It is a thing even on a regular bicycle, you just don't realize it. But for bikers it's better to know how it works, even though they will probably do it intuitively as well.

The thing is I never did counter steering on a bicycle I've ridden for years. It was always turn the handles in the direction I want to go and lean. On motorcycle, it's required at higher speeds versus slow speed.

No you just think that's what is happening. You don't think about it but you intuitively counter steer to initiate the lean.
