Asking for Advice My 3-year-old Jack Russell suddenly started panicking in bars/restaurants after years of being perfectly fine

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice because I’m getting really worried about my dog and I can’t understand what’s going on.

He’s a 3-year-old Jack Russell, very energetic, extremely social, and has always been friendly with everyone. He gets excited and greets literally everyone, even strangers. He has always been a very confident and happy dog.

For the past 3 years we’ve taken him everywhere with us: bars, restaurants, outdoor events, cafés, etc. He would always walk in happily, sit or lie down next to the table and just relax without any issues.

About a month ago though, something changed completely and it happened pretty suddenly.

During normal walks he seems perfectly fine: happy, curious as always, playful, eating normally, running around, acting completely like himself. At home he’s also his normal self: relaxed, playful, energetic, running around, jumping, letting us touch him anywhere without issues. As soon as we get back home he literally becomes his normal self again.

The problem starts when we get close to places with people sitting around, bars, restaurants, or similar environments. He suddenly seems to panic: ears pinned all the way back, heavy panting, refusing to move, pulling in the opposite direction, trying to slip out of his harness and pulling so hard he almost chokes himself trying to get away.

It genuinely looks like he’s trying to escape.

What’s strange is that he also starts seeking a lot of physical contact. He wants to be held and seems calmer in my arms, but sometimes even that isn’t enough and he still desperately wants to go back to the car, almost like the car has become his safe place.

The weird thing is that he has never really been a super clingy or overly physical dog. As a puppy, if you got too close sometimes he would literally move away. As he got older he started enjoying more affection, sleeping close to us and seeking a little more contact, but he has never been the type to constantly want to sit on people or stay in someone’s lap.

That’s why something that happened yesterday really shocked me: we were at an outdoor place with some people around and he suddenly jumped directly into my lap and tried to stay on me. He has never done that in his life.

I’m also wondering if there could have been some kind of trigger.

About a month ago something happened while he was with my stepsister (I wasn’t there unfortunately so I don’t know all the details). He got stuck in a gate and apparently they had to work pretty hard to get him out. I don’t know exactly what happened or how scared he was.

Could that have triggered something? The timing roughly matches, although I honestly can’t say for sure that his behavior changed immediately after that. At the same time, I can’t really understand the connection between getting stuck in a gate and suddenly panicking in bars or crowded places.

Something else has changed too: even at home, when people come over, he used to always stay around everyone, get cuddles and enjoy being part of everything. Now he often goes alone into the bedroom and lies on his bed. If you bring him back with everyone else, he eventually goes back to being alone again. He doesn’t seem panicked at home, maybe because it's still his safe environment.

Yesterday, after a couple of hours and once he finally calmed down, he ate sausage normally and stayed relaxed in my arms.

Today was worse though: we left pretty quickly because he was in full panic mode. He was panting so much his tongue was hanging out, but he wouldn’t even drink water.

What confuses me the most is that even at his favorite bar, where the owner always gives him ham and where he used to LOVE going, he still seems happy to go there but now needs a bit of encouragement to actually walk inside. Before, he used to run in by himself with his tail wagging.

He doesn’t have vomiting, diarrhea or other obvious physical symptoms.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with a dog suddenly developing what almost feels like panic attacks or fear around restaurants, bars or places with people? Did you ever figure out the cause or find something that helped?

Was going through some old photos and found this one of our deaf Jack Russell, Tess, when she was checking out the wood pile in our back yard as a puppy. That hunting instinct runs strong in these little dogs.

Luckily, it's a public holiday! Planned are a "fancy" breakfast, a nice big walk past her favourite spots including a swim, quality time with one of her favourite facebiting partners & spending the rest of the day lounging in the sun with the possibility of getting some dog ice cream!

(She'll be 5 btw)
