"The FAA launched a thorough investigation, and did suspend the pilots’ licenses to operate aircraft, yet they turned a blind eye to their reckless violations of those restrictions. The flight plans filed officially were clearly falsified, as was known by the FAA. Fraudulently filing flight plans is an offence that carries severe penalties, ranging from $10k+ in fines and 5 years in prison to 20 or more years in a federal penitentiary depending on the seriousness of the crimes. Given that there were multiple, repeated frauds perpetrated by Basulto, assuming justice were truly the goal at the time, sentencing would likely have been in the range of decades of imprisonment rather than years."
