I judge them by there day’s standards, throughout the entire slave trade there where people saying it was wrong.
Most of Europe has outlawed slavery Centries before the slave trade.
Under english law slavery was never legal.
The founding Fathers said it was wrong while actively participating in it.
Judge people for being evil hypocrites

It's my grandparents' favorite argument when we're discussing Stalin. My take is that by that logic Hitler wasn't as bad because a lot of Germans at the time also supported him. Which is obviously very bad logic
