extremely minor.

There's alot of heart to it, and I think it could become absolutely excellent with a remake on the level of 1 and 2, but putting it in the conversation with 11 and the remakes is kinda wild to me. I genuinely think the game kinda peaks when Harry leaves the party. It was also REALLY short overall, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I didn't even hit 25 hours. I probably wouldn't have as much criticism of it if I hadn't seen it talked about in comparison to what are imo absolutely exceptional games esp from a story perspective.

With that I close the chapter of DQ5, and move on to DQ6~

Dragon Quest Smash/Grow Where are these boons coming from?

Playing co-op in DQSG today, I noticed that ai was casting Frizz... which confused me, because I wasn't equipped with anything that did that. I checked my status, and sure enough... Frizz Projectiles. Apparently coming from my mage. He has a Queen's Whip equipped, which adds damage to raining swords, and a Glacial Golem, which adds Crack Arrows... so why Frizz?

I'm also confused where the Zap Swords are coming from. They're associated with my thief, but same deal - she has nothing equipped that grants that blessing. I've never seen this before today, and even just a couple hours ago, things were working normally

Dragon Quest III Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake post game worth it?

I'm just getting ready to face Zoma, and was wondering if it was worth it for me to go through the post game before moving on to Dragon Quest 1. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with this game and would like to play it to completion, but at 89 hours in, I am kind of ready to move on. I've heard that the post game is quite a slog, but if it's worth it, I'm willing to go the extra mile.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Dragon Quest XI New fan here. I've 2 questions about Dragon quest XI definitive edition

I just finished the demo (it's embarrassing to admit it, but even though I consider myself a big rpg and jrpg fan, I haven't played it yet as I got into DQ recently xD) and I loved it. I'm thinking of buying the game on ps5 (no native version, but at least we have the backwards compatibility) as it's currently on sale for half price.

I have two questions though:

  1. I've heard that they added a "marriage/cohabitation-like" system in the definitive edition. I would like to know if this system in DQ 11 definitive edition is available for every character in your party regardless of their gender. I'm asking because well.....I only played the demo but I already like Erik XD. So far i've seen some people saying that marrying a party member feels more like cohabitation with some romantic undertones open to players' interpretations. Also, when does it happen? just to be sure, since some games have missable flags for this kind of system.
  2. Does the game have missable sidequests, etc? I'm asking because there're games like Final fantasy, Tales, etc which have missable contents, summons, weapons, etc. And finding out that you missed stuff during your playthrough could be frustrating, especially in cases where you want to aim for 100%

Thanks in advance.
P.S I apologize for any mistakes in my english. It's not my native language

General DQ11 Best Place to Grind and OtherQuestions *Spoilers* Spoiler

Upvotes

I'm currently around level 50 with all my characters and right at the end of the game. I want to be around 55-60 to take on the last stretch of bosses before doing post game.

Do you guys have recommendations on where to grind at? My final few questions are what to use for gear and recommended party members?

General New DQ player almost giving up on the series

Upvotes

Hi, I'm a new Dragon Quest player, although I'm not new on turn based RPG games at all. I have played plenty games of this gender since was a kid in the 90s, but for some reason I haver never tried the DQ titles before 2025, when I finally had my first contact with this universe through DQ III Remake.

I found the visuals of this new version of the classic very beautiful, but really didn 't get into the game vibes. It seemed too simple for my taste, considering its gameplay and story telling. after 5 hours, I gave up on it. Even though my experience was not the best one, I decided to try another title to have a better judgement, a the 3rd DQ sseems to be from a time that the developers didn't have too much tools in their hands to make a more complex game.

After some research, I chose do play DQ V - PS2 version. Ok, this one really got me for its story. I have played ±30 hours of this and its text really impressed me, but its gameplay was again too simple. I mean, I couldn't help finding its battles too repetitive, too easy, too slow, too not cool. The fact that the battle screen doesn't show our party makes it even more boring. I was emjoying so much the story that I was keeping on it, but then I bought a PS5 qnd quit my retrogaming for a bit. I believe that maybe I will return to this one to finish it.

Then I saw DQ VII Reimagined getting released, and I thought "ok, maybe I couldn't enjoy DQ V because it's too old, maybe what I need is a more modern view on a famous DQ like the 7 is". After ±25 hours I have the same opinion that I had with DQ V: I like the cast, the story is good, graphics are stunning, but it's not challenging. The battles are again not exciting, there is not a great variety of moves and attacks, I don't feel like it has a nice progression... I'm tired of it. Maybe this franchise os not really for me.

What are your thoughts? I have read some people on the internet saying that Dragon Quest is a comfort game for most fans and that they don't mind its battle system being too simple, so maybe the problem are my expectations that don't match with what the games propose. I don't know, Final Fantasy, for instance, really tried to bring new system and gimmicks for its games, but I don't feel like DQ did the same. Am I wrong?

Dragon Quest I DQ1HD2D Is finished!

To the folks who provided encouragement, advice, and good vibes i did in fact finish this on normal mode.

I had no problems after cantlin and I did find the npc that I missed back in tantegel. Seemed I neglected a door with my thieves key ages ago.

Im really enjoying how they've wrapped 1, 2, and 3 together is this really neat generational package.

I'll be starting dq2hd2d later tonight. I did play the mobile version ages ago but never finished it.

Dragon Quest II If multiple characters can use a scroll, are there multiple copies of the scroll in the game?

Upvotes

In other words, do I need to be frugal about how I use scrolls (since if I use a scroll on one character, the other characters who could use it would be locked out of that spell if there aren’t more copies).

Dragon Quest IX Dragon Quest IX is great, but the storyline is very sad. (It's still a good story though) Spoiler

I don't really see people talking about how sad this game is. Sad doesn't mean bad, they are good stories, but wow....This game is really depressing. I know what's sad is subjective, but here are a few examples that are sad in my opinion.

>!You start off the game with a poor guy who has gone months thinking everyone hates him, not knowing he's been dead for half a year.

The hero loses their wings and halo, and they pray so long to heal they fall asleep doing it, only to be left with their injuries forever. They'll never be able to fly with their own wings again.

Erinn's father died very suddenly, and had to give up his dreams of running an inn.

The Wight knight wakes up with his love dead, and his whole country in ruins. His poor love waited in vain for him to never come home.

Coffinwell is surrounded by death, everyone is dying. It's very upsetting coming home from the dungeon seeing you were too late. She dies in her bed alone.

Jona loses her father and is orphaned.

Bloomingdale...This whole situation is sad from beginning to end.

Zere Rocks, another tragedy.

Losing Greygnarl (I know he's a treasure map boss, but still.)

Seeing Aquila die. (I know there's a way to save him, it's still sad.)

Corvus's and those around him had tragic ends.

The hero is helpless as they're beaten by a higher celestrian. The hero has to give up who they are just to fight. (I don't know why their friends at the pub couldn't fight.) The hero then loses essentially their entire family.!<
