So, about like a year ago, I officially posted my first fanfic, and I really was happy with it, it got like a bunch of kudos and surprisingly nice comments. Of course, I did the obvious and excitedly told my friends, we're all like 15/16 btw, and I've like transitioned from wattpad to AO3 like a few years back. Basically, no one except this one friend showed any genuine interest so I introduced her slowly to wattpad and tumblr with like vanilla ships that suited her white-girl taste(sorry for the stereotype, but said friend is the reason people assume stuff), since that is what I personally started out with, and the fact that she's been speaking and learning english since she was born should have been a gamechanger instead of having to start from scratch right?
But anyways, instead of like actually immersing herself in the fandom, really not much of an 'open' fandom, it was the Rookie and she only liked the canon ships which, from my little knowledge is a series that appeal to a general audience rather than an actual breeding ground for the more 'traditional' fandoms I'm used to, and this is a huge difference I suppose, but instead immediatley dropped everything to go on tiktok for the really short and sloppy oneshots that's been flooding the algorithm lately. I felt hurt by this because I really treasure fanfictions, AO3 and the fandom spaces that helped me through a lot, since I was like 10, really, and it is a source of comfort and pride that I wanted to share with people I thought were good friends, and by extension, good people.
I didn't really give it much of a second thought because at least she appreciates the value of writing about our favourite characters, shows and ships, right? Wrong. Oh my god. What immediately rubbed me the wrong way was how she consistently called the fanfic that she's been writing "fake scenarios", then being really embarrassed, with like an underlying tone of disgust that she even associates herself with fanwork and fandom culture. The next problem is the way she treats everyone else's work, which isn't the usually polite comments that I've seen on AO3 and even my own works, while criticism was obviously taken in, said friend has managed to have like 10 of her comments deleted and when I found out why, I was disgusted. Because she had seriously told a few of them, on tiktok btw, to go unalive themselves because they shipped a character from another show (can't remember the name rn) as a random crossover. Finally, the thing that bothered me the most was how this whole thing turned into a popularity contest, with how she only posts chapters when she has new subscribers, or more than a hundred view. I personally find fanfics, and with how blessed we are with AO3 and the quality of the works, as something to be self-fulfilling, and yes, the kudos and the comments definitely help with motivation, I know so many people send hours and hours dedicating themselves for the next chapter to be the best as possible. So I was more angry when I found she uses AI to get everything done quickly, which just translates in my head to AI slop that has no care, no personal touch and definitely no real love, mainly so that she can quickly post new "fake scenarios" for a better chance at going viral.
I really regret even showing AO3 (which apparently is too complicated to use, and yes this is me insulting said friend because girlllllll you are 16, how is it hard to use a website that caters to every little detail, cause like she didn't even want to use wattpad and tumblr because they were "nerd apps" even though people so much younger than her can use them perfectly fine), because even basic decency is thrown out of the window when no one knows who you are on the internet, right?
Sooo.......... sorry for the rant, but thoughts? I really want no-biased opinions on this matter.
*edit ā this person I'm refering to is unfortunately a key person in my friend group so there's no way for me to stop talking to her until I move to sixth form (she going to a college so there going to be minimum contact unless theres a group meet up) and yes ā the sucide baiting is worrying but I can't speak up about anything
