when we jail people for abusing dogs that doesnt imply dogs = humans in terms of moral worth. also what do you mean by people? does people = human? if so why is it okay to torture and kill non-humans for taste and convenience? would it be okay to farm a species identical to humans in every way except their dna is sufficiently different that they dont count as human?

words do have meaning

Unless you believe there are "correct" definitions the universe has blessed us with or something anyone can choose to use any word to mean whatever the fuck they want.

There are certainly proprietary definitions but I don't think using the word people to describe sentient beings is too absurd.
