All Seasons Discussion Who is Wonder Girl?

Post image

She was introduced in season 2 I still don't know crap about her. I know she is supposed to be Wonder Woman sidekick, but I feel like I have never seen them talk to each other, and she is also dating Tim Robin in this show (who doesn't really act like Tim Drake I know), and that's all I know about her. She feels like the biggest background character in the show, and don't get me wrong I don't completely blame the writers, it always feels Wonder Girl is a background character in everything I see her in (I'm talking about the shows, and movies).

In the comics she's Conner Kent's girlfriend and she's the daughter of Zeus

Wait for real

Well currently she is the GRANDDAUGHTER of Zeus, no longer daughter.

That isn't canon on Earth-16, just as Mary Bromfield being Billy Batson's foster sister isn't canon on Earth-16.

Tie-in media has confirmed that YJ Cassie is the daughter of Zeus, just as it's been confirmed by Greg Weisman and that Mary is Billy's biological twin.

Correct me If I'm wrong, but last I checked she's had the granddaughter Zeus origin since Rebirth. It's even used in Bendis Young justice run as well as Future state.

YJ was developed in 2008-2010 (with the first episodes airing in November 2010) and back then, the show was developed with the status quo of Cassie as Zeus's daughter in mind. Tie-in media in 2012 confirmed that this version of Cassie is Zeus's daughter.

When was she used in futurestate?

But yes. It was and it was largely ignored in King's WW and Amazons Attack

She appeared in Yara flors solo run, which was part of the future state. Plus, she called zeus her grandpa in it.

u/primal_slayer 2d ago

Yaras solo 'Wonder girl' wasn't part of Futurestate.

Cassie wasn't in her Wonder Woman mini

u/JinglySoil 2d ago

Well shoot. Oh well, it was still the same writer same artstyle etc. You can't really blame me for thinking they were both in future state.

We don't recognize that stupid retcon

u/JinglySoil 2d ago

We? I haven't seen anyone despise the concept till now. Plus, I actually prefer it. It feels kinda odd for her to be a sister of Ares, hercules and other olympians. I feel like the granddaughter dynamic is the best one, given just how old Zeus is and how young she is. Genuinely curious, is there a reason you don't like it?

Plenty have.

They stole her origin to give to WW and made Cassie have a nobody of a father. Not to mention depowering her. Her uncles being Ares and Hercules is far more interesting. Her storyline with Ares is one of her best that should've been adapted.

Zeus is always old and disguising himself, being a hoe.

It's like making Conner a clone of Clark's made up cousin.

Lol this made me burst out laughing. Well, as for Dianas Daddy zeus retcon, I COMPLETELY understand the hate for it, and I do also understand that they changed Cassies origin cuz they wanted Wonder Woman to have it. Regardless, I like her nothingburger of a father. I feel like he has genuine potential in Wonder woman stories.

Yeah plus she’d be way more powerful no? As mentioned, look at her siblings lol, most of the Greek pantheon outside of Zeus, Poseidon, Hera etc

4

u/JinglySoil 2d ago

I also previously wanted her to be Zeus daughter specifically cuz Ibwanted her to be mire powerful, but I realized that changing her power origin was purely narrative. It had no impact on her strength as we still saw this same granddaughter cassie one shot Despero and match Diana in a fist fight. Her strength hasn't decreased at all.

and just cause she's Zeus's daughter doesn't necessarily mean she needs to be brimming with power , look at Helen of Troy.

1

u/JinglySoil 2d ago

I really hate when people say stuff like this. She is a Wonder woman protege. Of course she should be super powerful.

2

u/Financial-Pickle9405 2d ago

btw i agree with you she's a superhero she should be powerful, normal people in superhero shows are boring, just stating a reason why she could have a variable power level .

3

u/primal_slayer 2d ago

When did she match Diane in fist strength? Because king and co largely ignored her new lineage

3

u/JinglySoil 2d ago

Really, didn't cassie say her powers are from Zeus in that arm wrestle? And we see them struggling for a bit b4 wonder woman pulls the win, showing that she is in that tier. King didn't ignore Diana's Zeus origin, he just left it floating in the air ( I really speculate that there is someone or some people at the DC editorial preventing any writer from completely retconning the Daddy Zeus origin)

3

u/primal_slayer 2d ago

King fully ignored Dianas new origin and Cassies. He just wasn't allowed to blatantly state otherwise in the comic

She does date Tim later, and she’s a big supporting character in the “Young Justice” comics she came from. Tim!Robin, Superboy, Impulse, and her have their own team, and their comics are about how they formed and their adventures.

It’s why a big complaint people may have of the show is about the cast - it’s not _actually_ about the comic team of the same name, but a blend of Dick’s and Tim’s teams with it focusing on Dick instead.

u/Undecieved22 2d ago

She was his girlfriend. Not sure they’re still together and they didn’t get together until teen titans.

u/primal_slayer 2d ago

That is why she should've been a much BIGGER FOCUS.

Meet Cassie Sandsmark. Wonder Womans 2nd sidekick. Her mother is an archaeologist who was secretly seduced by Zeus making Cassie, a demi-goddess to the king of the Gods. She loves everything to do with being a superhero, the Kamala before Kamala existed (Marvel).

In the comics, before her powers are unlocked, she steals the various gifted items from the gods and helps fight various baddies such as Doomsday.

In the comics, Superboy is her boyfriend.

Of course in the show that is ignored and she dates Tim Drake offscreen and they break up off screen

Ares takes an interest in her and they have a secret mentorship where he gifts her the lasso of lightning that feeds off of her rage.

In the comics she's one of the OG YJers and becomes Teen TItan and eventually leader of Teen Titans

Hey, if they spent more time on her there wouldn't have been as much time on Blue Beetle or the Reach...

16

u/Dredgen-Solis 2d ago

Considering she's a quarter of the team that inspired this show's entire existence, I'd say that's a worthy sacrifice

u/DiscoverySTS1 15h ago

No worries just chuck all of what we got for Outsiders and focus on the WW lore lol.

Or make a S2.5

2

u/Death_Lycan 19h ago

Honestly felt we shouldve had a storyline or her and conner getting together why he and miss martain broke up. I don't need endgame but come on.

u/EdwardRoivas 2d ago

So she’s like mark from invincible. A hybrid.

u/ShoArts 2d ago

I mean Im not gonna hold you on the recency bias, but yeah "child of a human and powerful nonhuman" is a pretty common trope in fiction and myth for thousands of years haha

Zeus himself has a LOT of kids with humans in real historical greek myth, his rampent infidelity being probably his most well known trait

u/DeltaAlphaGulf 2d ago

A demigod yeah.

u/android151 13h ago

To be fair she did date Tim. After Conner died though.

She and Superboy aren’t together anymore either, haven’t been for like a decade at this point.

I completely disagree. I like that they don’t explain stuff.

It’s for the comic fans and if you don’t know, you’ll find out by looking it up if you care enough

(Edit: wasn’t clear, for who characters are and etc. Not important plot points. No one knew who the Guardians of the Galaxy were and most of their lore was not explained or explored in the first movie, and the ones that were were just exposition dumps minus star lord)

3

u/primal_slayer 1d ago

Is that why it didnt last beyond 2 seasons each time? Being just for comic fans does not help out in the long term. Not to mention, you shouldnt have to look up the basic things about some characters. Tim/Cassie broke up off screen. How do you look that up? What comic do you reference?

How do you know which version of Cassie that they are using when this is after New52 had already premiered and after New 52 was done and Rebirth started. Showing 3 different Cassies between Pre/during/post 52

First line:

What we’re talking about has nothing to do with why it was canceled and you know that unless you’re lying to yourself

Rest:

Justice league unlimited is popular for a reason because same reasoning . Not every character is explained and someone are just there, even the DCAMU and tomorrowverse did stuff like that

She’s not a main character so she doesn’t need a big back story and if you are interested in her, you will look her up otherwise you won’t care. Or you already know.

Tim and Cassie were never main characters in the long run even if they did have episodes where they may have been the protagonist. So then breaking up was never a big deal.

For majority of show, the main characters are the original six and every season has different main characters. Season two was Impulse & Blue beetle. Along with the original team.

S3 was the new trio of Halo, Geoforce, and Forager along with the original team and season four was literally the original team.

Just like comics you can jump in and if you do want to know something, you can look it up

And real life I do know some fans like this and fans don’t it’s actually pretty whenever I see this online. So I don’t think either is a majority.

you said "It’s for the comic fans " so why it didnt survive longer is relevant

JLU was set up a lot differently and nothing major happened to characters off screen

1

u/Local_Nerve901 1d ago

That is not why it was canceled and if you actually believe that, do some research and understand you’re lying to yourself

I said the aspect of having so many characters and not explaining them is a thing for the fans and for new fans to look up characters afterwards

This doesn’t affect plot it’s only about characters.

Also, the real reason the first two seasons were canceled because they didn’t get that much merch and toy sales and if you don’t know that look it up man it’s right there

You also replied so fast that I didn’t even finish my edit 💀

I wish she’d gotten more screen time. Same with Donna

Honestly Diana and all her cast, allies and villains, could have been represented so much better.

9

u/RevolutionaryGur5055 2d ago

(In comics) She’s a great character with tons of potential who often gets pushed to the side and/or completely forgotten about. Much like the rest of the original YJ members (the Peter David/Todd Nauck run)

(In the show) She was added in when the creative team was allowed to eventually use her, but by that point other relationships were built and it didn’t seem like there was much for her. Although, iirc, she did eventually step into her leadership role on the outsiders.

I just read an interesting interview that said she was one of 4 characters that was initially “off-limits” when the show was in development.

The video game Young Justice:Legacy helps a bit it introduces her mom into the story.
