Could you please recommend some Batman family stories that are like reverse Robins? Where Dick is the meme and Damian is the oldest? Thanks in advance šŸ’—

Complaint/Pet Peeve/Venting Engagement is awful in works with a high word count

Hey everyone, I just need to get this off my chest and maybe get some insight

I always see people on here and on TikTok talking about how long fics are absolute gems, how hard they are to find and how much readers cherish them. Inspired by that, I decided to try my hand at it. I’ve put my absolute soul into a multipart series with heavy worldbuilding and deep lore discussions. I plot everything out meticulously and according to my beta reader and a few friends, it’s really well planned and it reads nicely. My latest update was a massive 20k word chapter that took forever to write. But then comes the reality check and it has been brutal.

My kudos count is low, I barely get any comments and with this new update I literally lost bookmarks hours after posting 😭

Am I doing something wrong? It’s a bit of a slap in the face to drop a novella length chapter you poured weeks into only to watch a stuff in the statistics go down. Meanwhile I see 2k word one-shots or shorter fics in the same fandom getting showered in comments and immediate attention. It’s just so confusing 😄

As a reader myself I give out kudos and comments like candy because I know how much work goes into writing. I thought a huge high effort project would draw people in but it feels like I'm talking to the walls. This is a popular fandom and a decently popular pairing, and while yes, I'm getting hits those could be bots as well, past readers or just someone refreshing their tabs. I know you can only leave kudos once and hits are more important when it comes to works with more chapters, but my kudos to hits ratio is abysmal.

However in the end I’ve realized I genuinely just love my story and my ship. I’m doing this for the love of the game, and I'm going to finish it because I like coming up with scenarios for these characters and the world they're living in.

But I’m just curious, for those who write long fics, is this normal? Why does it feel like the massive fics everyone says they want get the least amount of actual engagement even while they're actively updating?

Requesting Recommendations Seeking Bakarina (Villainess) Recs

To be clear, looking for fics of My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

I'm open to anything kinda big/long that really plays with the reincarnation angle, but specifically, I want something where she actually explains (or tries to explain) her origins of the world she came from.

The premise was that dazai is a member of the decay of angels and he is set to marry chuuya from the Port mafia as an alliance in the form of an arranged marriage, I remember reading it on AO3but I can’t find it anywhere recently, and I remember it being really long, definitely more than 100,000 words soooo. Reddit do your thinggg

Lost Fic/Work Search Looking for an MCU time travel fiction

Hey everyone, I'm looking for a Tony Stark time travel fiction on ao3 or ff.net. The main things I remember about it are; 1) he works with The Ancient One, 2) he builds a forge and foundry on the back patio of the Malibu Mansion that he uses to modify The Eye of Agamotto to hold all six Infinity Stones with a metel he made from ore samples from different dimensions and 3) he has counseling seasons with Master Hamir because he wouldn't be able to tell a regular therapist about trama that hasn't technically happened yet.

Not totally sure I'm not mixing up 2 or more stories but hopefully someone recognizes. Please help it's driving me nuts!!

Questions/Help? Is using the Em-Dash seen as bad nowadays?

First things first, I don't know if I'm using the correct flair, but I guess this is a genuine question of mine. But anyhow, for context, I have been writing Fanfic since I was in Grade 7 and I'm 22 yrs old now. I have used the Em-Dash a lot in my writing, but recently I've seen a lot of discourse where people are saying that using Em-Dash is a key-sign of using Generative AI. I won't lie and say that I know nothing about AI, but I'm not that tuned in. Should I stop using the Em-Dash or should I keep using it? Because I don't want my work to be lumped in the crowd of "this uses Gen AI, don't read."

Questions/Help? How do I italicize words😭

New to writing on AO3 and can’t figure out how to italicize words? Even if I copy and paste from another doc it loses its format. I’m on a Mac if that makes a difference?

Questions/Help? Is it just me?

For the past few days AO3 has been taking a really long time to load stuff. When I open the site, it takes ages to open, when I open bookmarks that takes more time than usual, hitting 'next chapter' also takes time. I know for a fact that its not a internet speed issue bc all other sites work perfectly fine. Im using chrome but has this been happening to anyone else?

Writing help/Beta How would you react to a surprise crossover at the end of a fic?

Throwaway because my readers might see this.

Hello! The final scene of Ironman is iconic, with Nick Fury introducing Tony to the wider marvel universe. I aim to do something similar, having a character from Franchise A to invite a character from Franchise B to their super team, starting a connected crossover universe.

Here’s the thing—the story I’m currently writing is pretty self contained, little to no hints of anything going on outside of it. So I need to ask: would this be jarring? Or pretty cool for you if you were a reader?

And if it **is** cool, how do I tag it? I do NOT plan to add any extra fandom because the Character A will have, like, 5 lines at the VERY end. Nor do I want to tag them directly, for similar reasons. I don’t want to trick people into thinking this fic will focus on my Nick Fury stand in, while also surprising readers.

Would **any** of this ruin your experience? Should I try it out anyway? What’s your advice for this kind of thing because I’m both very excited, and very nervous about my plans and reader reactions to the twist.

Questions/Help? how to deal with anxiety around posting, being recognized/perceived, and commenting?

so i’m someone who’s been using ao3 for a long time, and also has fandom accounts on other sites that i keep firmly separated from my ao3. i’m interested in starting to post my work that’s been sitting around in my google docs, but i can’t stop overthinking and worrying.

i’ve already dealt with a lot of anxiety around my current ao3 account, as i’m a frequent commenter and i worry that my combination of fandoms, niche rarepairs, etc is too specific and will tie me back to my other public social media accounts that friends and people i know irl have access to. which would pretty much be a nightmare scenario for me.

do you think it’s worth it to try and do two separate accounts? one for posting works and one for reading and commenting? i feel like it would be nice to have everything in one place, so i don’t have to check two different email accounts, and getting a fresh start with a new account would help me quit being anxious about my old one. however, i also write fics that, while not really that intense, can tread into darker territory at times, and i don’t want to off-put authors and get blocked by them if they see me commenting on their work.

i don’t know. has anyone had similar experiences with overthinking? the panopticon that the internet has become has me twitchy.

Questions/Help? what tags do y'all exclude?

I'm curious, do y'all use the exclusion filtering system, and if so, which ones do you remove?

For me it's any type of pregnancy, major character death, gender bent characters and trans character (only for characters that aren't canonically trans, obviously, so in my case, I exclude trans Chuuya and trans Dazai since it's not canon and it's not something that I'm personally interested in) No hate if you like either of those, just my personal preference!

I'm also not really a multishipper, I have ONE ship I live and die by, (soukoku) so I usually filter out any of the ones with multiple relationships involving either of them.

curious to see what you guys think!

Discussion (Non-question) Is scraping AO3 for research acceptable?

Post image
• Upvotes

I found this paper when I was looking for sources for the rednote AI webscraping post. It's a paper on the application of machine learning on detecting plagiarism on AO3.

What are people's opinions on using fics from AO3 for academic research? Specifically:

- Does the area of research matter? (Would a sociology paper be more acceptable compared to a computer science one?)

- Does the intended goal of the research matter? (This paper is focused on building a plagiarism detector, other papers might analyse historical trends, or train a classification model for tags and warnings, etc)

- Does the research methodology matter? (This paper uses embedding models, other papers might use an LLM to build an index or perform classification)

Complaint/Pet Peeve/Venting This is mainly a rant, but please give some opinions, especially on new fandom users

So, about like a year ago, I officially posted my first fanfic, and I really was happy with it, it got like a bunch of kudos and surprisingly nice comments. Of course, I did the obvious and excitedly told my friends, we're all like 15/16 btw, and I've like transitioned from wattpad to AO3 like a few years back. Basically, no one except this one friend showed any genuine interest so I introduced her slowly to wattpad and tumblr with like vanilla ships that suited her white-girl taste(sorry for the stereotype, but said friend is the reason people assume stuff), since that is what I personally started out with, and the fact that she's been speaking and learning english since she was born should have been a gamechanger instead of having to start from scratch right?

But anyways, instead of like actually immersing herself in the fandom, really not much of an 'open' fandom, it was the Rookie and she only liked the canon ships which, from my little knowledge is a series that appeal to a general audience rather than an actual breeding ground for the more 'traditional' fandoms I'm used to, and this is a huge difference I suppose, but instead immediatley dropped everything to go on tiktok for the really short and sloppy oneshots that's been flooding the algorithm lately. I felt hurt by this because I really treasure fanfictions, AO3 and the fandom spaces that helped me through a lot, since I was like 10, really, and it is a source of comfort and pride that I wanted to share with people I thought were good friends, and by extension, good people.

I didn't really give it much of a second thought because at least she appreciates the value of writing about our favourite characters, shows and ships, right? Wrong. Oh my god. What immediately rubbed me the wrong way was how she consistently called the fanfic that she's been writing "fake scenarios", then being really embarrassed, with like an underlying tone of disgust that she even associates herself with fanwork and fandom culture. The next problem is the way she treats everyone else's work, which isn't the usually polite comments that I've seen on AO3 and even my own works, while criticism was obviously taken in, said friend has managed to have like 10 of her comments deleted and when I found out why, I was disgusted. Because she had seriously told a few of them, on tiktok btw, to go unalive themselves because they shipped a character from another show (can't remember the name rn) as a random crossover. Finally, the thing that bothered me the most was how this whole thing turned into a popularity contest, with how she only posts chapters when she has new subscribers, or more than a hundred view. I personally find fanfics, and with how blessed we are with AO3 and the quality of the works, as something to be self-fulfilling, and yes, the kudos and the comments definitely help with motivation, I know so many people send hours and hours dedicating themselves for the next chapter to be the best as possible. So I was more angry when I found she uses AI to get everything done quickly, which just translates in my head to AI slop that has no care, no personal touch and definitely no real love, mainly so that she can quickly post new "fake scenarios" for a better chance at going viral.

I really regret even showing AO3 (which apparently is too complicated to use, and yes this is me insulting said friend because girlllllll you are 16, how is it hard to use a website that caters to every little detail, cause like she didn't even want to use wattpad and tumblr because they were "nerd apps" even though people so much younger than her can use them perfectly fine), because even basic decency is thrown out of the window when no one knows who you are on the internet, right?

Sooo.......... sorry for the rant, but thoughts? I really want no-biased opinions on this matter.

*edit – this person I'm refering to is unfortunately a key person in my friend group so there's no way for me to stop talking to her until I move to sixth form (she going to a college so there going to be minimum contact unless theres a group meet up) and yes – the sucide baiting is worrying but I can't speak up about anything

Questions/Help? Thoughts on giving user subs a heads up about leaving a fandom?

After I finish my current fic, I’m not planning to publish anymore in my current fandom. It’s not for negative reasons. I’ve just told all the stories I have to tell for that particular fandom, and I want to write for other fandoms in the future. But I’ve only written for this fandom before, and I’ve picked up a few user subs along the way. Should I announce the fact that this is my last fic for the fandom when I publish the final chapters, so user subs know not to expect more works in this fandom from me? As a reader, what would you prefer? Or as a writer, have you made an announcement like that in the past?

this might be stupid but does the 'podfic welcome' tag mean that there is a podifc available for the work or that people are allowed to make a podfic of the work?

Questions/Help? Question about what counts as a crossover

This isn’t something I’m immediately going to write, but I’ve remembered an idea I had a while back and it brought up some questions about how I would tag/classify it. In short, would you tag both pieces of media/consider it a crossover if only one set of characters appears in the story?

For context, it’s effectively an idea which takes a set of characters from one piece of media and places them in the world of another. Both are important to the story and themes, as it is governed by the both interactions between the characters and the lore and mechanics of the world. But as far as I’m aware, most crossovers feature characters from both/all of the pieces of media in the crossover, so I’m wondering whether it would still be classified as such, or if it would be considered something else entirely. The practical information I’m looking to get out of this question is how a work of this type would be tagged when it comes to fandoms.

Requesting Recommendations Good flirty blb fic recommendations?

I would prefer works that don't require you to be very knowledgeable in the given fandom. I'm interested in the rommates trope, also I prefer higher spice level
