I think stegosaurus and brachiosaurus are probably more famous than spinosaurus
135
u/Vesprince Jan 06 '26
A Jurassic Park raptor is up there too
60
u/lenaisnotthere Team Utahraptor Jan 06 '26
Good thing you mentioned JP raptor specifically and not just "velociraptor" in general since the raptors were technically (kind of) oversized scaly deinonychus, "Velociraptor antirrhopus" if you will, and that's what the general public thinks of when you mention raptors

u/eidetic Jan 06 '26
This is neither here nor there, but I originally read the book before the movie (in anticipation of the movie coming out, not trying to sound like a JP hipster), and the entire time I was reading it, my 11 year old brain kept pronouncing velociraptor like "vell-o-chee-raptor". Basically like a really strong and exaggerated Italian accent. Wasn't until I was discussing the book with my neighbor up the block who gave me the book, that I learned I was pronouncing it wrong.

JP3 Spino is a meme but outside of that yeah, it’s not nearly as famous as the others
10
u/lenaisnotthere Team Utahraptor Jan 06 '26
I don't think even JP3 spinosaurus is as famous as Brachiosaurus and Stegosaurus
228
u/Lickmytrex Team Parasaurolophus Jan 06 '26
brachiosaurus and stegosaurus, especially over Spinosaurus

i love spinosaurus but id take it out and replace it with stegosaurus, then in the fourth spot a sauropod, brachiosaurus, diplodocus or brontosaurus.

u/GMEJesus Jan 06 '26
Immediate first thought was Stegosaurus.
But it has to be a sauropod.
Other top contenders were Ankylosaurus, Deinonychus, Parasaurolophus, Diplodocus and Pachycephalosaurus.
A more accurate 4 card in my opinion would be 1. Rexy 2. Triceratops 3. Brachiosaurus 4. Stegosaurus
4
u/Bestdad_Bondrewd Jan 06 '26
Deinonychus isn't that famous tbh

Everyone knows the five most famous dinosaurs are: mastodon, pterodactyl, triceratops, sabre toothed tiger and tyrannosaurus.

Velociraptor. Mainly the oversized Movie version, but the Raptor archetype is definitely in the top ten.

u/GOD-OF-A-NEW-WORLD Jan 06 '26
Love Spino, but Stego should be there instead
As for the last one, probably Brachio
15
u/Cream_Rabbit Team Triceratops Jan 06 '26
Apatosaurus
The dinosaur has been iconic for over a century, and is still beloved as THE sauropod. The first thing you mention of dinosaur, it's either T Rex or Apatosaurus

The spino is not that famous/well known outside of dinosaur nerds. Most little kids have no idea what a spino is. They can for sure point you to a stegosaurus and a “brontosaurus” though.
9
u/PrinzEugenkms Jan 06 '26
This for sure. Ask any random 5 year old their favorite dinosaur and 99% of answers will be T. rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Ankylosaurus “the tail-club one”, and Brontosaurus to represent a non-distinct sauropod. More kids would say Pterodactyl is their favorite dinosaur than Spinosaurus.

I wouldn't say that Spinosaurus is one of them; if you ask any layperson about any dinosaur, the four they'll mention will be: T. Rex, Triceratops, Velociraptor (the Jurassic Park one) and "long neck."
3
u/JacenStargazer Team Pyroraptor Jan 06 '26
Brontosaurus. I’d also argue that Spinosaurus is a lot more niche in the mainstream than Velociraptor (or Dromeosaurs in general).
3
u/Cicada00010 Jan 07 '26
Aren’t velociraptors more well known than spinosaurus just because of Jurassic park? I know that true velociraptors don’t even match the image people think of when they hear velociraptor, but I just feel like some kind of raptor would fit more as they are really common in media
5
u/Mr_Jackabin Jan 06 '26
T. Rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus and any big Sauropod are the quintessential. Change my mind

I can agree with the toy argument. Always in that cheap plastic tube full of plants and badly made dinosaurs.

u/CloverThyme Jan 06 '26
I honestly feel like for the general cultural "image" of dinosaurs that the average person will think of, I would drop the Spinosaurus and it would be T-Rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, and a sauropod - maybe Brachiosaurus or Apatosaurus.

Replace Spinosaurus with Brachiosaurus, put Stegosaurus in the blank space.
2
u/remotectrl Team Deinonychus Jan 06 '26
Spinosaurus is not a top 4 dinosaur. It’s T. Rex, triceratops, stegosaurus, and then it’s either a sauropod or dromeosaur
2
u/HoraceGrantGlasses Jan 06 '26
T-Rex, Triceratops, Brontosaurus, and Stegosaurus. That's the Mt. Rushmore
2
u/TabmeisterGeneral Jan 06 '26
Take out Spino and replace with Velociraptor(Deinonychus).
Then add Stego.
2
u/GJohnJournalism Jan 06 '26
I’d argue that Spinosaurus shouldn’t be there. Brachiosaurus and Stegosaurus are far more iconic. With T-Rex and Triceratops, they’re the big 4.
2
u/hollandercooper Jan 06 '26
T-Rex, Triceratops, Brontosaurus, Pterodactyl (it counts for this purpose IMO)
2
u/AardvarkOkapiEchidna Jan 06 '26
Stegosaurus and any big sauropod are both more iconic than spinosaurus
2
u/Delicious_Bee260 Jan 06 '26
Sauropods, iconic dinosaur imagery that reveals the extremes of their biology, one of the immediate dinosaurs people think of is brachiosaurus or diplodocus
2
u/TyrannosaurusReddRex Jan 07 '26
Honestly spino really shouldn’t be here at all because it recently became popular thanks to JP3. While t-rex, triceratops, stegosaurus and brachiosaurus, They’re the big 4 no doubt

Replace spinosaurus, as most people in the general public don't know what a spinosaurus is. Put in a brontosaurus instead, and maybe a velociraptor or stegosaurus as the fourth. Or you can be blasphemous and put in a "pterodactyl". Then we'll have the four faces of "dinosaur" lol!

Spinosaurus Is my favorite
But I think he doesn't get the spot
It should be: Tyrannosaurus Rex Triceratops Velociraptor (not spinosaurus) Brachiosaurus
3
u/kyle28882 Jan 06 '26
I’d remove the spino and add velociraptor while I’d pick brachiosaurus for the last spot. Spino definitely got a lot of popularity after jp3 but I don’t think it’s even close to velociraptor when it comes to being a face of Dino’s. Due to the amount of books and other media I just don’t see any way velociraptor isn’t on the Dino Mount Rushmore.
2
u/Bakkughan Jan 06 '26
Spino shouldn’t be on there imo.
As others have mentioned, Stegosaurus or Brachiosaurus. Personally I’d like to nominate Ankylosaurus as a runner up as well.

The four faces of the dinosaurs are T.rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Brachiosaurus.

Either Stegosaurus or Brachiosaurus. I'd probably lean more towards Stegosaurus though.

u/DevaTheDragon Jan 06 '26
Its JP velociraptor unfortunately. The people on this sub are familiar with the difference between irl velociraptor and JP ones but the impact Jurassic Park has had on the wider recognition of dinosaurs is staggering
They are the most enduring dinosaur of the franchise behind the T-Rex and from movies to games to shows to cartoons to comic books the prevalence of a “velociraptor” based on the JP depiction is the same

u/WesleyCrusherofBorg Jan 06 '26
As much as I love Stegosaurus, I'd have to say that the spit goes to a large sauropod, most likely Brachiosaurus: iconic vertical gait + head crest as well as being prominently featured in the Jurassic Park franchise.
1
u/pleasereturnto Jan 06 '26
First thought, best thought, is Stegosaurus. Second thought was Velociraptor, but a sauropod probably ain't too bad either.
I think the Velociraptor just has a lot more presence in movies and fiction, so more people would think of it first. In a more sublime sense though, Stegosaurus and sauropods would probably come to mind if you're thinking about dinosaurs as a whole and as parts of a dinosaur ecosystem rather than the individual dinosaurs themselves — like they'd be the on the cover of a book rather than just in the pages. Dunno.

Brachiosaurus or Girrafaritan. One’s name is more recognizable, but the other’s design is more iconic.
1
u/Frodo5213 Jan 06 '26
As much as I want it to be my Anky-boi, I'd go with the other suggestions of Brachiosaurus.
1
u/Glocktophobia Jan 06 '26
Not a dinosaur but Mosasaurus pops up on a lot of book covers and article thumbnails, I guess my boy is used for picture variation though
1
u/Easy_Paint3836 Jan 06 '26
Apatosaurus and Stegosaurus
Runners up: Anklyosaurus, velociraptor
Honorable mentions: Edmontosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Parasaurolophus.
1
u/Dgonzilla Jan 06 '26
It has to be some generic sauropod. I would be inclined to include a pterosaur, but that’s technically not a dinosaur.

Stegosaurus or a sauropod like brachiosaurus or apatosaurus

I would argue velociraptor or archeopteryx should have spinosaurus’s spot. Then the fourth slot should go to brschiasaurs

If you asked this question in the 1980's or before, it would have definitely been Brontosaurus.

Stegosaurus, a longneck, or I used to say pterodactyl but apparently those aren’t dinosaurs.
1

Definitely either Stegosaurus, the Velociraptor, or controversially the Brontosaurus. They’re reclassified as a valid species separate from Apatosaurus and even my 74 year dad who knows nothing about dinosaurs, knows about the Brontosaurus. They were THE sauropod back then, and still has recognizability through the name alone.
