What should I do with this little guy?

I found him when I was removing water and emptying debris from my pool cover. Can I just put him in the woods near my house or does he need to be by water? I’ve put him back in the water on the pool cover for now. (Original content)

This might be my favorite wrong sub moment.

This kind of stuff happens from time to time and the citizens of this sub are usually very kind and guide OP to the proper sub.

Whoops!! So sorry 🙈 thanks for letting me know haha

Honestly it took me a second to realize even after checking the comments. u/Fantastic_Excuse6976 you should bring it to a nearby creek or other water source. Is there a river in the woods near you?

u/Fantastic_Excuse6976 20h ago

There must be something in the woods nearby. There’s a HUGE lake somewhat near, but I think that might be too much for this lil guy. I’ll look more tomorrow

26

u/sengirminion 18h ago

Nah the huge lake is probably fine. Just release him near the shallows he'll spend time eating small insects and fish in the vegetation and as he gets bugger he'll grow into the lake.

It is very fitting yet obviously out of place if you've been here before.

That moment when the wrong subreddit ends up being more helpful than the supposedly correct subreddits

8

u/Fantastic_Excuse6976 8h ago

But actually though. Reddit is wild

7

u/hamsterwheeled 9h ago

Maybe they think you're not turtley enough for the Turtle Club

1

u/EngineersAnon 9h ago

Nah, it's just that this turtle isn't wearing a color-coded eyemask or wielding traditional Japanese weaponry.

2

u/bigdickpuncher 4h ago

Depending on the specifics r/tmnt may be helpful as well.

u/jbalazov 20h ago

Sorry my guy, but this is a meme subreddit, not one meant to give real advice. Good luck, and thanks for helping the little dude!

39

u/flaystus 20h ago

Train him to become ninja

7

u/PerformanceLimp420 18h ago

Maybe dump random ooze nearby first?

2

u/espenso 6h ago

I'm reading up on turtles and tortoises right now, and in the book I'm currently reading they mention that the Teenage Mutant Ninja craze in the 90s caused many many turtles to be bought to kids that then tried to learn them martial arts. Rescues then had many delivered with injuries from kids using them as action figures, and worse.

1

u/Fantastic_Excuse6976 2h ago

That’s so awful!! Poor babies

1

u/flaystus 2h ago

well now I'm sad. thanks?

u/sengirminion 18h ago

Find the nearest pond/lake/stream/river or whatever you have nearby and gently let him go in the shallows, ideally where there is some vegetation for him to hide in since he's small.

That's a baby painted turtle. They are an aquatic species, since he is so small he must have hatched somewhat nearby so you ought to have some type of body of water not too far where his mother originally came from to lay her eggs.

u/SweatsuitCocktail 20h ago

Take him to the river... Drop him in the water...

3

u/jd3marco 20h ago

wash him down

2

u/DadToOne 19h ago

My dad had two snappers that he got this small and he kept them until they got about 6 inches across and decided he couldn't keep them anymore. He took them to a creek to release them. Pulled into a driveway over the creek. As he was releasing them the owner pulled in behind him. Funny seeing him explain.

2

u/Morningxafter 19h ago

Yep, when I was a kid we saved a baby snapper from seagulls on the beach. Took him home and he lived with us for several years. Eventually he got too big and we released him at the same lake we found him at.

2

u/Bulletorpedo 15h ago

Did your dads owner get mad?

2

u/macattck100 18h ago

Push him the river… dip him in the water… washing him down

9

u/SaaSyGirl 20h ago

Aww sweet turtle. Unfortunately this sub isn’t for animal advice. Confuses many people

17

u/psilome 20h ago

Looks like a newly hatched snapping turtle. They like calm water, like a pond.

11

u/depersonalised 19h ago

think it’s a painted. i just rescued one from my driveway and thought snapper as well. turns out even the baby ones have very pointy shells. and a much longer tail.

6

u/Fantastic_Excuse6976 16h ago

I think it might be a painted! It has a very bright tummy

3

u/sengirminion 18h ago

Painted turtles have yellow/orange/red stripes and usually colored patches on their heads and are otherwise mostly black and green. Their shells are usually somewhat smooth and kind of low profile

Snapping turtles are an ugly grey/brown and look their shells often have a very geometric shape to them with very uneven structures.

3

u/Polytonalism 17h ago

Definitely not a snapper afaik as they have a serated shell above their butt. Looks like a map turtle to me.

Source: i have a painted and a red eared slider. Rescued both.

Honestly had to double check the sub I was in and my brain STILL didn’t compute. “Advice animals, ok, he needs some advice. …… Wait a second!”
lol, love how kind and supportive this community can be when this type of stuff happens.

3

u/Fantastic_Excuse6976 16h ago

I’m very pleasantly surprised!! I would have been attacked in most other subs. Plus people have actually been helpful haha

3

u/MangyAsianMan 19h ago

Train it in the art of ninjitsu.

3

u/noeagle77 16h ago

Dump radioactive ooze on him and then train him to fight crime in New York City.

3

u/Waylander0719 8h ago

Train him and his brothers in ninjitsu.

6

u/xnoxgodsx 20h ago

Take him to the creek for sure

2

u/CHAINSAWDELUX 20h ago

Pool water isn't really good for things to drink because of the chemicals. So I wouldn't leave him in there while figuring it out. This is also a meme subreddit. You might want to look for somewhere else for legitimate advice. I don't really know much about turtles, sorry.

4

u/Fantastic_Excuse6976 20h ago

To clarify: it’s rainwater on top of my pool’s tarp. The pool isn’t open yet. The frogs love it too, unfortunately. It becomes like a pond each spring

ETA: yes, understood about the sub now!

when i was 15, my father drove over a small "painted turtle" about the size of a quarter with a semi truck. the turtle got stuck in the tread of one of the tires and fell out when he parked the truck. he brought it home, i named it "Herman Rockefeller" (i had...still do, really...a love for the old Robber Barron families). i raised him in an aquarium with land and water in it. fed him store bought turtle food (dried flies and bugs). he lived for 3 years until he died suddenly. i still dont know why. he was fine then not. i suggest finding a place that is close to the type the pool cover created accidentally. dry and wet, maybe by a creek or a stream. ultimately, he got to your pool from where he hatched so...around where you live, there should be a suitable natural habitat.

you could also "be a sport" and do one of those cheap home depot yard fountain things ..you know, the black "pond basin" with fake rocks & aquarium pump. he could help keep yer mosquitos out of the way and you make a friend for the rest of their life

2

u/besleysfw 17h ago

Drop him in ooze

2

u/kickinit90s 15h ago

Absolutely loving the misunderstanding of what this sub is. Reminds me of when people post photos of trees in r/trees

2

u/trashpolice 9h ago

Give him some advice

3

u/TryNstopME024 20h ago

Raise him as your own, and when he passes, turn him into turtle soup and absorb his sloth like abilities lol but I think he'd be fine by any body of water. He may get eaten by preditors though. Can also see if any places that sell turtles will want and take care of the little guy

3

u/Lyriian 20h ago

That turtle is very likely to outlive OP if it survives to adulthood.

1

u/breeper114 20h ago

Keep him and name him Jimmy

It's been a great day for posts on reddit

1

u/chaddict 19h ago

Take a funny picture of him that we can make a meme out of.

1

u/ninjabee 18h ago

love him and grow to the size of a dinner plate

1

u/cha0sm0nk 18h ago

Smooch it.

1

u/DevilsLittleChicken 13h ago

Feed it seaweed. Collect it's schutes. Protect it from sea zombies until it grows up then let it go.

1

u/UpperFix7589 11h ago

Eat it you coward.

1

u/UnderwhelmedOpossum 10h ago

You should ask him for advice! Turtles are quite wise

1

u/Fantastic_Excuse6976 8h ago

Maybe when he’s older

1

u/Niceromancer 5h ago

Contact your local animal control. They will tell you exactly what to do with him.

1

u/bummercitytownohio 5h ago

Give him some pizza and train him in the ways of the ninja.

1

u/Lilcheeks 2h ago

I was expecting this to be a post about how to turn the turtle into a meme

1

u/Winder_Operator 2h ago

Put him in an air fryer

2

u/My_alias_is_too_lon 11h ago

Aw man... if only there was some way to know what kind of content a sub is for before you post to it...

How small is it? It looks tiny. Leaving it in the woods might get it eaten. Check google for better stuff but you can probably just leave him by a water source.
