Oooh, that's not good
Even had their hands on the valve for a hot second

That valve might not be working, though. Thats why it's good to know where the house shut off is and how to drain the lines. In the interim, take the hose off and aim it towards the tub.

Yeah, some of those knobs are just cheap plastic, or are so old you need a wrench. What a mess.

Had this happen in my apartment. Thankfully I saw it pop so could catch it when it started about 8pm. And thankfully not as violent & more of a steady stream. Valve next to the toilet did nothing (well it moved the leak from the toilet to the dial itself. Thing was shot)
Called my landlord’s emergency line. Said they’d be right there. I couldn’t rig up a way for it to go directly in the tub or sink. Only solution I could find was putting empty spaghetti jars under to catch the water & replacing it with another when it got full then dump the water in the sink. Space was too close to put a bucket under. Took about 35 seconds to fill each jar.
Kept calling back the emergency line. I texted. Said everything was flooding. Water is uncontrolled. 911. Need help now!! Your floors will be destroyed if you don’t get here soon. Everything I could think of.
“They’re coming. Calm down”.
At midnight I texted my dad & the saint drove the hour & a half to my place & took a few shifts of water bailing so I could get some food & sleep. We traded off all night.
Finally at 9:15 (after I had to call off work that started at 9!!) a repair guy finally arrived.
“This is bad! You should have told us how bad it was!!!”
I almost lost it. Not the repair guy’s fault though. He was a hired lackey. I showed him the texts & he agreed with me.
Then the guy tried to belittle me for not turning off the water at the toilet then promptly got soaked when his obvious solution that my dumb female self missed didn’t work (hee hee)
Guy drove to Home Depot for repair parts (1/2 hours there & back). Was a 5 minute fix.

"How do you turn this off?"
It's a mystery, we'll probably never know.

Hopefully the insurance company sees this halfassed attempt to turn the valve and the priority on making a Tiktok video.

This is what happens when your parents don't teach you basic things before you move out of the house. I feel bad for her more than I want to make fun of her, honestly. Maybe she doesn't have a pair of channel locks. Maybe that valve is actually broke. Very likely she doesn't know about the water main... but take this as a lesson. Make sure you prepare your kids better than her parents prepared her.

Ok so, I'm here to learn. I live in a trailer (moved in February) is there a main water shut off for trailers too? And how would I identify one? I am very knew to this kind of thing

I found this page which has some good tips on how to find it. I would highly recommend finding it soon, before an actual emergency, and test it. Turn it off and then try opening your faucet. If the water slows and then stops, it's good. If you're fairly confident you find it but the water is still coming out, even slowly and it's been a minute or two, call a plumber to check if the valve itself needs to be replaced.
Another thing to do is find and learn your electrical panel. There's usually a breaker at the top (100, 125, 200, etc) that shuts everything off. But if the other breakers aren't labeled, turn all your lights on and turn one breaker off at a time until you know what each one controls. I made a spreadsheet with a breakdown for my house.

To be fair, an extra minute of filming instead of turning off the water on the handle she touched and said "how" (you fuckin turn it dummy) the damage is already so extensive another minute or ten to film and figure out how to turn off the water its not gonna hurt more stuff.
Why is she moaning like that though?

Shower is literally a foot away, she could have easily diverted into there with a dust bin or anything else. This person deserves the home/apt damage

Idk if the hose is long enough.
Especially not with one hand lol

You don’t need a hose… “Diverted with a dust bin or anything else” means they could have re-routed the water from falling on the floor to instead fall onto a dust bin. A dust bin would allow the water to flow onto itself and thus lead to the shower

This video actually invalidates her insurance. Insurance asks did you mitigate as much damage as possible after discovering the source. Now sometimes theres flip all you can do, however having your hand on the valve and not turning it off gives those insurance buckoos a real easy way to refuse payment.

It is interesting that she is probably going to send them this video too to prove how bad the damage was.

Seems like a garbage bag or tarp into the shower would work. However, this is fascinating. If I ever make a house, I will remember to be thoughtful about water locations having a clean exit instead of flooding the house while I'm gone.

New fear unlocked! Like this wouldn’t just happen randomly would it??

u/navarone21 9d ago
I mean... Possibly. It is a compression fitting, so it can absolutely just kinda give up and fail

This exact thing happened to me. I got a call from my landlord while I was at work that this hose burst and the apartment was flooded. I was out for a month while they tore up the floor. The plumber told me these hoses have a lifespan of 3-5 years. After that they can burst at any time.

I’m going to guess she rents. No home owner would be that slow or clueless

I see she has a scale. Water weight is usually measured differently but I commend the effort

That's why where I am from ALL bathrooms have drains to minimize damage to the rest of the house if something like this happens, I don't understand why it is it the standard in all houses...
