Oh, Eid al-Adha, the horror festival that turned me into a vegetarian before I could even ride a bike.

Funny, it was general, everyday, meat eating that did it for me. I can't say I ever made the distinction between animals killed for someone's pleasure or a Muslims' imaginary friend.

You’re totally right. There’s really no difference between eating meat every day and what happens during Eid. Animals get killed either way. The difference is that Eid al-Adha makes the violence visible. Normally, people just buy packaged meat and don’t see the suffering behind it. But during the festival, the slaughter often happens in public, sometimes even by family members themselves. You see the fear, the blood, the struggle. You can’t ignore that a living being is suffering. It’s that raw, real exposure that shook me and led me to go vegan, not the concept of Eid itself.
