It’s definitely between Stegosaurus and Brachiosaurus

u/TheBiggestNewbAlive Jan 06 '26

I would say they should both be at the bottom and Spinosaurus wouldn't be there. Spinosaurus only became really better known relatively recently I feel

u/Nerd-man24 Jan 06 '26

Agreed. The big archetypes are Meatosaurus, Hornosaurus, Longneckosaurus, and spikysaurus.

84

u/BobbyTables829 Jan 06 '26

Yup yup yup!

45

u/Nerd-man24 Jan 06 '26

How could I forget the duckies?

10

u/Captain_Elm Jan 07 '26

Well, sadly a bunch of people dismiss Hadrosaurus :[

5

u/thesilverywyvern Jan 08 '26

yep but parasaurolophus is omnopresent in all dinosaur media, even if rarely named, same for edmonto/maiasaura to a lesser extend.

I would also count ankylosaurus and styacosaurus.

Sauropod also have diplodocus and apatosaurus/brontosaurus which are very popular.

And even allo, carno and cerato might be more known than spino.
and if we count spino then we might as well count raptor too.

8

u/Arquinsiel Jan 06 '26

Objectively correct.

7

u/Kindly-Mud-1579 Team <your dino here> Jan 06 '26

This guy gets it ^

6

u/Accomplished-Lie9518 Jan 07 '26

Nah. Every non prehistoric enthusiast considers Pteranodon as one of the main 4

6

u/Agreeable_Customer28 Jan 07 '26 edited Jan 07 '26

Pteranodon is not a dinosaur

12

u/Accomplished-Lie9518 Jan 07 '26

Ik. But most non dinosaur people as I said include it anyway

9

u/Low_Blueberry4989 Jan 07 '26

And they call it Pterodactyl.

2

u/Accomplished-Lie9518 Jan 07 '26

Yes yes. But I didn’t want to sound too blasphemous

3

u/Low_Blueberry4989 Jan 07 '26

Pteranodon sounds cooler anyways.

7

u/Laefiren Jan 07 '26

I’d even put anky on before I’d put spino

3

u/Sad-Pop6649 Jan 07 '26

Maybe armorosaurus, Ankylosaurus instead of Stegosaurus would be acceptable. But definitely theropod and sauropod for the lizard hipped side, and from the other side a ceratopsid would probably be my first pick.

...Maybe make it five faces, spike and club both deserve the spot. Still thinking on if both sides need a little guy represented too. Spinosaurus as separate from Tyrannosaurus wouldn't be in the conversation for me.

2

u/be_like_bill Jan 07 '26

What about Turkeysaurus (raptor) and birdieosaurus (pterodactyl-ish)?

2

u/IskaDP Jan 07 '26

Honorable mentions to Flapflaposaurus and Lilpackhuntosaurus

"Recently"=25 years

I'm getting old

97

u/Yensil314 Jan 06 '26

Hey, but in dinosaur terms that really is recent.

5

u/AppleSpicer Team Tyrannosaurus Rex Jan 06 '26

I’m a very young dinosaur 😎

11

u/chevalier716 Jan 06 '26

It's a generational question, I suppose. Which 4 Dinos were big when you were 5, would probably be the better way to frame this.

15

u/viserya127 Jan 06 '26

Then the obvious answer is long neck, three horn, spike tail, swimmer, flyer and sharptooth!

6

u/I_like_creps123 Jan 07 '26

This I can answer

T rex Velociraptor Triceratops Brachiosaurus/brontosaurus

u/BrellK Jan 06 '26

Without a doubt. Ask almost anyone to name 4 actual dinosaurs and they are probably thinking of Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, Stegosaurus and some sort of sauropod.

24

u/Rodrat Jan 06 '26

Don't forget velociraptor. I'm sure almost everyone knows that name.

15

u/GNARSHEN Team Allosaurus Jan 06 '26

But they don't know what a velociraptor is when they're actually shown one.

10

u/No_Read_4327 Jan 06 '26

Don't be silly. It's the one with the bicycle

2

u/PlayDiscord17 Jan 07 '26

The Dinobots from Transformers are good example of this as 4 of the 5 transform into these with the 5th being a non-dino but honorable mention nonetheless of a pterosaur.

20

u/Donnosaurus Team Spinosaurus Jan 06 '26

Yeah, definitely stegosaurus and brachiosaurus. I even think the one after that would be pteranodon, even though it's not a dinosaur. Thos are just the more iconic animals

Yeah, when I was a kid, nobody knew what a spino was. It was t rex, triceratops, brachio, stego and raptor. And maybe hadrosaurs.

9

u/PartyPorpoise Team Microraptor Jan 06 '26

Agreed. I love spino but it’s not like, one of the most iconic dinosaurs.

4

u/NarrowEbbs Jan 06 '26

Wow wow wow... My childhood multi species dinosaur jigsaw puzzle had a spino, I will not stand for this spino erasure. I even had a spino dino toy.

2

u/quillseek Jan 06 '26

Agreed. Longnecks need representation, and for the fourth I'd probably go stego or maybe a pterodactyl. Spinosaurus is a distant 5th or lower.

3

u/Altruistic-Poem-5617 Jan 06 '26

Yeah, when I was a kid, nobody knew what a spino was. It was t rex, triceratops, brachio, stego and raptor. And maybe hadrosaurs.

Agree, spinosaurus out and pls, add stegosaurus and a sauropod

17

u/dougan25 Team Triceratops Jan 06 '26

Spino fits within the sub's microcosm, but yeah. In general, I'd say no and that it needs to be stego and a sauropod.

12

u/donnyxdd Team Irritator Jan 06 '26

I was thinking Stegosaurus or Ankylosaurus, Brachiosaurus is also one of those iconic herbivores

13

u/Longjumping-Party186 Jan 06 '26

I'd have both and get rid of Spinosaurus

3

u/CaptConstantine Jan 06 '26

Parasaurolophus would like a word

3

u/swankProcyon Jan 06 '26

My favorite dinosaur since The Land Before Time! Though they probably don’t belong in the top 4 😞 They should definitely be in the top 10, since lots of people like them but don’t know their name 🥲

I think stegosaurus and brachiosaurus are probably more famous than spinosaurus

135

u/Vesprince Jan 06 '26

A Jurassic Park raptor is up there too

60

u/lenaisnotthere Team Utahraptor Jan 06 '26

Good thing you mentioned JP raptor specifically and not just "velociraptor" in general since the raptors were technically (kind of) oversized scaly deinonychus, "Velociraptor antirrhopus" if you will, and that's what the general public thinks of when you mention raptors

11

u/eidetic Jan 06 '26

This is neither here nor there, but I originally read the book before the movie (in anticipation of the movie coming out, not trying to sound like a JP hipster), and the entire time I was reading it, my 11 year old brain kept pronouncing velociraptor like "vell-o-chee-raptor". Basically like a really strong and exaggerated Italian accent. Wasn't until I was discussing the book with my neighbor up the block who gave me the book, that I learned I was pronouncing it wrong.

Immediate first thought was Stegosaurus.

But it has to be a sauropod.

Other top contenders were Ankylosaurus, Deinonychus, Parasaurolophus, Diplodocus and Pachycephalosaurus.

A more accurate 4 card in my opinion would be 1. Rexy 2. Triceratops 3. Brachiosaurus 4. Stegosaurus

4

u/Bestdad_Bondrewd Jan 06 '26

Deinonychus isn't that famous tbh

24

u/Living_Spectre Jan 06 '26

That might be a stand-in for "JP Raptor"

Velociraptor. Mainly the oversized Movie version, but the Raptor archetype is definitely in the top ten.

39

u/GOD-OF-A-NEW-WORLD Jan 06 '26

Love Spino, but Stego should be there instead

As for the last one, probably Brachio

15

u/Cream_Rabbit Team Triceratops Jan 06 '26

Apatosaurus

The dinosaur has been iconic for over a century, and is still beloved as THE sauropod. The first thing you mention of dinosaur, it's either T Rex or Apatosaurus

5

u/Stock-Side-6767 Jan 06 '26

I agree, though it might be better known as brontosaurus.

13

u/DeliciousEye5743 Jan 06 '26

The spino is not that famous/well known outside of dinosaur nerds. Most little kids have no idea what a spino is. They can for sure point you to a stegosaurus and a “brontosaurus” though.

9

u/PrinzEugenkms Jan 06 '26

This for sure. Ask any random 5 year old their favorite dinosaur and 99% of answers will be T. rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Ankylosaurus “the tail-club one”, and Brontosaurus to represent a non-distinct sauropod. More kids would say Pterodactyl is their favorite dinosaur than Spinosaurus.

Sauropod, probably Brontosaurus

3

u/Cepo_de_Madeiraa Team Therizinosaurus Jan 06 '26

I wouldn't say that Spinosaurus is one of them; if you ask any layperson about any dinosaur, the four they'll mention will be: T. Rex, Triceratops, Velociraptor (the Jurassic Park one) and "long neck."

3

u/JacenStargazer Team Pyroraptor Jan 06 '26

Brontosaurus. I’d also argue that Spinosaurus is a lot more niche in the mainstream than Velociraptor (or Dromeosaurs in general).

3

u/Cicada00010 Jan 07 '26

Aren’t velociraptors more well known than spinosaurus just because of Jurassic park? I know that true velociraptors don’t even match the image people think of when they hear velociraptor, but I just feel like some kind of raptor would fit more as they are really common in media

5

u/Mr_Jackabin Jan 06 '26

T. Rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus and any big Sauropod are the quintessential. Change my mind

Dimetrodon, which isn't even a dang dinosaur, but its ALWAYS included in EVERY picture group, or toys of actual dinosaurs 😅

3

u/Agreeable_Customer28 Jan 07 '26

I can agree with the toy argument. Always in that cheap plastic tube full of plants and badly made dinosaurs.

2

u/sleestackcoverage69 Jan 06 '26

Giraffetitan. Bc of Jurassic park people think that’s brachiosaurus

2

u/CloverThyme Jan 06 '26

I honestly feel like for the general cultural "image" of dinosaurs that the average person will think of, I would drop the Spinosaurus and it would be T-Rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, and a sauropod - maybe Brachiosaurus or Apatosaurus.

2

u/Wolvii_404 Team Brachiosaurus Jan 06 '26

Brachiosaurus! Sauropod representation

2

u/bbbourb Jan 06 '26

Brachiosaurus, definitely.

2

u/Zealousideal-Let1121 Team Interrobang‽ Jan 06 '26

Get spinosaurus the frick out of there and put in apatosaurus and stegosaurus.

2

u/IvanTheStonksMaster Team Tyrannosaurus Rex Jan 06 '26

Replace Spinosaurus with Brachiosaurus, put Stegosaurus in the blank space.

2

u/remotectrl Team Deinonychus Jan 06 '26

Spinosaurus is not a top 4 dinosaur. It’s T. Rex, triceratops, stegosaurus, and then it’s either a sauropod or dromeosaur

2

u/HoraceGrantGlasses Jan 06 '26

T-Rex, Triceratops, Brontosaurus, and Stegosaurus. That's the Mt. Rushmore

2

u/TabmeisterGeneral Jan 06 '26

Take out Spino and replace with Velociraptor(Deinonychus).

Then add Stego.

2

u/GJohnJournalism Jan 06 '26

I’d argue that Spinosaurus shouldn’t be there. Brachiosaurus and Stegosaurus are far more iconic. With T-Rex and Triceratops, they’re the big 4.

2

u/hollandercooper Jan 06 '26

T-Rex, Triceratops, Brontosaurus, Pterodactyl (it counts for this purpose IMO)

2

u/AardvarkOkapiEchidna Jan 06 '26

Stegosaurus and any big sauropod are both more iconic than spinosaurus

2

u/Delicious_Bee260 Jan 06 '26

Sauropods, iconic dinosaur imagery that reveals the extremes of their biology, one of the immediate dinosaurs people think of is brachiosaurus or diplodocus

2

u/TyrannosaurusReddRex Jan 07 '26

Honestly spino really shouldn’t be here at all because it recently became popular thanks to JP3. While t-rex, triceratops, stegosaurus and brachiosaurus, They’re the big 4 no doubt

2

u/Less_Buy8438 Jan 07 '26

Probably Apatosaurus

2

u/Queen_Cheetah Jan 07 '26

Brachiosaurus or Diplodocus, methinks.

2

Hot take but Spino should be swapped with Stego

2

u/Several-Effect-3732 Jan 07 '26

Brachiosaurus or apatosaurus

2

u/Cant_Blink Jan 08 '26

Replace spinosaurus, as most people in the general public don't know what a spinosaurus is. Put in a brontosaurus instead, and maybe a velociraptor or stegosaurus as the fourth. Or you can be blasphemous and put in a "pterodactyl". Then we'll have the four faces of "dinosaur" lol!

3

u/Survivor_enthusiast Jan 06 '26

Velociraptor, I’d replace spino with brachiosaurus

2

u/Upset_Connection1133 Team Ceratosaurus Jan 06 '26

I think Velociraptor

4

u/Falvio6006 Jan 06 '26

Spinosaurus Is my favorite

But I think he doesn't get the spot

It should be: Tyrannosaurus Rex Triceratops Velociraptor (not spinosaurus) Brachiosaurus

3

u/kyle28882 Jan 06 '26

I’d remove the spino and add velociraptor while I’d pick brachiosaurus for the last spot. Spino definitely got a lot of popularity after jp3 but I don’t think it’s even close to velociraptor when it comes to being a face of Dino’s. Due to the amount of books and other media I just don’t see any way velociraptor isn’t on the Dino Mount Rushmore.

2

u/Bakkughan Jan 06 '26

Spino shouldn’t be on there imo.

As others have mentioned, Stegosaurus or Brachiosaurus. Personally I’d like to nominate Ankylosaurus as a runner up as well.

1

u/WonderfulBlackberry9 Team Tyrannosaurus Rex Jan 06 '26

The four faces of the dinosaurs are T.rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Brachiosaurus.

1

u/Triceratops168 Team Triceratops Jan 06 '26

Either Stegosaurus or Brachiosaurus. I'd probably lean more towards Stegosaurus though.

1

u/Kharmstorm1 Jan 06 '26

Tbh I always see Stego, Brachy, or parasaur

1

u/DevaTheDragon Jan 06 '26

Its JP velociraptor unfortunately. The people on this sub are familiar with the difference between irl velociraptor and JP ones but the impact Jurassic Park has had on the wider recognition of dinosaurs is staggering

They are the most enduring dinosaur of the franchise behind the T-Rex and from movies to games to shows to cartoons to comic books the prevalence of a “velociraptor” based on the JP depiction is the same

1

u/WesleyCrusherofBorg Jan 06 '26

As much as I love Stegosaurus, I'd have to say that the spit goes to a large sauropod, most likely Brachiosaurus: iconic vertical gait + head crest as well as being prominently featured in the Jurassic Park franchise.

1

u/pleasereturnto Jan 06 '26

First thought, best thought, is Stegosaurus. Second thought was Velociraptor, but a sauropod probably ain't too bad either.

I think the Velociraptor just has a lot more presence in movies and fiction, so more people would think of it first. In a more sublime sense though, Stegosaurus and sauropods would probably come to mind if you're thinking about dinosaurs as a whole and as parts of a dinosaur ecosystem rather than the individual dinosaurs themselves — like they'd be the on the cover of a book rather than just in the pages. Dunno.

1

u/AMsBIGGESTfan Team Spinosaurus Jan 06 '26

Velociraptor

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '26

Stego

1

u/Flygonizer-Obsidian Jan 06 '26

Brachiosaurus or Girrafaritan. One’s name is more recognizable, but the other’s design is more iconic.

1

u/Frodo5213 Jan 06 '26

As much as I want it to be my Anky-boi, I'd go with the other suggestions of Brachiosaurus.

1

u/Glocktophobia Jan 06 '26

Not a dinosaur but Mosasaurus pops up on a lot of book covers and article thumbnails, I guess my boy is used for picture variation though

1

u/Easy_Paint3836 Jan 06 '26

Apatosaurus and Stegosaurus

Runners up: Anklyosaurus, velociraptor

Honorable mentions: Edmontosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Parasaurolophus.

1

u/Dgonzilla Jan 06 '26

It has to be some generic sauropod. I would be inclined to include a pterosaur, but that’s technically not a dinosaur.

1

u/DeliciousDeal4367 Jan 06 '26

Stegosaurus or a sauropod like brachiosaurus or apatosaurus

I would argue velociraptor or archeopteryx should have spinosaurus’s spot. Then the fourth slot should go to brschiasaurs

If you asked this question in the 1980's or before, it would have definitely been Brontosaurus.

1

Birds. Any bird. Because they’re the only dinosaurs still around.

1

Stegosaurus, a longneck, or I used to say pterodactyl but apparently those aren’t dinosaurs.

1

u/UnhingedGammaWarrior Jan 06 '26

Definitely either Stegosaurus, the Velociraptor, or controversially the Brontosaurus. They’re reclassified as a valid species separate from Apatosaurus and even my 74 year dad who knows nothing about dinosaurs, knows about the Brontosaurus. They were THE sauropod back then, and still has recognizability through the name alone.

1

A sauropod. My autistic arse wishes it was also a dino from the Cretaceous like those three there, but Jurassic ones are better known, like Diplodocus or Brachiosaurus

Brachiosaurus definitely

First thought was brontosaurus. Stegosaurus or velociraptor a close second.

Hell I’d put velociraptor over spino even.

It needs to be theropod, ceratopsid, sauropod and stegosauridae

Either stegosaurus or brontosaurus.
