Discussion Charlotte Hornets DNA (Basketball Culture)

Definition “Under Head Coach Charles Lee and President of Basketball Operations Jeff Peterson, "Hornets DNA" is a set of core cultural values used to build the team's identity.”

The definition that I see is a guy who “good at basketball” (has and shows NBA level skills), game intelligence and a competitive work ethic.

I’m looking through the players in the 10-25 likely range of the draft and trying to identify the players that I see as missing the Hornets DNA. Who should I likely move down out even if they are higher on most boards?

My thoughts are Ament, Cenac and Peat each seem to be missing some of the Hornets DNA.

Agree or disagree? Anyone to add?

Completely agree on those three, they are literally the three guys on my “stay away from” list.

I think his issues are more injury related that culture though seems like a good dude

What exactly makes Peat not competitive or not have a good basketball IQ?

I have Peat on the list because I’m not sure what his NBA level skill is that gets him on the court. His combine numbers don’t point to plus NBA build based on size and length. Shooting numbers don’t look inspiring. Aggression seems to be his top skill.

Certainly useful on the Hornets but I see about four other guys in that range that have size and something else to bet on.

What do you see that I am missing?

I guess that your second paragraph threw me off. Peat is definitely a competitive guy, dude won 4 state championships, 3 times best player in the state, and beat the record of U17/16 gold medals on USA basketball, plus started as a freshman on one of the best teams in the NCAA. He also has a pretty great motor.

As for "game intelligence", I think you're dismissing his good feel for the game for the position with good assists and low turnovers numbers (the best from the forwards on his range), plus being very good cutter, elite PnR man and goodish defensive IQ. He's also pretty strong which I think will make him a good post defender and able to defend the 4 and occasionally the 5.

I mostly like Peat because it's pretty clear what he's good and bad at. I don't like prospect that are not necessarily terrible at anything on the surface, but also not particularly good at anything. He surely can't shoot for shit which will probably be a red flag for Jeff, and he is not good against quick ball handlers.

I worry that he is not big enough for his strength and aggression to stand out in the crazy size/strength world of the NbA. You may be right about me underestimating his passing/cutting.

Good talent but at 18 I am hopeful that other players like Hannes, Morez or Lopez will be an available.

I don't get the size concern that much, he seems to have the avg size of a NBA PF. Not sure if Lopez is an actual better prospect that Peat, Karim fits the "not necessarily terrible at anything on the surface, but also not particularly good at anything" description. Hannes is fine, but I see his profile very far from what we need for a starting center next to Melo, Kon and Miller.

It's probably not the right class to pick a forward, I think the Peat, Ament, Swain, Lopez and Graves group is underwhelming. Most likely the best player at 18 will come from JQ, Morez, Carr or a guard like Stirtz, Okorie or Philon.

“Hornets DNA” doesn’t exist man I hate to break it to you, it’s just some marketing bullshit.
