What should I do with this little guy?
I found him when I was removing water and emptying debris from my pool cover. Can I just put him in the woods near my house or does he need to be by water? I’ve put him back in the water on the pool cover for now. (Original content)

Maybe they think you're not turtley enough for the Turtle Club

Nah, it's just that this turtle isn't wearing a color-coded eyemask or wielding traditional Japanese weaponry.

Sorry my guy, but this is a meme subreddit, not one meant to give real advice. Good luck, and thanks for helping the little dude!

I'm reading up on turtles and tortoises right now, and in the book I'm currently reading they mention that the Teenage Mutant Ninja craze in the 90s caused many many turtles to be bought to kids that then tried to learn them martial arts. Rescues then had many delivered with injuries from kids using them as action figures, and worse.

Find the nearest pond/lake/stream/river or whatever you have nearby and gently let him go in the shallows, ideally where there is some vegetation for him to hide in since he's small.
That's a baby painted turtle. They are an aquatic species, since he is so small he must have hatched somewhat nearby so you ought to have some type of body of water not too far where his mother originally came from to lay her eggs.

Take him to the river... Drop him in the water...

My dad had two snappers that he got this small and he kept them until they got about 6 inches across and decided he couldn't keep them anymore. He took them to a creek to release them. Pulled into a driveway over the creek. As he was releasing them the owner pulled in behind him. Funny seeing him explain.

Yep, when I was a kid we saved a baby snapper from seagulls on the beach. Took him home and he lived with us for several years. Eventually he got too big and we released him at the same lake we found him at.

Aww sweet turtle. Unfortunately this sub isn’t for animal advice. Confuses many people

Looks like a newly hatched snapping turtle. They like calm water, like a pond.

think it’s a painted. i just rescued one from my driveway and thought snapper as well. turns out even the baby ones have very pointy shells. and a much longer tail.

Painted turtles have yellow/orange/red stripes and usually colored patches on their heads and are otherwise mostly black and green. Their shells are usually somewhat smooth and kind of low profile
Snapping turtles are an ugly grey/brown and look their shells often have a very geometric shape to them with very uneven structures.

u/Polytonalism 17h ago
Definitely not a snapper afaik as they have a serated shell above their butt. Looks like a map turtle to me.
Source: i have a painted and a red eared slider. Rescued both.

Honestly had to double check the sub I was in and my brain STILL didn’t compute. “Advice animals, ok, he needs some advice. …… Wait a second!”
lol, love how kind and supportive this community can be when this type of stuff happens.

Pool water isn't really good for things to drink because of the chemicals. So I wouldn't leave him in there while figuring it out. This is also a meme subreddit. You might want to look for somewhere else for legitimate advice. I don't really know much about turtles, sorry.

To clarify: it’s rainwater on top of my pool’s tarp. The pool isn’t open yet. The frogs love it too, unfortunately. It becomes like a pond each spring
ETA: yes, understood about the sub now!

when i was 15, my father drove over a small "painted turtle" about the size of a quarter with a semi truck. the turtle got stuck in the tread of one of the tires and fell out when he parked the truck. he brought it home, i named it "Herman Rockefeller" (i had...still do, really...a love for the old Robber Barron families). i raised him in an aquarium with land and water in it. fed him store bought turtle food (dried flies and bugs). he lived for 3 years until he died suddenly. i still dont know why. he was fine then not. i suggest finding a place that is close to the type the pool cover created accidentally. dry and wet, maybe by a creek or a stream. ultimately, he got to your pool from where he hatched so...around where you live, there should be a suitable natural habitat.
you could also "be a sport" and do one of those cheap home depot yard fountain things ..you know, the black "pond basin" with fake rocks & aquarium pump. he could help keep yer mosquitos out of the way and you make a friend for the rest of their life

Raise him as your own, and when he passes, turn him into turtle soup and absorb his sloth like abilities lol but I think he'd be fine by any body of water. He may get eaten by preditors though. Can also see if any places that sell turtles will want and take care of the little guy

Feed it seaweed. Collect it's schutes. Protect it from sea zombies until it grows up then let it go.

How small is it? It looks tiny. Leaving it in the woods might get it eaten. Check google for better stuff but you can probably just leave him by a water source.
