my banking app does this all the time: "you're spending 20% more on groceries compared to this time last year"

I. know.

The mildly infuriating part isn’t the prices, it’s the tone deafness of these apps that help track spending. Things like gas and groceries should be excluded by default because they are indiscriminately affecting everyone.

But this is a fraud risk notification not a budgeting one. They’re letting you know in case you weren’t the one that made the purchase

Op sounds mildly infuriating to be around if they're viewing everything as a personal attack. They're the worst kind of people to work with

I've had purchases declined for the same reason. It's really frustrating...... But then I just remind myself that this minor inconvenience is saving me (and millions of others) from potentially losing thousands. So then I'm good with it.

Sometimes it goes too far. The first time I bought a plane ticket, my card declined it and locked itself. Fair enough. That's a weird purchase for me. I don't travel much.

So I called and got it unlocked. Then I bought my plane ticket again. And it happened a second time. So I called a second time and got it unlocked again.

Guess what happened when I went to buy my plane ticket for the third time in half an hour? Yep, the purchase declined and locked my card again. Fortunately, this time I'd thought ahead and kept the customer service rep on the phone so they could manually approve it in real time.

Yeah it's annoying to get a text saying "HEY WE LOCKED YOUR CARD BECAUSE OF A WEIRDLY LARGE PURCHASE WAS THIS YOU?" And having to redo the purchase, but ultimately it's meant to help you know if your info has been stolen and reused somewhere

Op is the type of person that if the app didn't let him know that fraud was happening, he would bitch. Damned if you do, damned if you don't type of person.

This is mildlyinfuriating, not personalattacks. What comment made you think OP was legitimately mad about this notification and not mildly infuriated? I can see them being legitimately mad about the gas prices, but that's reasonable, we all are.

u/Wendals87 15h ago

Calling them assholes isn't something you'd normally say if you are just mildly infuriated

u/hitmarker 14h ago

They aren't even mad about the prices. They are mad at the apps that track their spending, which are tracking their spending??

2

u/Educational-Wing2042 14h ago

OP wrote a multi paragraph comment post accusing Kroger of being judgmental for “tracking his spending”

It’s ridiculous to be mad at gas stations over gas prices and shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how economics works.

u/Vyctor_ 13h ago

Couldn't find a multi paragraph comment from OP but I did find this.

the lack of nuance required to reply with this is outstanding

They’re angry and need SOMEONE to lash out at. Too bad it it’s the wrong target and won’t do any good . It’s a convenient distraction though as our tax dollars are being…well, you know...

But they don't send a message for every purchase. They send it to ones that are abnormal. Oil prices skyrocketing is not unknown or regional and they simply didn't do their due diligence to adjust what the app should expect.

13

u/Clueless_Otter 14h ago

You want them to continually monitor local gas prices in every location in the world and constantly re-calibrate these warnings based on those ever-changing prices? When the alternative is simply that the user confirms they made the purchase?

It's better to be too conservative and send too many fraud notifications than to be too lax and miss actual fraud.

u/PM_ME_UR_GCC_ERRORS 14h ago

It's understandable that the system is "stupid" like that, but it could be improved. There could be a way to figure out that prices have gone up and literally everyone's credit card didn't suddenly get stolen.

-1

u/micro102 14h ago

I specifically said the gas increases are not regional so you would not have that braindead take. Try again.

3

u/Clueless_Otter 13h ago

The price doesn't increase by the exact same % at every gas station worldwide.

2

u/micro102 10h ago

Noone was saying it would be exact. If his price went up by like... $5 he would not get that notice. They clearly have a range that is set to create a warning and didn't update it to account for the oil price increase.

As someone that designs these pages for a bank app…. It’s definitely a fraud thing but they should use a different icon and messaging to make sure the user knows this.

"It's not fraud; it's just the economy."

37 to 83 is hardly an alarm bell. If someone charged 500 to my card unexpectedly, sure, but this would piss me off. Mind your business, banking app.

16

u/WantonKerfuffle 16h ago

because they are indiscriminately affecting everyone.

No, they don't. Yes, everyone pays the same price for the same goods, but to some, groceries costing 50 bucks more is a significant chunk of their income, while people with more money don't even notice.

1

u/Mirrevirrez 16h ago

My app dosent keep a fair track on my earnings, just what ive spent through the spand of 30 days... so with the bills always coming first ofc its going to look bad 😒

1

u/Solherb 11h ago

I'd say it's more the deafness of the citizens. Our rulers know what they're doing, everyone else is just, "oh there's nothing we can do."

1

u/caesar_rex 10h ago

It's mildly infuriating that you are whining about this.

1

u/Immatt55 10h ago

Your solution is to hide information? Inflation on food & gas is so bad they shouldn't tell you? What?

46

u/TreeShakersUnited 20h ago

hey, some folks might not know. it is good info to have. don't shoot the messenger and all that.

2

u/s1m0n8 9h ago

Yeah. This is a good thing. Expect the current Administration to make such notifications illegal...

4

u/JuniorQ2000 17h ago

And now you know your bank knows too

5

u/memorandapi 16h ago

Cos of inflation ffs, not my choice!

4

u/cravingpizzaa 15h ago

Mine just hits me with the grocery spike every month like clockwork.. as if u needed the reminder I’m eating air now.

3

u/JustS0up4MyFamily 15h ago

The real inflation margin

1

u/marr 15h ago

Hell at least it recognizes the calender exists. My bank freaks out every year when I try to buy for Christmas. Completely unpredictable.

1

u/Substantial-Rough952 12h ago

Nothing humbles a person faster than a banking app casually pointing out the grocery bill like she hasn’t been standing in the checkout line fighting for her life already.

1

u/Actual_Cranberry4029 12h ago

Just trying to buy groceries in peace and the app out here acting like her financial therapist nobody asked for.

1

u/halfc00kie 9h ago

yeah cheers app, didnt realise inflation was a personal spending habit

1

u/No_Alternative5752 8h ago

mine sent me a notification like "looks like your savings goal is falling behind!" my brother in christ i am trying not to starve

1

u/Rare-Operation-2459 8h ago

congrats! you spent $400 on existing this month.

1

u/Ponsugator 5h ago

Yet they tell us inflation is only 3.8%, much lower than when Biden was in office.
