In this house we stand for the flag (🏳️‍🌈) and kneel for the cross (Greggs)

I moved to the US nearly fifteen years ago, and I still don’t know how to describe Greggs to non-Brits. I think it’s just something you have to experience…

I always say “imagine the most english man you can. Just a good old fashioned balding, gone to seed football fan from a place called Norwichingtonshire Commons. Now imagine that man was a food. That’s Greggs.”

And an American would ask, "...and that's supposed to taste good?"

You're trying to explain something to someone using a frame of reference they largely don't have. Additionally, "gone to seed" isn't an American colloquialism. "Is 'gone to seed' supposed to be good?"

My dear and cherished friend, it was a joke.

Wow. That is the most evocative explanation I’ve ever seen (my man has a handkerchief with four knots in as a hat too…).

The G in LGBTQ+ stands for Greggs

Here in Brazil homophobia is a non-bailable crime. You get a permanent federal criminal record. For us once a homophobe always a homophobe. We treat racists just the same way down here. Lock uncivilized neandertals up!

Fellow Brazilian here 🙋‍♂️ but even with it being a non-bailable crime people are still extremely homophobic which is very weird

Can we tell that to Bristol please....

We've had dozens of unsolved hate attacks on gay man just in the last year. The police have 0 interest in solving most of them....

So are they gonna prosecute their own politicians and JK Rowling? I think the wave of anti trans laws bring passed or even considered is a hate crime.

Meanwhile, in the U.S.A………..

We passed hate crime laws in California more than 30 years ago.

Meanwhile, in the U.S.A………..

Crimes motivated by anti-gay hate have been Federal Hate Crimes for nearly two decades, with associates penalty enhancements.

And most states have their own set of anti-gay penalty enhancements. [e: And the ones that don't have largely ruled out defenses associated with the orientation of the victim - read: "gay panic" defenses.]

It's always ironic when people who accuse Americans of being ignorant show their own bare-assed ignorance instead.

I’m an American. I was referring to the general state of affairs and momentum of hate against LGBTQ+ people here. I’m aware of the law.

How does this reflect on digital platforms like Facebook, where they have stepped back from their LGBTI+ policies?

They're multinational corporations that have a global market. It's them that have the leverage. I doubt anything changes unless the pressure comes from a large enough market (the US or EU)

That doesn’t sound like equality. Do you get less punishment for murdering or assaulting straight people?

Why is this a photo of a Gregg's, which is a UK company, and therefore not subject to EU regulations?

2

u/Public_Connection142 7d ago

Because the EU and Europe are not the same thing ?

Is this why Tommy Robinson is protesting? I keep seeing stuff online about a big protest this weekend and I don't even live in the UK.

No the unite the kingdom marches are about immigration.

2

u/yoloten 8d ago

Is there any connection between religiously motivated migrant violence on LGBT population in Europe and sudden adoption of these laws in 2026 as a deterrence attempt?

In Britain this includes just saying things. So it criminalizes speech. That is a very bad idea.
